international
• The WHO estimated that
by 2005, at least 1.6 billion
and 400 million people
aged above 15 years were
overweight and obese
respectively. It further
projected that by 2015,
these statistics will
increase to 2.3 billion for
overweight and 700
million for obesity,
Ethiopia
• In Ethiopia, one
study conducted in Addis
Ababa in 2007 reported that
the prevalence of overweight
and obesity on elementary
school students were 7.6%and
0.9% respectively
Literature review
skin caliper, HDL and LDL.
 Need blood sample
 need laboratory and expert lab technician
 uses sophisticated equipment(chemistry
analyzer)
Body composition depends on age ,weight and
Sex. Existing solution doesn’t consider those
parameter
Complex and expensive
Less accuracy
Existing solution and gaps
Goals
Designing body fat
analyzer which is used
to analyze
 Total body water(TBW)
 Fat free mass(FFM)
 Percentage of body fat
which operate with
English Oromic and
Amharic
Constraint
 Low cost
 Accurate
 Simple to use
 Non invasive
 portable
Goal and constraint
sssssssss
 Lack of awareness and device unavailability
leads to in proportional body composition
which causes the severe chronic disease.
Need statement
 Providing early detection of severe chronic
disease caused by in proportional body
composition using BIA method.
Problem definition
To design multi language device used to
analyze fat free mass ,total body water and
percentage of body fat.
Approaches
• Designing BFA Using two BIA electrodes
• Designing the BFA device by ECG
• Designing BFA Using four BIA electrodes
Approach and design solution
• We picked 8 most important criteria ,the ones that
absolutely must be included
Reliability Cost
Durability User friendly
Portability accuracy
Easy to design sensitivity
• Pugh matrix was used to select the best design and
select the design with highest score body fat analyzer
using four BIA electrode.

Final prototype
• FFM(fat free mass)
 indicates muscular strength
 should be high in healthy person
 inversely related to body fat
 developed through exercise and
controlling body fat
Device output
• TBW (total body water)
indicates the status of hydration and dehydration
high TBW= hydration
=good health status
=safe metabolic process
low TBW= dehydration
=low metabolic rate
=causes kidney failure

Test performed and relation with
key criteria
Uncontrolled body composition leads to severe
chronic disease. So designing BIA device is
important for routine monitoring of body
composition and early detection of chronic
disease .
The BIA device is constructed by achieving
the desired constraints.
Conclusion
 making BIA to analyze
• early detection of cancerous tissue
• bone density
• integrating weighting scale and audio
• functionality of kidney based on dehydration
amount.
• body shape abnormalities
manufacturing and sell validation
