- This is the Rutgers Google Apps for Education suite. Called ScarletApps, it includes the most popular Google Apps - Gmail, Docs, Calendar, etc. as well as the recent addition of many of the applications formerly available only with personal Google accounts. New students should register for this service. It should make sharing for presentations and other group projects a bit easier. There may be lots of confusion regarding which email account to use: ScarletApps, personal Google, Eden. This website answers the general question: http://rucs-nbp.rutgers.edu/services/communicating/email-overview.php. Rutgers is recommended, but if you use personal, update the directory so that professors and University staff can find you. Computing @ SCILS

Also, top secret intel: the printer on the 3 rd floor grad student lab, mentioned on previous slide, does not currently subtract from your print allocation.

This can be accomplished by asking them to look at the PCs in front of them, and to trace the blue ethernet cord from the computer to the networking hub. In their homes, the networking hub would be replaced by their wireless router or cable modem. Filezilla is NOT installed on the computers in the grad lab on the 3 rd floor of SC&I. Not sure about the grad lab on the 3 rd floor of Alex. You’ll want to mention the importance of this concept for the 550 class. The Eden server is where each student’s website will be hosted. So they will need to learn how to transfer files from a local machine to the Eden server. To illustrate the concept, show them http://eden.rutgers.edu/~davisd or your own Eden website.

Only need to go into detail on Filezilla if there are Mac users present (and only if they brought their machines). - The file structure is the layout of folders in a particular directory. Keep these in sync when copying files from one machine to the other. When saving your work, use a flash drive to copy the higher-level directory. In the example above, it would be C:\\Users\\davisd\\Documents\\ex1. Doublecheck that each sub-directory is copied (“css” and “images”). Computing @ SCILS

You’ll get results that other people have decided were relevant to your search terms! You can add notes to your bookmarks to help you remember why you liked them (e.g., good bio; good quote on p. 23). You can make your bookmarks private or share them with others. Calls and IM: For Skype: in terms of hardware, encourage students to get a headset with mic since this will be very useful in online classes and/or if they want to interact with instructor or other students using audio / video conferencing. Meebo is used by RUL for chat reference. The Libraries presenter will go into more detail.
