The VR Revolution is here now, it is here to stay and with the file sizes we are talking about it is going to have a big impact on the network.

The Virtual Reality Revolution: Impact on the Network

  1. 1. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 Shanti Korporaal Co-Founder & Director of Virtual Projects - VR The World The Virtual Reality Revolution The Impact on the Network
  2. 2. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD The Virtual Reality Revolution • The VR Revolution is here… in the news almost every day • Everyone now has it – Facebook, YouTube mean a billion people • Why now? VR hasbeen around for decades • Cheap, Easy, MUCH better quality • Will it impact the network? In a big way
  3. 3. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD VR – Up to 2015 • Facebook bought Oculus Rift for $2billion (March 2014) • Head Mounted Displays (HMD) Samsung Gear VR (with Oculus), Oculus Rift DK’s, Google Cardboard • Gaming and Adult Film industries already embracing VR • Live Steaming Events – Presidential Debate, MTV EMAs, NBA, Soccer, Nascar, NHL
  4. 4. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD VR - 2016 • Gaming (and adult film) boom – Sony has PlayStation VR (Morpheus), Xbox and Oculus partnered – Windows 10 is VR ready, Nintendo NX rumors • First VR movie will probably hit (Not a James Cameron film!), Star Wars 8? • Rise in business usage – tourism, high value sales - real estate, yachts … • Use in heath and education • More live streaming events (Concerts, US 2016 election, News, Sports) • 1st VR Christmas • Apple? Hello?
  5. 5. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD VR - Content • 360 Photos (Panorama ++) • 360 Videos (Experiences) • VR Live chat rooms(3rd Life?) • Live streaming events • 360 Gaming – the big one • Education
  6. 6. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD VR - Uses • Education will be huge. Some schools already have been using it, especially history, geography and even math. Unis will embrace it • Heath – Rehabilitation, Therapy, Meditation/Relaxation • Medical – VR Surgery – Training and Remote • Gaming – Fully immersive, Simulations • Entertainment – Movies – sit on the moon and watch Netflix, Concerts – actually be there • Experiences will be the BIG thing for most people Tourism/Travel, Pleasure (Adult), things difficult (or expensive) to do
  7. 7. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD VR - Content – Who? • There is a LOT of content already – mostly experiences and some early gaming • Hamilton Island and the Great Barrier Reef – Qantas & AWOL • Oculus store – 360 photos: Mars, around the world. 360 Cirque du Soleil a big hit • Concerts (Paul McCartney), Scuba Diving, Car Driving, Star Wars 7 VR Trailer
  8. 8. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD VR – The Bandwidth • Cirque du Soleil Kurios 10mins - 2.8Gb • Adult films 20min - 4.3Gb • Foreign Nature 10mins - 3Gb • Perfect Beach 30mins – 3.6Gb *Note: average Blu-Ray movie is 4Gb for 1.5-2hours • VR Experiences 3-6x currently downloaded content. Netflix hasn’t even gone to 4K video in Australia
  9. 9. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD The Networks - Australia • Mobile networks 3G: 5Mb – in major cities 4G: 12-15Mb (*Australian speeds) 4GX: top speed 150Mb 5G: Gb coming (due 2017-2021) • WiFi networks 802.11b/g: 11/54Mb 802.11n/ac: up to 1.3Gb 802.11ax: potentially 10Gb without more spectrum it will get worse and ax not ratified until 2019 – kit will sooner (2016) • Public Carrier WiFi is on the rise – Telstra Air, Optus, TPG..
  10. 10. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD Data Plan Hell • TodaysExamples Mobile Plans: • Telstra $70 – 7GB Vodafone $80 – 11GB Optus $70 – 10GB • Optus just launched Fixed Wireless 4G - $70 for 50Gb • Thanks to OTT services like Netflix most Fixed line plans have been increased and will have no issues with VR. However, coverage still an issue while waiting for NBN • Just like Netflix, carrierswill have to figure out how to handle the large VR media
  11. 11. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD 2016/17 – The Networks • More Data in plans • More Apps being used – Death of SMS and normal calls. OTT - WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Skype, etc. • More Speed - More 4GX from more carriers • More Coverage - means new customers – even more network load • More Demand – not a lot for 4GX right now – use cases will drive demand • VR, IoT, SVOD, Cloud Storage, Mobile Gaming, Mobile Education, AR appearing • Will have to be priced reasonably
  12. 12. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD Summary • VR is here to stay – AR is following • Large file sizes on more devices means greater stress on WiFi and mobile networks. Larger devices will mean even more data stored • Service providers will need to allow for larger more flexible plans • New wireless network standards need to be rolled out faster to cope • We need to innovate… we need new ways to deal with the demands. OTT is the networks worst nightmare... and it is only going to get worse
