Research question
How can new modes of knowledge production and exchange, such as
transdisciplinary research, knowledge management for development and
social capital, improve approaches to sustainable development?
Three parts
• What are the challenges facing local knowledge for development?
• Are there any interesting approaches which can help address these
challenges?
• Are these new approaches relevant to local development at the
grassroots?
ontwikkeling?
What is local knowledge?/Wat is lokale
kennis?
• Related to language taal
• Based on experience ervaring
• Often tested over centuries of use eeuwen van gebruik
• Adapted to the local culture and environment lokale cultuur en milieu
• Embedded in community practices, institutions, relationships and
rituals gemeenschap praktijken, instellingen, relaties en rituelen
• Held by individuals or communities individuen en gemeenschappen
• Dynamic and changing dynamische en veranderende
Why is local knowledge important?
Waarom is lokale kennis belangrijk?
• Local knowledge and local realities should be the starting point of all
development
• Without an understanding the value of one’s own local knowledge,
individuals and communities cannot take a critical perspective to
other knowledges
Current status of local knowledge?
Huidige status van lokale kennis?
Case 1: Local knowledge in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Casus 1:Lokale kennis in de duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelen
Knowledge and knowledge societies in SDGs, agreed by the UN in September
2015 Kennis en kennis samenlevingen in de SDGs
Case 2: Academic journals in the field of development
Studies
Casus 2: Wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op het gebied
van ontwikkelingsstudies
What are the barriers facing local knowledge?
Wat zijn de barrières tegen lokale kennis?
• Marginalised and undervalued, compared with other types of
knowledge, such as scientific knowledge
Gemarginaliseerde en ondergewaardeerd
• SDGs and journals show a mismatch between transformational vision
and ‘business as usual’ implementation
wanverhouding tussen transformationele visie en daadwerkelijke
implementatie
New approaches to knowledge
Nieuwe benaderingen om kennis
• Transdisciplinary research involves citizens and local people, co-creation of knowledge
and recognises the complexity of persistent problems transdisciplinair onderzoek
• Knowledge management for development (and the KM4Dev community)
kennismanagement voor ontwikkelingssamenwerking
• Social capital = the resources accessible through one’s social network
But how are these approaches relevant to the grassroots in developing countries….
Development programme in Bangladesh
Ontwikkelingsprogramma in Bangladesh
• Researchers (Athena Institute), an NGO (PRIDE) and local people: village leaders, women and
their families onderzoekers van Athena Instituut, locale organisatie, locale mensen, vrouwen
• Trandisciplinary approach transdisciplinaire aanpak
• Jessore District
• Poor families: very few possessions, makeshift houses, hand-to-mouth existence, two meals
a day, unequal gender relations arme families, twee maaltijden per dag, honger
• Focus on social capital came from women themselves:
Belang van ‘sociaal capital’ gezien door arme vrouwen:
“People who have lots of friends and who can communicate
openly with others: they can improve their lives. But people
who are poor and cannot communicate well are not able to
make that sort of progress: they do not know other people,
they cannot have information.”
“In.” Sherina
"
In the group, they ask questions,
but they also come to me at other
times to listen to my suggestions.
Sherina
In de groep, ze stellen vragen
maar ze komen ook voor mij
op andere momenten om
mijn suggesties te horen.

daughter to school. Because as a
beneficiary I can earn money, I can
buy books and clothes so it is easier
to send my daughter to school.
Salima
In deze foto, stuur ik mijn dochter
naar school. Want als begunstigde
kan ik geld te verdienen, kan ik
boeken en kleren kopen, zodat het
gemakkelijker is om mijn dochter
naar school te sturen..

“I can now buy the things for my children to study. I do not depend anymore on my
husband (…) In this photo, I am giving money to my husband.”
