  2. 2. Social media is a new form of mass media. It is defined as human beings having conversations and relationships through the use of online technology. In business, social media increases reach (global) and audience. Other benefits include: •* Low cost •* Personalisation •* Flexibility •* Measurability •* SEO Social Media
  3. 3. Facebook Originated in 2004 as a social network for recreational use. It has now been embraced by B2C businesses trying to boost engagement through competitions and interactive discussions. Some stats: • 1.49 billion daily active users on average for September 2018 •2.27 billion monthly active users as of September 30, 2018 How to use it • Create a Page and promote events • Sell things on marketplace • Have discussions with friends or publicly • Ask questions • Join groups • Keep in touch with friends and family • Use messenger for free calls
  4. 4. Has been around since 2007 and is available in 34 languages. It’s defined as a micro-blogging platform because of its text restriction to up to 280 characters (was 140). Some 2018 stats: • 336 million monthly active users worldwide • 74% of Twitter users say they use the network to get their news How to use it •Create a Twitter profile •Follow influencers, celebrities and media personalities •Build up your following by offering good content or retweeting • See what is happening in the world before the BBC steps in (but be wary of fake news)!   5. 5. Launched in 2003, LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network online. It is a platform for finding people, recruiting staff and discussing industry topics. Some stats (2018): • Over 562 million members in 200 countries • Near 11 million company profiles How to use it: •Create a company profile • Publish updates • Connect with employers or industry professionals • Ask/answer questions or give/ask for recommendations • Write articles LinkedIn
  6. 6. YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google. Launched in 2005, it currently boasts over 1 billion unique users each month. Online videos have moved from entertainment to education, including “How To” videos. It is used by mass media agencies to showcase TV adverts and by bands to publicise songs. Some stats (2017-8): • Over 1 billion users each month • 1 billion hours watched every day How to use it • Create an account • Upload your videos and get the code to embed them on a blog or website. • Use keywords to categorise videos • Spread your videos through other Social Media channels YouTube
  7. 7. Fast-growing photo-sharing platforms launched in 2010, now being challenged by mobile app Instagram. Pinterest stats (2017): • Over 250 million monthly users worldwide • 81% of users are female • 40% of new signups are men How to use Pinterest • Collect photos, grouped in theme boards. • Re-pin other users’ photos (the equivalent of a retweet) • Launch a competition and invite users to post their best photos.
