- 1. Innovation Workshop 2013 Session 2: Learning Activities that use digital tools

- 3. Finding a tool is not the problem… using tools effectively is the challenge! In this session we will: • Look at examples of where digital tools have been used to enhance Learning Activities • We will consider: • How does the tool engage learners? • What can be done using ICT that could not be done without it? • How does the tool support knowledge building? - 4. Windows Live Movie Maker and Photostory Turn photos and video clips into movies and slide shows Add in music, sub-titles, special effects and credits
- 5. 5 High School Life Sciences learners made movies using Movie Maker to explain an aspect of HIV/AIDS as an infomercial. Nikkie Wallace – St Cyprians: Western Cape
- 6. Kabelo Mahlatsi – Leqele High School: Lesotho High School English learners modernised Julius Caesar and set it in Lesotho with Moshoeshoe in the starring role!
- 7. High School History learners created movies out of still photos that illustrated the effects of various Apartheid laws. Sue Ausmeier – Durban Girls College: KwaZulu-Natal
- 8. Autocollage Select a folder of photos, push a button and watch as your images get swirled into a collage.
- 9. Autocollage to test understanding of primary school maths concepts: polygons, tessellations and symmetry. Hafeeza Ebrahim Mayet – Marlboro Gardens: Gauteng
- 10. Maxwell Funo – Mkhanyiseli Primary School: Western Cape Autocollage to raise awareness of polluted public spaces and a need for parks in a community.
- 11. Songsmith Choose a style from pop, jazz, reggae etc. and a tempo. Sing into the PC microphone and Songsmith will then generate musical accompaniment to match your voice.
- 12. Nkosilathi Dlodlo Batswana Secondary School: NorthWest Learners investigated causes of water shortages and raised awareness. One tool for this was a Songsmith song.
- 13. Stickysorter Organise your notes or have a brain storm using virtual sticky notes
- 14. Flashcards Make your own or use those that are already there. Smart, fun assessment!
- 15. Mouse Mischief • Download the Multiple-Mouse toolbar for PowerPoint. • Make a presentation that includes yes/no, multiple choice or drawings. • Connect multiple mouses to one computer. • Let learners choose an icon and start the activity. This slide allows learners to each select an answer from the options given. Here learners draw lines on the picture using their mouses.

Learners investigated tessellations and created an AutoCollage of these. Learners folded nets of 3D shapes to form buildings and decorated these in the Arts and Culture lessons using MS Paint. Learners then used the model to find out more about cardinal points, measurements and even and odd numbers.

The grade seven learners photographed the affected learners and interviewed people living near the polluted areas. They are now investigating solutions and raising the issue with the municipality and City of Cape Town.

Interviews were conducted with the community and a local mining industry next to the school; models were constructed; research took place in the lab and a song was produced. Findings were presented to the MEC of Education for further consideration.
