3. Introduction
Bangladesh has a primarily agrarian economy. Agriculture is the
single largest producing sector of the economy since it comprises
about 30% of the country’s GDP and employs around 60% of the
total labor force. The performance of this sector has an
overwhelming impact on major macroeconomic objectives like
employment generation, poverty alleviation, human resources
development and food security.
4. Statement of Problems
Agricultural technologies have a significant impact on long-run economic growth. The
results indicate that agricultural modernization has a positive effect on both measures of
economic growth and human development. Crop agriculture in Bangladesh is constrained
every year by challenges, such as-
a) Loss of Arabia Land.
b) Population Growth.
c) Climate Changes.
d) Inadequate credit support to farmers.
e) Unfair Price of Produces.
f) Insufficient Investment in Research.
g) Inefficient Water Use.
5. Analysis and Findings
The loss is alarming and needs to be addressed immediately. The land use
policy of the government should be updated and implemented immediately
to stop further loss of arable land.
The twin problem of arable land loss and population growth needs to be
addressed simultaneously to ensure sustainable crop production.
Varieties/technologies tolerant to these natural hazards need to be
developed. Renewable energy, reduction in the use of fossil fuels, and
afforestation are recommended to mitigate the adverse effects of climate
change.
6. Analysis and Findings Cntd.
Farmers do not have Farmers’Associations or cooperatives to bargain for
fair price of their produces.
Government might encourage establishment of farmers’ cooperatives to
ensure fair price of their produces.
Conservation of rain water during monsoon is virtually non-existent that
could be utilized for irrigating crops during dry season.
7. Background
For many developing countries ensuring food security remains a
key development challenge. There are multiple aspects that
constitute food security, from food production to access to
markets and the resilience of food systems to external risks.
Different sectors play a role, with, of course, agriculture being the
most important.
8. Objectives
In this articles the overall objectives would be sustainable intensify and diversify agricultural
production to meet the nutritional needs of the increasing population in the country. The strategic
goals in this regard would be to:
Intensify production as needed to address the caloric requirements of an increasing population,
diversify production as needed to ensure balanced nutrition for all and maximize rural incomes.
Promote sustainability of natural resources use for sustainable agricultural growth.
Promote adaptation to climate change of agro-food systems to enhance resilience of agriculture
based livelihood systems.
9. Objectives Cntd.
Encourage export of agricultural commodities - particularly vegetables, fruits and the
fisheries sector - keeping in view domestic production and need
Promote commercialization of agriculture and ensure market price of produce for
sustainable and profitable agriculture
Create opportunities for agricultural product processing by establishing agro-based
industries and ensure easy marketing and fair price of agricultural commodities by
strengthening agricultural market management system and creating/improving transport,
storage and processing facilities
Promote effective use of ICT in agriculture.
10. Hypothesis
Project: Strengthening Agricultural Market Information Systems (AMIS)
globally and in Bangladesh using innovative methods and digital
methodology.
Objective: To support the globally accessible and transparent AMIS platform
and build the capacity of Bangladesh and other countries to produce,
disseminate and analyze quality agriculture market statistics using digital
technologies.
11. Hypothesis Cntd.
Activities:
1. Assessment of crop production estimation
2. Strengthening the system of periodic crop monitoring and crop forecasting
3. Generating estimates of stocks of Food grains
Outcome: Technical assistance provided on storage technologies for reduction
of post-harvest loss and preservation of micronutrients.
13. Conclusion
Agriculture is the determining factor for food security as well as
pro-poor development of Bangladesh economy. The Problems of
agriculture are multifaceted. So the ways of addressing the
challenges should be comprehensive, global and participatory for
sustainable agricultural development.
