Adult Stem Cells
Adult stem cells can be termed as undifferentiated cells found in isolated body parts or tissues. They
possess the unique property of replenishing and undergoing self-division among themselves to produce

4. PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH
The stem cells change to form various amazing arrangements of specific cells that constitute a human
being. Stem cells of the human embryos are pluripotent (the cells give rise to various types of cells except
the placental cells).
Stem cells of the adult human are multipotent i.e., they develop into different types of cells. Pluripotency in
adult human stem cells is not found.
Human embryonic stem cells are the cells taken from a few days’ old embryo or stem cells taken from fetal
tissue of more than eight weeks old.
Adult embryonic stem cells are taken from adults. Aberrations in the arrangement or transformation of
stem cells into specific cells results in severe birth defects or cancer.

medical conditions by rectifying the anomalies. Hence, the study of stem cells proves to be useful in

Application of stem cell to replace the blood cells is effective in treatment of such cases. The use of stem
cells has shown positive results in treatment of cases of blood cancers (leukemia), lymphoma and multiple
myeloma, wherein the bone marrow gets destroyed due to radiation therapies. The latest variety of cancer
that is being treated by using the stem cell transplantation is breast cancer.
The latest entrant in the stem cell treatment therapy variety is the Mesenchymal stem cell. This cell has the
unique ability of molding itself into the form of bone, cartilage, fat or any form of muscle.
Further it can alter the immune function in some cases. This treatment has derived utmost attention and
excitement in imparting treatment for muscoskeletal aberrations, cardiac disorders and irregularities
pertaining to the immune system.
The experiments to establish the veracity and practical applicability of these cells have rendered
encouraging results. But its advantage over other existing therapies is still not proved completely.
