Northern Rail has significantly reduced crime on its rail network with limited resources. Through innovation and partnerships, it introduced initiatives like DNA kits in 2004, established a rail response team in 2006, expanded CCTV coverage, and developed training programs. These efforts have helped cut notable crime 55% and non-notifiable crime 57% since 2004. Northern Rail's proactive deterrent strategies like station adoptions, a schools charter, and stay safe training have strengthened community engagement and led to assaults dropping to their lowest level in 2013, nearly half the 2009 rate. Despite operating on a shoestring budget, Northern Rail has achieved success through internal investments and external funding that allowed continued expansion of initiatives.
