How does this compete with RAC One Node, How is RAC becoming moot has hardware capacity increases?OPTIONAL PRODUCT DETAILSo let’s take a minute to talk about AlwaysOn at a deeper level. We’ll cover two key things:What are Availability Groups. And how AlwaysOn enables greater uptime. AlwaysOnAvailability Groups maximizes the availability of a set of user databases for an enterprise. Before customers had to configure each tool one at a time, one database at a time; mirroring, failover clustering, etc. Now with AlwaysOn, customers can configure their mirroring and failover needs for a group of databases through the click-thru wizard. Deploying AlwaysOn Availability Groups can include creating and configuring one or more availability groups that make up a customer’s global HA solution. The AG Listener connects directly to the app through a single point, virtual network name. With previous SQL Server versions, the apps had to either manually change connection string when a database mirroring failover happened, or they had to code two server name in the connection string (principal server and mirror server). As you can imagine, that was cumbersome, error-proneEach availability group is a container for a discrete set of user databases, known as availability databases, that fail over together. An availability group can have multiple possible failover targets (secondary replicas). Moreover, you can configure secondary replicas to support read-only access to secondary databases and for performing backups on secondary databases. Think of Availability Groups as a premium enterprise-grade alternative to Database Mirroring which has shipped with SQL Server since 2005. So, how does AlwaysOn enable greater uptime? The addition of multiple secondaries and product investments for faster connectivity and automatic page repair enable faster failover during planned and unplanned downtimeThe addition of multi-site clustering across the subnet helps enable cross-datacenter failover of SQL Server instances. This is incredibly important when both local centers are affected by, say, a natural disaster, the system can quickly failover to a datacenter across the globe.
As the data explosion continues, enabling blazing-fast performance across transaction processing and analysis & data warehousing queries is simply expected. Customers need systems that can keep up with increasing data volumes, the increasing complex nature of data, and handle the velocity at which data is coming in. You know how you feel when you have to wait for a website as it hangs for a second to process your request – even 2 seconds feels like an eternity. SQL Server has already enabled astonishing performance for customers, globally and across critical industries like financial institutions on the 2008 platform – SQL Server 2012 only gets better. SQL Server 2012 delivers a variety of performance improvements including a new ColumnStore Index directly in the relational engine. Many folks said it couldn’t be done, to deliver a columnar store directly in the engine, and we delivered. Customers are seeing up to 10x performance gains on their Data Warehousing queries.
Credible, consistent dataDeliver credible, consistent data to the right users with end -to-end data integration, cleansing and data management. One Single Semantic ModelBI Semantic Model: A single, scalable model for Business Intelligence applications, from reporting and analysis to dashboards and scorecards, that helps provide a consistent view across heterogeneous data sources. IT and developers can create a single model to be consumed by front-end tools for their BI Applications across both tabular and multidimensional models. Seamlessly Integrate DataIntegration Services: Reduce time-to-solution for innovative, team-based data integration across data sources, including the cloud, by utilizing the industry-leading tools in Integration Services (SSIS) that help deliver credible, consistent data reliably and efficiently. New improvements include significant improvements in the user experience for dramatic efficiencies. Cleanse Organizational DataData Quality Services: Improve data quality by using organizational knowledge and 3rd party reference data providers, including cloud-based providers, by enabling data managers to reliably profile, cleanse, and match data —run as a standalone tool or leverage within SSIS.Efficiently Manage DataMaster Data Services: Create, maintain, store, and access master data structures used for object mapping, reference data, metadata management with Master Data Services (MDS), while a new MDS Add-in for Excel makes it easy for end users to manage and maintain central data.
So let’s talk about security. As end users continue to demand access to data and corporate and industry compliance policies tighten, the topic of security becomes paramount. The security of your environment is only as good as the product you’re using, and amongst the major database players we have the best track record. SQL Server consistently reports the lowest database vulnerabilities among the major RDBMs vendors. This means less inherent security vulnerabilities, less patching and less downtime – all factors that affect Mission Critical Confidence. It looks too good to be true, right? If anyone experienced “SLAMMER” with Microsoft over 10 years ago, you know how painful a security risk can be – it took down the internet. In response, Microsoft started a journey to fundamentally embrace a security culture around Secure by design, depth of security and depth of defense, to reduce the overall surface area to minimize risk. All SQL Server engineers take required security trainings year over year. As a result, SQL Server is now the most secure database available. With SQL server 2012, we continue to expand on this solid foundation with tools and enhancements to help customers more easily control access to data and perform audits.
This table provides more detailed look at the SQL Server 2012 Editions and related capabilities. As you can see, for Standard Edition, there is a 16 core maximum. For Business Intelligence Edition, there is a 20 core maximum for database use and up to the OS Max for BI. Enterprise Edition can be used up the maximum number of cores in the operating system. Both BI Edition and Enterprise Edition offer the full premium BI capabilities of SQL Server 2012, including Enterprise Data Management, Self-Server BI, and Corporate BI features. Enterprise Edition adds mission critical and Tier 1 database functionality with the maximum scalability, performance and high availability. With Enterprise Edition under Software Assurance, customers also get unlimited virtualization, with the ability to license unlimited virtual machines.
SQL Server 2012 delivers hundreds of valuable features, here are some of the most exciting ones.
