GENRES OF
MUSIC
MAGAZINES
DONE BY EMAN SHAH
POP
Pop magazines are generally very bright and cheerful which attracts
readers to make them consume the magazine. Mainly the colours on
the pop magazine tend to be pinks and purples so this will mean that
the magazine will especially attract teenage girls. This will imply that
the target audience will be teenage girls. The main image on the front
cover will be a very popular and recent singer who teenage girls like
to listen to. There is always one medium close up of an famous artist
on the cover. Also the language used in the magazine is very simple
and clear. I think this is done so that the target audience can easily
understand the points and the stories.
These are examples of Pop magazines,
as you can see here they have used
bright colours on these two magazine,
to imply youth and energy.
DECONSTRUCTION OF A
POP MUSIC MAGAZINE
This is the masthead of the
magazine. The colour used on
the masthead is pink which
indicates it is a girly magazine.
So this will suggest that the
target audience will be quite
young. Also the mast head
stands out onto the light
background. It is also fairly
bright. This will ensure that the
readers will notice the magazine
from far.
The cover lines are pink and
purple which follows the
house style of the page. They
are also organised in Rule Of
Thirds which makes the page
easier to read and makes it
look simple.
The house style used is pink,
purple, yellow and white, which
are all happy colours and create
a happy atmosphere in the
magazine. The font used most is
pink and purple which show that
the target audience would be
girls, as boys don not like the
colour pink.
The main image of the magazine
if of a very famous singer called
Britany. The image is large and
she is directly facing the focal
point of the camera. She uses
direct contacts which will make
the readers feel invited and more
personal. She also connotes
happiness by smiling which will
make the audience consume the
product.
All the small images are of teen
celebs of artists related to pop. So
this suggests that ‘top of the
pop’s is a pop magazine. By using
a lot of imagery on the page also
suggests that the target audience
is quite young, as young people
like to see a lot of visual images
to stay entertained.
Alliteration has also been
used because the main cover
line says ‘BEHAVE BRITNEY’
which will tell the reader
inside about what Britney has
lately been up to.
The barcode and the price is placed at the bottom. This is put here to inform the reader how
mush the magazine costs. The price of the magazine is £3.99 which is quite expensive which
also shows that is aimed at a young audience who still get their working parents to buy the
magazine for them.
HIP HOP
Hip Hop is a subculture that came into being in the 1970’s by the
fusion of Latin American and African American. This type of magazine
is classified into four types of sub components and they are rapping,
graffiti, DJ’ing and breaking. Hip Hop magazines used dark colours
which connotes power and authority. The target audience for hip hop
magazines would be mostly older teenagers and young adults. This is
because this is the type of music that they would listen to in their
generation. The magazine usually use a large main image of a hip hop
artist that slightly would cover the masthead, which will give the front
cover a bold effect.
Here are examples of Hip Hop
magazines. We can see that the
main image is slightly covering the
masthead. This is done to create a
bold effect.
CLASSICAL
Classical music magazines show music which is very slow and
relaxing. The colour scheme of the magazine is very light and use
soft colours for example white. The main image on the front cover of
the classical magazine will be of an artist who has done a recent
performance that features as the main highlight of the magazine. The
most outstanding aspect of classical music will be the repertoire
which will be written down in musical notation, creating a musical
part or score. This score will typically determine details of rhythm
pitch, where two or more musicians are involved. Classical music will
be aimed at the older generation as classic music is slow and
relaxing which the older generation enjoy listening to.
As you can see here, here are two
classical music magazines which look
very simple and the older generation will
be interested in reading this because
there is not too much writing and is very
simple.
ROCK
Rock music is a genre of a popular music that originated as ‘rock
and roll’. Rock magazines usually use the colour scheme of dark
colours. However the target audience for this music type would not
be limited to a specific age group, people of various age groups,
teenagers as well as middle aged people. These kind of people tend
to be the target audience of rock magazines. The artist on the front
cover will tend to wear dark clothing, mostly leather or sometimes
ripped to show the edginess of music. They will also tend to have a
lot of tattoos and piecing. Within the rock the make up will be dark
and heavy using eye shadow and eyeliner to enhance their
appearance so they stand out. In rock magazines the most common
prop is the instruments like the electrical guitar.
These are two music magazines, as I have said
above that the most common instrument in rock
is the electrical guitar. The first magazine shows
a girl holding a electric magazine. I think this is
done so that the reader will automatically know
that the magazine is of a rock genre.
DECONSTRUCTION OF A
ROCK MUSIC MAGAZINE The masthead is large and
placed at the top. It is called
‘REVOLVER’. As it is the name of
the magazine and needs to stand
out to be recognisable to the
target audience.
This is the main image of the
magazine. The main image slightly
covers the masthead, but the fans
will recognise what magazine it is if
they read it a lot. The costume that
the girls ae wearing is mostly
leather which connotes how rock
musicians dress like. They are
dressed in black which stereotypes
rock music and gothic style.
Here is the barcode which is
place at the bottom and is on the
side of the magazine which will
tell the reader how much the
magazine will cost to purchase.
This is the main cover line it is
quite large and placed on the
left hand side of the front
cover. The word ‘Hottest’
persuades the audience to
read the magazine and catch
its interest. The black and
white text on the main cover
line links to the colour
scheme which is black, white,
grey, yellow and red.
A red, black, white, yellow
and grey colour scheme
have been used. Red is an
eye catching colour and is
therefore effective in
attracting the audience.
These colours also link to
the genre of the magazine
and red is bright and could
represent the loudness of the
rock music.
The girl on the left is holding
a guitar. This is the most
well known instrument
known in rock music.
R&B
The R&B magazine are normally very brightly coloured. The target
audience for such magazines are without doubt teenagers judging by
the language used in this kind of magazine. However there is a content
of hip hop shown in R&B. So this shows that there is a gap in the
market. The cover page usually features a singer with a recent release
of an album. Not a lo of text is used in R&B magazines but a significant
amount of images are used. The costume used in R&B magazines for
the artist will be mostly casual clothing: jeans, hoodies, party shirts
and more. These are the type of clothing that R&B singers would wear
depending on the song.
These are R&B magazines. In my opinion
I think that the artists featured on the
front cover so a lot of power and attitude
because on the first magazine Eminem
has got a lots of tattoos o his arms,
which makes him look tuff.
