This document provides guidelines for monitoring and maintaining water quality in shrimp ponds. It discusses signs that water exchange is needed, such as large bubbles rising to aerators or shrimp surfacing. Feed management is important to control ammonia and H2S levels. Transparency, color, and turbidity are used to assess water quality. Treatments like probiotics, sediment oxidizers, zeolite and lime can improve water quality by increasing plankton and stabilizing alkalinity and pH. Following these guidelines can help maintain good water quality without relying on lab reports.
3. Bubbles on water surface
If big bubbles are formed and moving towards aerators
without blast, then water should exchange
If small bubbles are formed and blast before reaching
aerators, then no need to exchange the water
Check tray Clogging
While pulling the check tray, if we observed the water
clogs and overweight of the check tray, then water
exchange should required
Shrimp surfacing
If shrimp comes to surface in the morning time at the
time of aerators off, then water exchange is required
4. Feed quality
We should select the good quality feed
Check Tray Monitoring
Within 1 – 1 ½ hr, feed should be complete in the check
tray, otherwise feed should be controlled, due to this
ammonia and H2S levels also controlled
If feed is given more, ammonia and H2S levels increased
5. Transparency
Transparency should not be more or less
We insert our hand inside the pond water upto the elbow, our
arm should be visible inside the water, it indicates the good
quality of water
Color
If pond water turns to black or coffee decoction , indicates bad
water quality.
Even foam with black color also indicates bad quality of pond
water
Black color of pond water indicates the organic loads increases.
Due to Diatoms also, water color turns to black, but in summer
season, most of the time Diano-flagellates & Ciliates, Suspended
Organic Matter, all these turns to black color of pond water
Turbidity
If the pond water turns to clay color, it indicates bad water
quality
6. Probiotics
Water Probiotics
Soil Probiotics
Water Probiotics
It can apply in Pond directly or through water also, then
quality of water is increased
Water Probiotics reduced
Soil Probiotics
Soil Probiotics can given to the pond directly or through
the water to increase the quality of water.
7. Sediment Oxidizer (AquaKem)
With the sediment oxidizer, water quality and Soil (Pond
Bottom) quality is increased
Zeolite
In low salinity conditions, Zeolite should be given to increase
the water quality
Agriculture Lime
It should be given in low alkalinity ponds (<120 ppm).
2 bags/1Acre of Ag lime should be given to stabilize the
Plankton, Alkalinity and pH levels of the pond
NOTE: By following the above said directions, we can
maintain the water quality parameters of shrimp
