Real-Time Video via WiFi and the 4G LTE Network
INTRODUCTION
The Transporptation and Telematics
Industries are undergoing a significant
transformation. For trucking companies,
Telematics only tells one piece of the
story. So much happens outside of alerts,
and with only engine diagnostics and
delayed reporting, companies lack the
relevant information they need to make
their fleets safer, efficient, and more
cost-effective.
Trucking Companies are
now relying on video to
improve productivity and
safety and to answer
questions about fleet
performance.
As a result, trucking companies are now
relying on video to improve productivity
and safety and to answer questions
about their fleet performance. Video can
aid in both preventing accidents and
offering definitive proof when a driver is
not at fault. It can also shed light on other
situations such as proof of delivery, idling
time, cargo security, and job-site efficiency.
Depending on the vendor solution, video
is either streamed live to any mobile
device via the 4G LTE network, or down-
loaded using WiFi when the truck returns
to the yard.
This white paper discusses how video
and cloud technologies are positively
impacting the trucking industry and
analyzes the pros and cons of WiFi and
4G LTE--the delivery methods used to
stream or download the video so that
fleet managers can access it.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
The Cloud
Cloud computing, also called on-demand
computing, is a highly-used service that
provides shared resources and data to
computers and other devices on
demand. All data and information is
stored in third-party data centers. The
Cloud is a very efficient and inexpensive
way to store, process, and access data
because it uses shared resources (like
the electricity grid) over a network.1
The Cloud offers a variety of advantages
to transportation companies such as:
• Avoiding upfront infrastructure costs.
• Getting their applications up and
running faster.
• Enabling them to update their applica-
tions to the latest versions, even when
their hardware is older.
Mobile devices can connect to the cloud
wirelessly using the main two wireless
methods: WiFi when in range of a
network, and the 4G LTE network at all
other times.
WiFi
WiFi is a technology that allows electron-
ic devices to connect to a wireless LAN
(WLAN) network, mainly using the 2.4
gigahertz (12 cm) UHF and 5 gigahertz
(6 cm) SHF ISM radio bands. A WLAN is
usually password protected, but may be
open, which allows any device within its
range to access the resources of the
WLAN network.2
The 4G LTE Network
LTE (Long-Term Evolution, commonly
known as 4G LTE) is a standard for
wireless communication of high-speed
data for mobile devices. LTE enabled
devices connect to the cloud when they
are not connected via WiFi.3

VIDEO AND THE CLOUD
What Video Means to the
Transportation Industry
Video technologies have numerous
benefits. They allow fleet managers to
see what is happening with their fleet,
dramatically increasing visibility and
transparency. Multiple cameras can be
placed around the truck, e.g. facing the
road, the driver, behind the truck, and on
the sides. In addition, video monitors in
the truck give the driver a better view of
the surroundings.
Video solutions in the industry vary.
Some trigger video only when an alert
occurs. Others record continuously,
whether or not an alert has been
triggered, so video is captured and
streamed all the time.
Video Downloads via WiFi
Certain video solutions record video to
the local onboard DVR where it is stored
until the vehicle can return to the yard
and connect to a WiFi network. Then the
the video is uploaded to either the Cloud
or to the company’s local servers using
their password protected WiFi network.
Video solutions in the
industry vary. Some
trigger video only when
an alert occurs. Others
record continuously,
whether or not an alert
has been triggered, so
video is captured and
streamed all the time.

Today, wireless network speeds have increased to
the point where video and other high bandwidth
applications can be streamed live either over WiFi
or the 4G LTE network with little or no latency. As
a result, companies and consumers alike are
watching live and recorded video on their mobile
devices, wherever they are, on a daily basis.

or desktop device.
Access to the live video feed is
available to managers at anytime,
anywhere. In addition, all this
recorded video is searchable
regardless of whether an alert
has been triggered, so man-
agers can go back and view
historic footage if they find
out about an event after the
fact. All video is searchable
up to three months in the
past, even if no event is
triggered.
If the truck is connected to a
WiFi network, then the video
will use the WiFi network
instead to stream live.
With cloud video,
managers have access to
both a live video feed and
historic video, with or
without alerts.

