2. 'Beauty lies in the
eyes of the
beholder'
What do you think
this saying means?
3. Dictionary Definition of beauty
Beauty:
The quality of
being pleasing, especially to look at, or someone
or something that
gives great pleasure, especially when you look at
it.
- Cambridge Dictionary
4. Physical things that we find
beautiful...
• People
• Art
• Music
• Nature
• Literature
• Food
As humans, we have the tendency to construct our idea of beauty
based on the things that we see or that are accessible to us in the
physical world.
5. Biblical definition of beauty
Beauty:
The Bible shows beauty to be intrinsic, shown through
the condition of our hearts.
Examples:
Acts 13:22 NIV
Matthew 26:10 NIV
6. How do we see the beauty in
God?
When we think about how we see and acknowledge God as most
beautiful, we don't think about Him in the physical sense but
rather we think about His attributes:
• Unconditional love
• Mercy
• Compassion
• Grace
• Faithfulness
7. Genesis 1:27 NKJV
'So God created man in His own image; in the image of
God He created him; male and female He created them.'
• If we see God as beautiful, the way He sees us is even
greater than we how see Him
8. Why do we struggle to see the
beauty within us?
• Comparison
• Past hurt from people's actions and words
• Lack of self-love
• Focusing on the negative
• A misdirected view of beauty
All of these things can stem from a lack of a true understanding
or experience of God's love as well as from not placing God's
love first
9. Revelations 2:4 NIV
Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.
1 Corinthians 13:3 ESV
If I give away all I have, and I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain
nothing.
There are so many things that we can do to try and make ourselves seem more worthy in
God's eyes but ultimately, if God's love is not the priority, we cannot come to the
understanding that our works alone are not what God truly deems to be beautiful.
10. 'Love is
blind'
• God is in one pod and we are in another pod
• We cannot see Him physically but the love He has for us and our
love for Him grows with each conversation that we have
• We fall in love with His spirit and His attributes
• Humans often define beauty on what we see but in a relationship
with God, there needs to be an ability to see the beauty beyond the
physical
11. 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height,
for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at.
People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV
3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate
hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should
be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which is of great worth in God’s sight.
12. What do
you see?
• We see ourselves as the rock, full of shame and guilt but God
just sees the inner parts of the rock – the pure form of gold
• The gold symbolises glory, kingship, divinity and truth
• We don't see the beauty in the rock until we see the gold specks
and start to see its potential to be the finished product
• Psalms 139:15 NIV
13. Psalms 139:14 NIV
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
• We say this verse and we associate it with our outward beauty but we need to associate
this verse with our inward beauty instead, which is in our hearts.
• I am = My heart
Song of Songs 4:7 NIV
You are altogether beautiful, my darling;
there is no flaw in you.
14. Romans 8:1-2 NIV
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ
Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you
free from the law of sin and death.
• Ultimately, in order to see the beauty that God
sees in you, you need to be able to accept God's
forgiveness
15. Accept God's
forgiveness
See yourself the
way God sees
you
Love yourself the
way that you
should be loved
Walk in His
freedom – live
the life ordained
for you
