Opening sequence analysis 2
Doctor dolittle (1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y
MPX0L8dcK8
The opening sequence to Doctor Dolittle is a CGI. It starts off with upbeat and
joyful music which shows the audience straight away that it’s a family film. The
music also could suggest the personality of the character in the film. The intro
uses a variety of different colours which will attract the younger audiences
attention. The opening sequence has lots of different animals in, which implies
to the audience that the film is going to be about animals. The first animal on
the opening sequence is a giraffe, the giraffe opens its mouth and one of the
actors name’s comes out, this foreshadows what happens in the film because
Dr Dolittle speaks to the animals. Some of the animals used in the opening
sequence are frightening animals however by using animation they have made
the animals look friendly so children wont be scared of them. Even though they
have used animation they have still shown all the animals in the natural
habitat, for example a camel in safari setting. The credits are written in a fun
font which shows the audience how much they are going to enjoy the film. The
animated crocodile still has red eyes which shows that it is still dangerous even
though it is animated. After the title of the film is presented the music changes
to a soft and mellowed tune which could allow the audience to relax and
enjoy the film.
Batman (1989)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h
9LU1RqKwo8
The opening sequence to Batman starts off with slow music
but when the title ‘batman’ comes up, it suddenly
changes to a more aggressive and tense beat, by doing
this they have shown the audience that the film will have a
lot of action involved. The opening sequence is very dark
and gloomy, they have made the titles in yellow, this
matches Batman’s famous colours black and yellow so it
links to the film very well. It is set at night time with dark
clouds in the sky which would usually represent the
antagonist however in this case we know that Batman is a
protagonist. The whole opening sequence is a extreme
close up going around the batman logo but you cant tell
what it is, this leaves the audience clueless and thinking
about what it is they’re looking at, this could link to the film
because it could be like a puzzle. The way the camera is
flying around the logo could make the audience feel lost
and disoriented as it flies around. At the end it slowly zooms
out to the logo when you finally find out what it is, which
foreshadows events because you find out what happens
at the end of the film.
The living daylights (1987)
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-living-daylights/
The opening shot is a hand with a red glove on, shooting a
pistol. The red connotes danger and blood, which suggests
there is violence in this film. Also someone shooting a gun implies
to the audience that it is a action film. As the title appears in a
clear white font, there is a extreme close up of a woman's face
in the background looking worried. She could be looking like this
because of the golden pistol in front of her face. The camera
then zooms out to her putting some sunglasses on, there is then
a two shot inside the sunglasses. The two shot is of a man
defending a woman. This could suggest that she is the person
being saved because of the camera going into the sunglasses,
it looks like its going into her sight. A woman laying down pulls a
pistol out and shoots these two people who are red. The red
colour makes it obvious to the audience that these are
antagonists. There is another two shot of the man and the
woman again however this time they both have guns shooting
people. This suggests that the woman has joined his side and
helping the man kill the enemies. We can tell these are the
protagonists because they are shown in a black shadow and
not red. Some of the opening sequence is shown with the
characters in water, this could foreshadow an event in the film.
Skyfall
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/skyfall/#
Skyfall’s opening sequence is a CGI and is set underwater. It starts with the main character James Bond falling into the
sea. It looks as if he is unconscious which could imply to the audience that he could possibly drown. There is an extreme
close up shot of a hand pulling him down to the dark and deep sea. As she pulls him down the song lyrics say ‘this is the
end’, this suggests to the audience that something bad is happening to 007. there is then a shot from James Bond’s
point of view. We can see him looking down towards a hole and he is getting sucked towards it. The point of view shot
will put the audience in his shoes causing them to think how they would feel in this situation. As he falls through the hole,
he then appears and is still falling. There is lots of human cut out targets of 007, and one of them is bleeding from the
heart, this implies that he could be dying. You see a gun fall and hit the sea bed and sand clouds up over it, the
audience can infer that this is James Bond’s gun. It then changes to a graveyard at the bottom of the sea with guns
and knifes falling onto the sea bed. This shows the audience how much violence and action is involved in the film. There
is then a shot of a scary looking house with a red misty fog around it, the red connotes the danger of the building. As it
gets closer, there is a big tear in the wall with Bond’s eyes peaking through it. This implies the endangerment that he is in
because of the setting he is in. There is then a extreme close up on 007’s eye, he looks very serious which shows how
professional he is. The next shot is of orange ink floating around, if you look closely, it then forms to make a skull. A skull
connotes death, this foreshadows events in the film. The camera zooms into a gun and suddenly all the human cut out
targets are on fire. There are then dragons swimming around the ocean. This implies that there was loads of people
trying to kill 007. later on in the opening sequence it goes to another graveyard and there is a gravestone with ‘Bond’
engraved into it, this suggests he is dead. This would confuse the audience and keep them thinking because a main
character doesn’t normally die. There is another POV shot as Bond looks up to loads of mirrors. In the next shot, Bond is
shown with a bullet wound to the chest. This could indicate an event that happens later on in the film, which will keep
the audience on the edge of their seat. The camera zooms into the wound a there is a shot of a previous event with the
scary building. This time it zooms into Bond’s eyes however his eyes are a much lighter blue colour. This suggests he
could be healthier.
Control (2007)
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/control/
The opening sequence starts with an extreme close up of the main
character. He looks depressed and lost, this shows the audience the
characters personality. There is a voice over from the main character
speaking about his life. The next shot is a mid shot with a slight high
angle, this makes the character look vulnerable, this relates to the
character because of him being depressed. The title is then
presented and is flickering, this implies that someone is in control of it
which links with the title ‘Control’. There is a long shot of the
character walking past a block of flats. The colour is in black and
white, this connotes sadness which links to the character. A title
comes up and tells the audience that the character died when he
was 23 years old. It then shows the credits of the actors with a black
background behind it. This could be a POV from the dead person.
The music is very miserable at the start. In the last 30 seconds of the
opening sequence it then changes to an upbeat tune. This would
confuse the audience leaving them thinking about why the mood
has suddenly changed.