Live Video via the
4G LTE Network
With this solution, video from the truck is
streamed live via the 4G LTE Network
anytime the truck is in use (and if
programmed to do so) even when it isn’t
in use, i.e. 24/7. This video is then sent
to the Cloud via in real-time via the 4G
network and is transmitted to any mobile
People need the informa-
tion they want when they
want it, not just when they
are connected to WiFi. So
they almost always buy a
mobile device with WiFi
and 4G LTE capabilities.
How often do incidents happen when the truck is parked at the
yard, and empty? Almost never. It is when the trucks are on the
road, in traffic, at truck stops, at the job site, at the delivery site
etc. that situations typically occur.

WiFi Only Compared
to 4G LTE+WiFi
There are many advantages to streaming
live video over the G4 LTE network.
A good analogy is a smartphone. Very
few people if any, purchase a WiFi only
smartphone. Instead, they spend more to
buy one with WiFi and 4G LTE capabili-
ties because they want the high-availabil-
ity and convenience of an anywhere,
anytime data plan. It is extremely limiting
to only be able to access your phone,
email, video, and apps when in range of
a WiFi network. People need the informa-
tion they want when they want it, not just
when they are connected to WiFi.
They same concept applies to video.
WiFi alone means that fleet managers
only have access to their video data after
the fact, and only when an incident has
already occurred.
They have no way of knowing what is
going on with their fleet NOW. Live video
via 4G LTE to the cloud gives companies
both the ability to view what’s happening
in real-time and the ability to look up
what happened with their fleet in the past.
Why Live Video?
Without real-time video,
streamed live, managers
are blind to what’s really
going on until after the
fact, or perhaps at all.

See What You're Missing
How often do incidents happen when the
truck is parked at the yard, and empty?
Not many. It is when the trucks are on the
road, in traffic, at truck stops, at the job
site, at the delivery site etc. that situations
typically occur. Without real-time video,
streamed live, managers are blind to
what’s really going on until after the fact,
or perhaps at all.
A Worst Case Scenario
Video stored locally on the DVR until the
truck returns to the yard also puts the
company at risk of losing their video and
data completely.
For example: recently, in California, there
was a catastrophic incident when the
truck flipped on the freeway and went up
in flames. Everything, including the DVR
video of the incident, burned up com-
pletely before firefighters were able to
extinguish the fire. As a result, all video
and Telematics about the event was lost
forever.
With cloud-based solutions, alert and
non-alert based incidents are captured
and delivered in real-time and therefore
accessible immediately and anytime,
regardless of the incident and regardless
of the vehicle's location.
Seeing the Whole Picture
Highly available, live, and historic
video-stored in the cloud--can now give
trucking companies the tools they need
to solve whatever fleet issues they are
experiencing.
Alerts are sent directly to managers and
their teams immediately, via iPhone
Alerts, email, and text using the cellular
network. Without this on-demand video,
managers may be waiting for hours or
days to receive this information.

See What You're Missing
Depending on the situation, the fleet
manager can look into an incident before
and/or as it is occurring, as well as ana-
lyze issues that may have occurred prior.
Analyzing and Addressing
Issues
Live and historic video in hand, fleet
managers now have the tools they need
to make informed decisions about their
fleets. With this information companies
can do two very important things:
1. Potentially prevent incidents from
occurring. Using live video and an ongo-
ing video review service, companies have
the opportunity to identify, for example,
distracted driving, or overly tired drivers.
In this scenarios, the fleet manager can
act quickly, pulling the driver off the road
until the person is rested.
2. See the Whole Picture of Past Events:
If an incident does occur, (any incident...
accidents, theft, proof of delivery, driver
behavior etc.) video provides a complete
view of the event. After the fact, the
company can analyze the situation and
address it as they see fit, e.g. exonerat-
ing the driver or settling the claim quickly
if their driver is a fault.
For example, in another recent accident
between a truck and a bicycle, two
eye-witnesses blamed the driver. Video
footage provided proof that that the
“witnesses” had their backs turned and
that the bicycle ran a red light. The driver
was completely exonerated and the
bicyclist charged.
Both the ability to see in real time and
after the fact are necessary to keep a
fleet running smoothly and in top condition.
Driver safety is only one of
many issues addressable with
video. Others include:
• Accident re-creation
• GPS tracking and exact vehicle location
• Driver behavior
• Proof of delivery
• Idle-time use
• Job-site safety and security

