Saskatchewan in motion created the 30-30-30 model to encourage a shared approach to providing physical activity for kids. Saskatchewan in motion recommends kids achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity by participating in 30 minutes of physical activity at home, in the community and at school. This presentation focuses on the 30 minutes of physical activity at school.

- Kids spend nearly half of their waking hours each day at school. Because of this, the school is an excellent place for kids to be physically active. Physical activity at school is a great way for kids to release extra energy which will enable them to become more focused on their school work. Including physical activity in the classroom has even been shown to result in slight academic gains, despite the time being taken away from other subjects. - Becoming an in motion school. Your school can become an in motion school by committing to provide all students with 30 minutes of physical activity over and above the physical education curriculum. These 30 minutes do not need to be consecutive. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the day to have quick physical activity breaks such as taking a walk or running on the spot. These quick breaks can take place before and after school, during recesses, lunch hour, during school assemblies and in the hallways or classrooms.
- Ensure actualization of the physical education curriculum The physical education curriculum is constructed so that youth learn a variety of skills as well as healthy lifestyle habits. Especially at a young age, kids need this time to develop basic skills, like running, jumping and throwing, so that as they progress through life, they will have the skills needed to participate in all forms of physical activity. Physical education needs to be considered as important to a student’s education as other subjects. If a school views physical education as a key component to the development of their students, they will ensure that the benchmarks prescribed in the physical education curriculum are being met.
- Implement a Daily Physical Activity Policy. The Ministry of Education’s Inspiring Minds: Physical activity policy framework and guidelines document suggests that schools create policy to ensure all students receive 30 minutes of physical activity at school every day. This policy aligns with in motion ’s 30-30-30 model which prescribes 30 minutes of physical activity in the school, community and family settings. Some schools might decide to create their own Daily Physical Activity policy from scratch, but the Ministry’s document is an excellent place to start. To help teachers incorporate physical activity into their lesson plans, Saskatchewan in motion created a Daily Physical Activity Manual with over 150 quick and easy activities for kindergarten to grade 8 teachers. Most of the activities require no equipment, so students can participate in a quick activity break without spending valuable time on set up. The entire DPA Manual can be downloaded off of the in motion website where other great tools and resources are available.
