 What is a Body Language?
 What is the importance of Body Language in
Communication?
 What are the types of Body Language?
 Reading the signs:
 Frustration and boredom
 Confidence and authority
 Lying
 Love
 Self Defense/Hiding something
 Anger and nervousness
 Body Language and cultures
 Have you ever wondered why some actors
are better than the others??
 Why some people are so good in speaking
and influencing the others and making good
impressions!!
 Why some guys are more likely to attract
beautiful girls than the others??
 Why some persons are very lucky to achieve
what they want even if they don’t have all
the qualities that they must have!!
 Why some people have such a charismatic
personality and the others don’t?
The answer is
 Body language is the unspoken or non-
verbal mode of communication that we do
in every single aspect of our interaction
with another person.
 It is like a mirror that tells us what the
other person thinks and feels in response
to our words or actions.
 Would you believe that in real life
situations, 60% to 80% of the messages
that we convey to other people are
transmitted through body language and
the actual verbal communication accounts
for only 7% to 10%?
 Facial Expression
 Eye contact
 Gestures
 Head, Body Shape and Postures
 Appearance
 A popular saying goes like this. ”The face is
the index of the heart”.What we feel deep in
ourselves is reflected in the face. It plays an
important role in face-to-face
communication, we convey a lot without
speaking a word
 Every body knows that eye contact is very
important in all face-to-face communication.
When we look at the face of somebody we
primarily focus on his eyes and try to
understand what he means.
Surprise/ Fear
Happiness/ joy
Disgust/ bad
reactions
Sadness/
depression
 The physical movement of arms, legs, hands,
chest and head are known as gestures. They
play a very important role in conveying
meaning without using words.
 In any face-to-face communication or meeting or
interview the way we hold our head, body shape
and posture is very important.
 In the next picture you will see that every posture
has an indication that reflects our psychological
situation.
 Appearance, for our purpose, includes
clothing, colors, hairstyle, jewellery,
cosmetics etc. All these may seem unrelated
to body language. But on having a closer look
we find that they are very meaningfully
related to our face, eyes, gestures, etc.
Signals
of
Confidence
Frustration
anger

Hiding

defending
love
 A hand is pointed
to someone or
something reflects
that this person is
bossy and
aggressive.
 They maintain solid eye contact and rarely looks
on other body parts underneath the nose.
 Chest projected outwards.
 They maintain a vertical posture, whether
standing or sitting.
 They move with precision and with no hesitation.
 they put their arms behind the back.
 They are pulling their
ears.This may also
signify that they want
to interrupt while
another person is
talking.
 They are rubbing their
eyes.This indicates that
the person is getting
bored and tired, and
need to relax
 Their feet or other body parts are pointing to the
exit, as if they are very eager to leave.
 They are clicking a pen non-stop.
 Head supported by the palm, often accompanied
by drooping eyes.
 They put the arms on
the waist. Beware when
they do this because it
might mean something
like “you Better listen or
you’ll regret this!”
 Their hands or feet are tapping.
 One hand is clutching the other hand, arm, or
elbow.
 Their eyes are blinking constantly.
 They are rubbing or
touching the nose, this
indicates lying but, this
can be also an
indication of deception,
doubt, or a negative
reaction to what was
said
 They are rubbing their
ring and pinky finger
 They are blinking rapidly.
 They are constantly swallowing and clearing
their throat.
 They try their best to avoid having eye contact.
 They look somewhere else and glimpse from the
corner of their eye.
 They hide their face (often the mouth) while
talking with others.
The mouth might keep a secret, but certain gestures
could indicate that people are hiding something they
don’t want others to find out, such as:
 They walk with their hands in their pockets.
 They cross their arms.
 They hide their hands any way they can.
 They are sitting while their legs are under the chair
 Somebody who is
putting two rings in the
same finger of two
hands reflect that this
person wants to find
companionship and
romance.
 The way of looking can
show us the interest of
the other person.
 Shaking hands
