Individual Practice, Rogelio Gomez Vargas
1. Individual Practice
What happened? (Background, brief description of events, specific leadership
actions) What were the results? (Real or potential. Try to include both positive
and negative possibilities. Even if the event seemed clearly good or bad,
consider unintended consequences.)
In mid-2018, I started working for the Domus Institute as a math teacher. Domus is a
new school in Torreon Coahuila that has only been in existence for 3 years but has
grown impressively. Because of that, job growth opportunities can be achieved with
dedication and effort in a short period. 6 months passed and I was promoted as a
mathematics area coordinator. In my new position to the surprise of many, I was the
youngest coordinator and was in charge of approximately 12 people.
Speaking with honesty, this generated a leadership problem because being less than
they did not consider me fit for the position. Because of this there was a
communication problem where they preferred to avoid having contact with me and
they made their own decisions. Mediating the matter, I found that several companies
succeeded by giving freedom to their employees and I began to apply these tactics
but, in the end, it was counterproductive because some of them began to be lazy. It is
important to mention that I tried new approaches, but they were not effective because
after 2 months I had to leave the school to start my studies in the master's degree
Why did this happen? (Consider all possible factors, including the people and
the situation)
The main factor I consider is age since it is understandable that it may be strange that
a minor comes to give you orders and want to decide how things should be done. I also
believe that it is a common feature in generation x and in baby boomers to maintain the
traditional system. Another factor of great importance is that the ascent occurred
overnight and was a surprise to everyone who gave it to me. Which may indicate that
someone would expect to be given to someone who has been working longer and
giving it to me created a situation of distaste.
What class concepts are relevant to this situation? (Mention at least one
concept from class and how they can be used to interpret the situation.)
I consider this situation in relation to the aspect of the different types of leaders there
are. First I consider that although it is very true that someone can be born with the
2. qualities of a leader, it is also true that someone can become a leader. I confess that I
failed in the short time I was in charge of coordination. I must improve my skills to
inspire my colleagues and make them trust me.
What did you learn from this? (Broader lessons that might apply to other
situations or problems.)
The most important thing that I take with me is that now I have a greater clarity in the
type of leader that I want to be like a better perspective of how to judge a person and
understand his behavior and be able to help him in the best way.
