Genre study
1.
2. โข The Genre โIndie Popโ is simply alternative rock music that originated from the UK
in the mid-1980.
โข It has roots from a lot of Scottish post-punk bands.
โข The Genre โIndie Popโ is different from the more well-known Genre of โIndie Rockโ
as the rockier version of the Genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and is angstfree.
โข The Genreโs initial popularity began in a small photocopied fanzines, and small
shop-based record labels.
The British musical weekly New Musical
Express released a compilation cassette called
โC81โ which was era-defining.
This cassette consisted of various groups, and it
reflects the different approaches of the postpunk era.
Five years later, NME released their follow-up
of the โC81โ with their โC86โ. This was then seen
as the birth of โIndieโ in the UK.

4. โIndie Popโ music videos are known to be created with a
low-budget. The main settings of these videos are normally
located in; studios, cities, parks, woods etc. These locations
are used more so than others as they are able to form
mysteries which allow the audience focus more on the
performance of the song.
5. โขThe majority of โIndie Popโ music videos include live performances
from the artist which cause the audience to focus on the talent which
the artist has. These make the artistsโ careers more about their true
passion for music, rather than the success that it follows.
โขLive performances also promote the artists as it allows audiences to
experience the atmosphere which is formed during one of the artists
concerts. This then urges these audiences to want to go and view
these certain artists live.
โขNormal performance is often joined with a narrative which divides
the music video. This therefore makes the music video more
memorable.
6. โข A narrative is used to tell a story by using a sequence of images and
videos related to the song. These are not literal but still enable the
audience to understand why the video has used that certain narrative
which links with song. This is using Goodwinโs Theory of Illustration
and Amplification.
โข Throughout the years, as technology has advanced, music video
directors are now able to create different variations of storytelling.
These are done by special effects which cause the video to be much
more interesting for the audience. These also keep them engaged in
the music video as the scenes are constantly changing. This can also
help gain success and status of the song, artist/s and directors.
7. โขIndie music videos are known for their simplicity. The props,
costumes, make up etc are all vital links to the scene.
โขProps can complete a scene as audiences are able to physically see
what the character/artist is currently doing. For example, in Ed
Sheeranโs A Team, we see the girl using drugs. We as an audience
assume this already, but our assumptions wouldnโt have been fulfilled
without the character actually showing us her struggles to feed the
addiction
โขCostume and make up are what make the character. It conveys their
age, wealth, status, era of the music video and stability. For example,
in Taylor Swiftโs Love Story, they are all dressed in Period clothing from
the 1900s
8. โข Dialogue is often used in music videos, at either the beginning or
near the end. It is usually used to tell or conclude the story of the
video. For example, in Taylor Swiftโs โI knew you were troubleโ, the
dialogue at the beginning, explains to her audience what she had
learnt from the relationship she was previously involved in. Dialogue
is also used to either distort, fade, increase or decrease the tempo to
express a characters emotions in the video.
โขDiegetic sound is used when filming scenes to a music video. It is used
to match the lyrics with the actions done in the video, but in the final
product, the song of the video is non-diegetic.
9. โขExtreme close-ups are the most common shots used in โIndie Popโ
videos as they introduce the artist or the antagonist to the audience.
They are also used to express a characters emotions.
โขLong shots and establishing shots are used to show the setting of the
video. They also form the character, and help the audience to
understand the main message behind the video.
โขTilts and pans are used to either carry out a certain scene or to cut
into another scene within the video.
โขHandheld shots are often used in these types of videos to show a
memory held by a character.
10. โขFilters are often used in โIndie Popโ videos. They are place on top of
certain clips or the entirety of the video to portray a certain idea to the
viewer. This could be anything, such as a memory or gives age to the
video to show the clip in a positive or negative light. For example, in
Ellie Gouldingโs โYour Songโ, she uses a filter on the โmemoryโ clips to
show the past and her thoughts, whereas the โpresent timeโ clips have
no filter. The most common filters used within music videos are; Black
and White or Sepia as they are successful in creating a rustic look.
โขFast and slow cuts between different shots reflect the pace of the
music in the video. This establishes the atmosphere for the music
video.
