About this webinar
Who is this webinar for?
Sales, technical pre-sales, support, SOs,
integrators, IoT platforms
Technical level: Intermediate
Format: 40 mins presentation + 15 mins
Q&A session
Speaker: Pavel Sodomka, CEO at Simple
Hardware
The biggest danger is, that it sounds trivial
Not trivial 1/2
Traditional temperature data loggers are totally dumb. They record temperature at
predefined intervals.
This does not make any sense with Sigfox.
The same way that your finger does not report temperature to the brain all the time
but only if you touch something cold, the same way Sigfox sensors must be smart
and report only when the information is relevant/changes.
This saves immensely on battery life, tariff and data processing.
And trivial it is not 2/2
WHY, WHAT, WHERE, HOW, HOW MUCH, WHEN, FOR HOW LONG
● What substance to measure
● Accuracy, resolution, drift, range
● Reaction time
● IP Rating and temperature operating range
● Measurement interval
● Reporting triggers
● Redundancy/pipeline
● Logging
● Other sensors/functionality
● Certification, calibrations
● Mounting/unmounting
● Battery life of 1.8 million messages ?
WHY
Please always start with as much detailed description of the use case…
It seems obvious but it is not.
You want to?
● save cost
● decrease losses
● meet regulation
● add additional services
● increase customer satisfaction
● improve reliability
● automate
DATA
Please describe the current and future processes
How will the data flow be, which workflow/triggers?
What analytics?
Any visualizations/dashboards needed?
Processes connected to ERP and QC?
DEVICES MANAGEMENT
Which systems and processes will manage the devices ?
Device logistics (stock movements, stock keeping)
Device activation
Device mounting/unmounting/recycling
Device monitoring and statistics
Device maintenance/repair/replacement
Costs associated
WHAT and WHERE
Air temperature (what airflow)
Surface temperature
Liquid temperature
Please describe in as much detail as possible
Accuracy, resolution
Accuracy is the degree of conformity with the established standard; hence accuracy = zero
means the value corresponds exactly to the ideal value.
Resolution is the smallest value that can be reported. Depends on resolution of the ADC
converter and on the used encoding.
Sensors have different operating temperatures and different range where the measurement is
most precise.
Please give operating temperature plus range where the measurement must be most precise
and where accuracy and resolution are important
Response time
The response time is the time required by the sensor, after a thermal change , to detect a part of this change,
that is of this variation. This part is expressed with a percentage of the jump and is generally 90%: this is why
it is called T90. Sometimes, other percentages are taken into consideration, such as 50%, and we talk about
T50. So if the temperature changes from 0°C to 10°C response time 5 minutes at T90 means the reported
temperature after 5 minutes will be 9°C.
Typical response time at T90 required by HACCP is 20 mins.
Response time depends on the response time of the sensor itself and its enclosures. For externally mounted
sensors it can be in seconds.
This is critical to decide as this leads to decision whether to use inside sensor (in most cases cheaper) or
external sensor.
IP rating and temperature range
Which environment the device will be used in.
● Indoor room temperature
● Outdoor shielded from rain
● Outdoor not shielded
● Very humid with condensation
IP68 means working submerged under water for prolonged period of time and resistant to any humidity
ingression
SimplePack is IP68 rated with operating temperature from -40°C to 60°C
SimpleMeter is suited for indoor or outdoor usage shielded from direct rain and from -55°C to 85°C
SimpleIndustry is IP68 rated and is suited for operating temperature from -55°C to 85°C
SimpleIndustry Hot is IP68 and suited for operating temperature up to 125°C
Measurement interval
It is critical to understand distinction between measurement of temperature and
reporting it
In API6 you can set up measurement interval of temperature between 1 second and
128 days.
Default is 3 minutes
So in a smart device you measure/sample each 3 minutes or 30 seconds and if
change happens the reporting can be triggered immediately
In dumb device you get information about the change after 15 minutes.
Temperature reporting
There are several options:
1. The dumbest is to measure at regular time intervals. They can be set by API6 to anything between 1 sec
and 128 days and you can have 3 different timers
2. The normal is to report on temperature change (delta) when you setup the step at which the
temperature is reported. Can be setup in API6
3. Temperature thresholds (boundary)
You can setup 3 bands and its width and by getting out of this bands the event is reported. (used by
default in SimpleLeak to report danger of freezing, danger of abnormal temperature (45°C) and fire (60°
C). Freely configurable in API6
Other temperature reporting events can be setup (light, reed switch, button, change of orientation, geozoning
etc.)
Redundancy/pipeline
When objects are moving it can happen that they get out of Sigfox coverage. And you
still want to know what was happening.
