This slide will show the audience the relationship between processing foods for a cheap product and the risks that occur with that processing. It has been shown that a poorer class of people tend to have higher nitrate levels because a lot of processed foods are filled with them. We all know by now that processed foods tend to be cheaper to purchase and who tend to go cheaper when it comes to purchasing foods?
Since inception nitrates being added to foods as a preservation method or just even being added to foods in general have caused talks about if they are harmful to humans in larger doses. Well on several different occasions it has been shown that elevated levels of nitrates from processed meats mainly have cause various forms of cancer to occur. As for instance in this photo it shows that if you feed your child twelve or more hot dogs per month they will have nine times the risk of developing leukemia, I don’t know about you but that is not a risk I want to take for my child.
In this excel chart it shows allowances of nitrates in water by our US government along side the levels of nitrates in water that can cause birth defects. While it is shown that only six milligrams of nitrates per liter of water can cause birth defects the governments standard is held above that level at ten milligrams. Yet nitrate levels in water all over the country tend to carry more then that forty five milligrams per liter to be exact. Why would our government let this happen? One theory can be brought to light that it would be extremely hard to remove nitrates from water once they have already reached these points so the government just keeps increasing the threshold of what is acceptable for human consumption. In this slide is a portion of a pdf document on elevated levels of nitrates in women and the elevated risks of cancers in those patients. This study shows that the higher amounts of nitrate intake increases the risk of developing these cancers. So should we do something to prevent this or should there just be gleaming warning labels on foods like we do to cigarettes? That sure could cause a notion for debate on these topics.
We have seen various attempts to get unneeded added nitrates in our foods to be stopped from ever happening yet it still is an issue due to the widespread use of the item. Back in the 1970’s legislation was submitted to get these added compounds out of our foods yet the bill wasn’t passed due to lack of research showing harm to humans from it. Well now we are in 2015 and have many of different studies from around the world showing that these added nitrates can cause harm when consuming large quantities of foods that they are added to. Nitrates in food have been linked to so many different ailments that it would be easier to name ailments that it is not linked to. It seems as though the world may just about had enough with nitrates being added to our food and water supplies.
By now we are all to familiar with cancer, chances are that everybody has been affected by cancer in some way. Whether it be someone in your family who has had it, someone you know had it, or you have a friend who is struggling to watch someone go through it; chances are high that we can all relate to one of these scenarios. There is a good chance that some of those people could of developed the disease from consuming large amounts of nitrates through processed meats. Why would we let these products continue to be put in our foods and water? We tried to put an end to this practice before we had all of the right data to back our claims now that we do what is to stop us from trying again?
When seeking for an end to this practice much will need to be done. The word must be spread of the harmful qualities of nitrates in our foods, while some people may have a general outlook that Nitrates are bad it is deemed as one of those things like fats in our food or calorie intake, that if we just don’t have to much of it we will be ok. Well Nitrates in our foods are not going to just have us gaining a few pounds they can cause very deadly Cancers and other harmful ailments. Doctors in the Nutrition field will need to continue to do more research to prove that Nitrates can be much more harmful then they can be useful in our foods. Showing the public of the horrific diseases Nitrates can contribute to developing in the human body, so that an outrage can be met on a larger scale, that is seeming the best way to get the governments attention. Finding other methods to substitute for nitrates then much less of a pushback from the corporations who use Nitrates in their food products could help changing the standard. Bringing these studies into the national spotlight would be bet for change to these practices from a political standpoint.
