Introduction
Kolkata, being one of the major hubs as far as India’s Industrial and Business
scenario is concerned; there is a steady increase in electricity demand in the
city. The scorching and sultry weather is also one of the key factors in this
regard. Every summer we see a rush ofapplications for new ACs leading to
heavy increase in load demand and hence system capacity.
Now, CESC has this responsibility of distributing power to the entire
population of 3 million in the metropolitan area of Kolkata and Howrah,
some portions of North & South 24 Parganas for which it has to maintain a
large distribution network. The distribution system is healthy and reliable
investments are made on an ongoing basis to maintain the network.
In addition to maintenance, CESC is constantly making efforts, inviting new
ideas to improve the existing network, starting from Distribution
Transformer up to the service end to meet various challenges faced by it on
daily basis.
Mainly distribution systems are of 2 types, they are-
• Primary Distribution system (33KV/11KV or 6KV)
• Secondary Distribution system (11KV or 6KV/400V)
Mains (Distribution) have two wings - LT and HT. Each of them has many
subdivisions. LT department is concerned with the secondary distribution
network (11 or 6kV/ 400V) that supplies electricity to domestic, commercial
and some industrial consumers. It basically deals with the fault detection,
restoration, new meter connection, LT cable joining etc. in LT network.
Day Wise Report:
Day 1 Report:
On Tuesday 19/07/2022, I reported at around 9 am at Jadavpur office. Asst.
Engineer sir Samaresh Gantait referred me to Mr Z. Khan, with him I went the
site Survery Park Kolkata.
Job Details: Two new service done on the 1462, Survey Park building and also
removal of old service under the supervisor Mr Z.Khan.
According to the job we have to place a new pole in front of this building.
• Firstly, a new pole is installed in front of the building and after that we
take connection from the nearest pole. A overhead service is done with 4
core LT AB (Arial Bunch) type cable used for this purpose. One G.I pipes
are sunk into holes dug with the help of earth Auger.
Job Slip for 49 mtr cable Job Slip for 45 mtr cable
After the pole installation we placed a 1100v underground service for main line
of the building. One cable is 49mtr long and another is 45mtr long according to
plan.
Laying of Service cable:
• Applicant’s details from job slip must be
verified.
• The meter board position and the wall for
fixing board must be verified.
• Depth of laying cable is 75 cm.
• Cable should be laid inside pipes
wherever crossing any installation of
other agencies and to be adequately
protected.
• Pre-cut length of cable is laid in trench
prepared and within pipes laid for this
purpose.
New Building where the work is done Pole arrived for installation
• The service cable should be containing a loop in ground below meter
board. This cable must enter meter board through a 75mm dia PVC pipe
1.0-meter-long placed vertically below ground.
For Joining the Connection:
The line was off for 1 hours form the
nearby pillar box and the jumper was
opened from the other side. Pillar boxes
are units from where the distribution takes
place i.e. they act as nodes. There are of
two types namely Feeder Pillar Box and
Distribution Pillar Box. In case of Feeder
Pillar Box it is connected to (400 mm2 XLPE
1.1kV grade cable) coming from the L.T end
of the transformer. While in a distribution
pillar box it may be connected to some
other pillar box or an overhead pole via
underground cables.
As the main work finished, the line was to
be normalised but before that they had to
check if there is any fault in the line.
Meter Board Installation:
• The main switch or MCB must
be identified.
• The board must be at least 1.0
meter verticaly above the floor
level.
• Earthing Brackets must be
provided to all meter boards.
• Asbestos millboards are fixed
over the rear wall for fre
protection.

New Meter Installed
Day 2 Report:

• Two nos. 4.5 mtr long and 50m dia C.I pipes are sunk into holes dug with
the help of earth Auger.
• The holes are 600mm apart and dug 450 mm away from pillar box.
• The neutral conductor is earthed only at Feeder box.
• Neural earth and body earth must be done on opposite side of the box
and separated by one meter.
Day 3 Report:
On Friday 22/07/2022, I reported at around 9 am at Jadavpur office. Asst.
Engineer sir Samaresh Gantait referred me to Prasanta sir, with him I went the
site Nava Nagar Colony.
Job Details: Jadavpur O/T No.1 U5—240 sqmm PVC dist. feed sing ACPB 316 U3
found 9R)/ (Red Phase No current).
Fault Type: Distributer Fault.
Pillar Box: JADAVPURE O/T T.1.F-1&2.
Cable Size: 240 Sqmm.
• Service was cut off from two pillar box. The Fault is happened on a linked
cable. Another pillar box we see the R phase is missing that means the
voltage of a R phase is zero. In case of linked cable, we have to punch the
cable to locate the fault.
• To perform punch or pin the cable we digging at the middle of the cable
length. Lamp test was done to locate different feeders and incomers.
• Necessary steps were taken in the pillar box so that underground digging
can be done safely to locate the fault.
• Several pockets were made in the ground to locate the fault. It was done
in the pin test method.
Faulty Pillar Box Fault occur on fifth number unit
After cut off the faulty part then that cable was prepared for the join. Using 240-
240 straight joint kit for joining this cable.
Finally, after the completed the joint check all the line and then supply was
resumed.
Pin Test is running Main Faulty Part
Cable joining is running Pour the mixture compound in the joint
Conclusion:
I have completed my training in LT cell from Jadavpur site under Mr
Soumyabrata Mazumder from the period of 18/07/2022 to 23/07/2022.
Throughout the training period I learned about new supply lines, Underground
distribution cable fault, service fault about pillar box etc.
The training was very an important as it helps to gain practical knowledge about
the subject which will helped me to gain practical knowledge and experience.
