3. History of Hyde Park
◦ A lawyer, Paul Cornell, from New York, began to develop the community of
Hyde Park in 1853.
◦ Hyde Park quickly became a popular suburb for Chicagoans as it was
conveniently located near the Illinois Central Railroad. Hyde Park also had its
perks: it’s right on the lakefront and it was an escape from the city.
◦ Chicago annexed Hyde Park in 1889.
◦ In 1891, the University of Chicago was founded, now considered one of the
world’s most respected universities.
◦ In 1948, Hyde Park started to become more racially diverse.
4. How Do I Get to Hyde Park?
◦ In order to get to Hyde Park from Loyola, using public transportation, you
would have to get on the red line at Granville and get off in approximately 45
minutes at Garfield.
◦ You would then catch a bus at the Garfield red line station. Bus #55, heading
toward the Museum of Science and Industry, should bring you to 55th Street
and Blackstone. This is where you will get off.
◦ If you turn right on Blackstone,
you should be in Hyde Park.
◦ There are many ways to get to Hyde Park

go to!

9. Our Adventure
◦ We traveled to Hyde Park on
September 30, 2015. We left Loyola
at a little after 4:00 PM.
◦ It took a little under an hour
to get to Hyde Park. Rachel drove,
taking Lake Shore Drive.

“I really liked our trip to Hyde Park. I was nervous at first because I
don’t know the area very well, but I warmed up pretty quickly.
Around the University of Chicago, it is just beautiful; it doesn’t look
‘city’ at all. I was lucky to get to see what we did. I can now say
that I’ve ‘been’ to Hyde Park and that I’ve seen the University of
Chicago in person. Even though I live here, I think this was an
authentic Chicago experience. We got to explore and go on an
adventure that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise gone on. I
really enjoyed it.”

members, too. It was nice to see what the
environment looked like around University of
Chicago. My favorite part was the painting wall
that we found nearby the restaurant we went to. I
felt like the person who painted that was very
talented and creative.”

“My experience going to Hyde Park was awesome. I was
wary of going because I felt that I could do better things
with my time. However, after having a fun time with new
friends, I really enjoyed my time. The sights we saw
showed me a new side to the city of Chicago. I learned
about University of Chicago, architecture, and selfie
sticks. 10/10 would recommend.”

“My experience with going to Hyde Park was really great. I
actually really enjoyed going with my group, and I got to know
everyone a lot better which was really fun. We went to UIC, the
Frederick C. Robie House, and a café. We had some experiences
with a selfie stick and made some really fun memories. The
experience really showed me another side of Chicago that I
would have never gone to unless I would have been given an
assignment like this one. Overall, I would recommend this
neighborhood to people who are trying to branch out into other
parts of Chicago.”
