2. AC GENERATOR
● It is also called dynamo or alternator.
● It converts one form of energy into another form ,i.e., Mechanical to
Electrical Energy.
● It operates through the interaction between a magnetic field and coil.
● It works on the principle of Electromagnetic Induction.
● When the coil is rotated in an uniform magnetic field with its axis
perpendicular to the magnetic field.
● The magnetic flux linked with the coil changes and an induced EMF
and hence a current is set up in it.

4. Components of AC Generator
● Magnet: It is a strong electromagnet or permanent magnet that
produces strong magnetic field between its pole.
● Armature coil: It consists of a rectangular coil having copper wire
wound on a soft iron core that is rotated in magnetic field about an
axis perpendicular to field.
● Slip rings: The ends of armature coil are connected to two coaxial
brass ring called slip rings. They rotate with the armature coil about
the same axis of rotation and transfer the current.

5. Components of AC Generator
● Brushes: These are graphite rods that are connected to slip rings and
transfer the current generated to the external circuit.
● Prime Mover: It is the component that is used to drive the AC
Generator. It is a rotating machine like a diesel engine, steam turbine
or a motor.

6. Working of AC Generator
● An AC Generator uses Faraday’s laws of induction to calculate the
EMF generated by cutting the magnetic flux.
● The angle is changing at the angular frequency 𝜔. So for a given
moment in time, the angle between normal to area and magnetic field
lines will be 𝜔𝑡.
● Flux linkage, 𝜑𝑁 will be BAN cos(𝜔𝑡). Differentiating cos(𝜔𝑡) with
respect to t.
● Formula 𝐸 =
𝑁𝑑∅
𝑑𝑡
= −
BAN d cos 𝜔𝑡
𝑑𝑡
= 𝜔BAN sin(𝜔𝑡)

7. Applications of AC Generator
● Electric Generators: They are used in homes, factories, offices and in
vehicles to get electricity.
● Diesel electric locomotive alternators.
● Marine alternators: They are used in yachts are similar to automotive
alternators just with some adaptations for salt water.
