Rice is an important staple food in sub-Saharan Africa, however 40% of rice consumed is imported due to low domestic paddy yields, poor soil fertility, and lack of access to good farming practices and inputs. RiceAdvice is a free Android app that provides personalized advice to rice farmers to improve yields and incomes through recommending varieties, crop calendars, fertilizer plans, and other good practices. Farmers using RiceAdvice have reported yield gains of 0.6 to 1.8 tons/hectare and income gains of $100 to $200/hectare.

RiceAdvice is a free app for AndroidTM
that helps to improve rice farmers’ yield and
income through providing personalized advice
on rice management practices
The following steps are required to get advice:
Step 1: Download RiceAdvice
from Google Play on smartphone or tablet
Step 2: Fill in farmers’ personal condition:
rice growing condition, typical pracitces,
expected sowing date, fertilizer availability
and market price
Step 3: Set yield targets
based on their available budget or
desired prodution level
Step 4: Get a personalized advice
including a crop calendar, fertilizer plan,
recommended rice variety and other
good agricultural practices
