History of Muslim Education
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
‘Knowledge teaches discrimination between
good or bad and encandle to reach Allah
Almighty.”
 He was illiterate but was able to educate his
companions philosophy, ethics, psychology ,
principle of education.
Al- Ghazzali(1058-1111 AD)
An individual is modified through
education so that he may lead his life
according to Islamic teaching by getting
God’s will.
 He is the paragon for many muslims.
 His book Kitab-al-Munqidh min-al-Dalal is
liberal arts of education.
 His book is about the truth of life.
Ibn – Khaldun(1332-1406 AD)
“Education is the activity of the
acquisition of revealed knowledge
that has been delivered to us by
prophets.”
 He emphasized that the aim of
education was not to specialists
in limited or narrow subjects ,
but was mainly the desire to
provide students with science
that would help them to live a
good life.
Shah Walli Allah (1703-62)
“Education is a process that enables a
man to discriminate between bad or
good and teach him to opt for goodness
and screw badness.”
 He was first Indian Muslim scholar to
translate Quran into Persian.
He initiated the movement with the
theme ‘’BACK TO QURAN.’’
Allama Muhammad Iqbal
“Education is the activity of
recognizing Allah and
understanding self.”
 Iqbal rejected stereotyped
methods of teaching which give
no space for thinking.
He favoured methods of self
activity & learning by doing
methods which comforts the
students.
Development of Education in the British period
Charter Act 1813:
 The east India company’s charter came up for
renewal in 1813.
Clause 43 was inserted in the charter.
 The improvement in revival and literature in
India.
The introduction and promotions of the
knowledge of the sciences in inhabitants of
India.
Changes Brought About By The Charter:
 For the first time the British parliament admitted
that education in India has a claim on public
revenue.
 The commercial monopoly of the company in
India was terminated.
 Restriction made on all missionary members In
North-India were removed.
Recommendations of Lord Macaulay
 An educational directorate must be set up in
every district.
 All the capitals of Calcutta, Dehli, Mumbai,
Madras universities must be established private
school must be awarded grants.
Teacher training schools must be set up in South
Asia.
Female education must also be given due
importance and duly patronized.
Recommendation of Wood’s Despatch
 Accepting responsibility.

What is movement education?
“A strand of teaching or education which
aims to educate individuals to develop their
motor skills through physical movement”.
Ali – garh Movement
 Sir Syed Ahmed Khan started the Ali- garh
movement to rescue the national pride of
Muslims.
 He wanted that the Muslim nation to ne educate
to keep pace with modern advancement.
 He established educational institutions for the
Muslims youth and guided them both
theoraticaly or practicaly.
