The Geometry of Feeling
Synopsis No: 1
Author: Juhani Pallasmaa
In the descriptionby Juhani Pallasmaa, the author discussedhowarchitecture could be more than just merely
a building form but a place where it could actually conjure the imagination and the senses provoked by the
user’s experiencing the spaces within through the “inner language of the building”.
“The advance of modern science has been dominated by the principle of elementarism and reductionism.”
(p.1). I particularly can relate and see eye to eye with this context because even though the popularized
minimalism has beenwidely favoured by this generationdue to the simplistic appealing to the designerwhere
not much deep thoughts have been implemented in contrast to the past such as art deco and renaissance
style where art and sculptures have been sustained through centuries. These legacies lasted and told the
stories and civilization of the people of that era and actually provoke “the consciousness of the person
experiencing the space.”
In addition, the author consider the sense of “loneliness” could experienced by the inhibitors through the
space when the architecture language has “fulfilled the basic conditions formulated for itphenomenologically
as a symbol ofhuman existence itis abled to influence emotional feelings linker to our souls with the images
a building creates.” In my opinion, I think a strong architectural space does notproduces only the sense of
loneliness instead italso creates the feeling oftogetherness broughttogether by the community. Itis amazing
how a successful piece ofarchitecture could attract and unite a segregated society together and rejoice art
and culture with people with actually engaging interaction with the real world which is what lacking in this
modern society.
In conclusion, the importance between the relationship of art and architecture can’t never be separated as
both compromises each of what is left and great architecture doesn’tspeaks to you through the eyes but
direct to your heart.