Open Platform Videos
Other advancements in video are driving
this industry forward including an open
platform and partnerships between ven-
dors. These innovations open up the
possibility of complete transparency of
driver and truck behavior across vehicles
and fleets.
Although any video is better than no
video at all, only live video utilizing the
Cloud and the G4 LTE network, can give
managers the complete view they need.
And with an open Video Platform, new
solutions and integrations are arriving at
a fast and furious pace, enabling com-
plete transparency of information.
Convoy is very pleased to be at the core
of this overall solution--one that will
provide continuous benefits to all types of
trucks, truck drivers, and their companies.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION The Transporptation and Telematics Industries are undergoing a significant transformation. For trucking companies, Telematics only tells one piece of the story. So much happens outside of alerts, and with only engine diagnostics and delayed reporting, companies lack the relevant information they need to make their fleets safer, efficient, and more cost-effective. Trucking Companies are now relying on video to improve productivity and safety and to answer questions about fleet performance. As a result, trucking companies are now relying on video to improve productivity and safety and to answer questions about their fleet performance. Video can aid in both preventing accidents and offering definitive proof when a driver is not at fault. It can also shed light on other situations such as proof of delivery, idling time, cargo security, and job-site efficiency. Depending on the vendor solution, video is either streamed live to any mobile device via the 4G LTE network, or down- loaded using WiFi when the truck returns to the yard. This white paper discusses how video and cloud technologies are positively impacting the trucking industry and analyzes the pros and cons of WiFi and 4G LTE--the delivery methods used to stream or download the video so that fleet managers can access it. • 3. TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW The Cloud Cloud computing, also called on-demand computing, is a highly-used service that provides shared resources and data to computers and other devices on demand. All data and information is stored in third-party data centers. The Cloud is a very efficient and inexpensive way to store, process, and access data because it uses shared resources (like the electricity grid) over a network.1 The Cloud offers a variety of advantages to transportation companies such as: • Avoiding upfront infrastructure costs. • Getting their applications up and running faster. • Enabling them to update their applica- tions to the latest versions, even when their hardware is older. Mobile devices can connect to the cloud wirelessly using the main two wireless methods: WiFi when in range of a network, and the 4G LTE network at all other times. WiFi WiFi is a technology that allows electron- ic devices to connect to a wireless LAN (WLAN) network, mainly using the 2.4 gigahertz (12 cm) UHF and 5 gigahertz (6 cm) SHF ISM radio bands. A WLAN is usually password protected, but may be open, which allows any device within its range to access the resources of the WLAN network.2 The 4G LTE Network LTE (Long-Term Evolution, commonly known as 4G LTE) is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile devices. LTE enabled devices connect to the cloud when they are not connected via WiFi.3 CONVOY TECHNOLOGIES, LLC. Newport Beach, CA. www.convoytechnologies.com 1.888.565.2583 CONTACT US FOR SOLUTIONS! • 4. VIDEO AND THE CLOUD What Video Means to the Transportation Industry Video technologies have numerous benefits. They allow fleet managers to see what is happening with their fleet, dramatically increasing visibility and transparency. Multiple cameras can be placed around the truck, e.g. facing the road, the driver, behind the truck, and on the sides. In addition, video monitors in the truck give the driver a better view of the surroundings. Video solutions in the industry vary. Some trigger video only when an alert occurs. Others record continuously, whether or not an alert has been triggered, so video is captured and streamed all the time. Video Downloads via WiFi Certain video solutions record video to the local onboard DVR where it is stored until the vehicle can return to the yard and connect to a WiFi network. Then the the video is uploaded to either the Cloud or to the company’s local servers using their password protected WiFi network. Video solutions in the industry vary. As a result, companies and consumers alike are watching live and recorded video on their mobile devices, wherever they are, on a daily basis. Video Solutions for Trucking Companies

In addition, all this recorded video is searchable regardless of whether an alert has been triggered, so man- agers can go back and view historic footage if they find out about an event after the fact. All video is searchable up to three months in the past, even if no event is triggered. If the truck is connected to a WiFi network, then the video will use the WiFi network instead to stream live. With cloud video, managers have access to both a live video feed and historic video, with or without alerts. CONVOY TECHNOLOGIES, LLC. • 6. People need the informa- tion they want when they want it, not just when they are connected to WiFi. So they almost always buy a mobile device with WiFi and 4G LTE capabilities. How often do incidents happen when the truck is parked at the yard, and empty? Almost never. It is when the trucks are on the road, in traffic, at truck stops, at the job site, at the delivery site etc. that situations typically occur. CONVOY TECHNOLOGIES, LLC. DRIVEN BY INNOVATION The Latest in Open Platform Software TechnologyV I D E O M A T I C S TM See What You're Missing WiFi Only Compared to 4G LTE+WiFi There are many advantages to streaming live video over the G4 LTE network. A good analogy is a smartphone. Very few people if any, purchase a WiFi only smartphone. Instead, they spend more to buy one with WiFi and 4G LTE capabili- ties because they want the high-availabil- ity and convenience of an anywhere, anytime data plan. It is extremely limiting to only be able to access your phone, email, video, and apps when in range of a WiFi network. People need the informa- tion they want when they want it, not just when they are connected to WiFi. They same concept applies to video. WiFi alone means that fleet managers only have access to their video data after the fact, and only when an incident has already occurred. They have no way of knowing what is going on with their fleet NOW. Live video via 4G LTE to the cloud gives companies both the ability to view what’s happening in real-time and the ability to look up what happened with their fleet in the past. Why Live Video?
  • 7. Without real-time video, streamed live, managers are blind to what’s really going on until after the fact, or perhaps at all. CONVOY TECHNOLOGIES, LLC. Without real-time video, streamed live, managers are blind to what’s really going on until after the fact, or perhaps at all. A Worst Case Scenario Video stored locally on the DVR until the truck returns to the yard also puts the company at risk of losing their video and data completely. For example: recently, in California, there was a catastrophic incident when the truck flipped on the freeway and went up in flames. Everything, including the DVR video of the incident, burned up com- pletely before firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. As a result, all video and Telematics about the event was lost forever. With cloud-based solutions, alert and non-alert based incidents are captured and delivered in real-time and therefore accessible immediately and anytime, regardless of the incident and regardless of the vehicle's location. Seeing the Whole Picture Highly available, live, and historic video-stored in the cloud--can now give trucking companies the tools they need to solve whatever fleet issues they are experiencing. Alerts are sent directly to managers and their teams immediately, via iPhone Alerts, email, and text using the cellular network. Without this on-demand video, managers may be waiting for hours or days to receive this information.

DRIVEN BY INNOVATION The Latest in Open Platform Software TechnologyV I D E O M A T I C S TM See What You're Missing Depending on the situation, the fleet manager can look into an incident before and/or as it is occurring, as well as ana- lyze issues that may have occurred prior. Analyzing and Addressing Issues Live and historic video in hand, fleet managers now have the tools they need to make informed decisions about their fleets. With this information companies can do two very important things: 1. Potentially prevent incidents from occurring. Using live video and an ongo- ing video review service, companies have the opportunity to identify, for example, distracted driving, or overly tired drivers. In this scenarios, the fleet manager can act quickly, pulling the driver off the road until the person is rested. 2. See the Whole Picture of Past Events: If an incident does occur, (any incident... accidents, theft, proof of delivery, driver behavior etc.) video provides a complete view of the event. After the fact, the company can analyze the situation and address it as they see fit, e.g. exonerat- ing the driver or settling the claim quickly if their driver is a fault. For example, in another recent accident between a truck and a bicycle, two eye-witnesses blamed the driver. Video footage provided proof that that the “witnesses” had their backs turned and that the bicycle ran a red light. The driver was completely exonerated and the bicyclist charged. Both the ability to see in real time and after the fact are necessary to keep a fleet running smoothly and in top condition. Driver safety is only one of many issues addressable with video. Others include: • Accident re-creation • GPS tracking and exact vehicle location • Driver behavior • Proof of delivery • Idle-time use • Job-site safety and security