In this case we use Redundancy/pipeline mode in API6 when we send five last
measurements together with timestamps in order that even you lose 4 messages you
are able to reconstruct them all
Permanent device data logging
In SimplePack 3.0 Plus Advanced Edition we can keep precise world clock and log
300 000 measurements if absolutely needed. Data can be retrieved by a downlink
request or physically in case of legal dispute. Over the air local data downlink is in
preparation.
Other sensors/functionality
SimplePacks and SimpleIndustry support many sensors that can be combined
The typical one is combining temperature measurement with WiFi global tracking.
Other possible sensors are impact, tilt, orientation, reed switch, light ingression,
external switch, barometer, gyroscope.
In Advanced Edition we have smart sensors supporting machine learning and pattern
mapping. E.g. if you know the pattern of a malfunctioning compressor you can teach
the device to recognize it and report appropriate event for both preventive
maintenance and/or informed repair.
Certification
It is important to know what norms are must have and what are nice to have
They fall into 2 broad categories:
Technical (that really describe precision etc.)
E.g. EN 12830:2018
Procedural (that just describe definition of processes)
HACCP
EN ISO 13485:2001
Calibration and certification
Internal sensors come mostly precalibrated from the factory
External sensors can be calibrated by the manufacturing company
In a batch
Individually (costs around 50 Euros per individual device)
Externally in a lab (costs ? Euro per individual device)
Mounting of devices
All devices can be mounted by
● Duct tape (brutal but very cheap, fast and
reliable especially overwrapping the pipes)
● Removable heavy duty double sided tape
● Permanent industrial UVB 3M
● Holders/sleeves
SimpleMeter additionally by internal wall screws
SimpleIndustry additionally by horizontal and
vertical screw fixtures or magnetic fixture
Battery longevity
The temperature measurement itself takes negligible energy so the main factor is
number of reporting messages
SimplePack 3.0 Plus - 30 000 messages
SimpleMeter and SimpleIndustry - 100 000 messages
Using API6 you can use only 1 frame with good coverage or even lower the output
achieving triple the number of messages
In RC1/RC3 with good coverage you can also switch to 600bps transmission and get
1 800 000 messages out of SimpleIndustry
Replaceable battery environmental impact
10 years
vs.
Cost: SimpleHW in device price
Competition: ?
RF performance
All devices class 0, fully supporting multi-zone manual, downlink, timed or Monarch
radio zone switching
For RC1 and RC3 you can enable in API6 Power amplifier and if the devices are
embedded into another object (such as a fridge or manhole) you can emit up to
22dBmi and be compliant/certify the whole final object

Webinar: Is your cheese at the correct temperature?

  • 1.
  • 2. About this webinar Who is this webinar for? Sales, technical pre-sales, support, SOs, integrators, IoT platforms Technical level: Intermediate Format: 40 mins presentation + 15 mins Q&A session Speaker: Pavel Sodomka, CEO at Simple Hardware
  • 3. The biggest danger is, that it sounds trivial
  • 4. Not trivial 1/2 Traditional temperature data loggers are totally dumb. They record temperature at predefined intervals. This does not make any sense with Sigfox. The same way that your finger does not report temperature to the brain all the time but only if you touch something cold, the same way Sigfox sensors must be smart and report only when the information is relevant/changes. This saves immensely on battery life, tariff and data processing.
  • 5. And trivial it is not 2/2 WHY, WHAT, WHERE, HOW, HOW MUCH, WHEN, FOR HOW LONG ● What substance to measure ● Accuracy, resolution, drift, range ● Reaction time ● IP Rating and temperature operating range ● Measurement interval ● Reporting triggers ● Redundancy/pipeline ● Logging ● Other sensors/functionality ● Certification, calibrations ● Mounting/unmounting ● Battery life of 1.8 million messages ?
  • 6. WHY Please always start with as much detailed description of the use case… It seems obvious but it is not. You want to? ● save cost ● decrease losses ● meet regulation ● add additional services ● increase customer satisfaction ● improve reliability ● automate
  • 7. DATA Please describe the current and future processes How will the data flow be, which workflow/triggers? What analytics? Any visualizations/dashboards needed? Processes connected to ERP and QC?
  • 8. DEVICES MANAGEMENT Which systems and processes will manage the devices ? Device logistics (stock movements, stock keeping) Device activation Device mounting/unmounting/recycling Device monitoring and statistics Device maintenance/repair/replacement Costs associated
  • 9. WHAT and WHERE Air temperature (what airflow) Surface temperature Liquid temperature Please describe in as much detail as possible
  • 10. Accuracy, resolution Accuracy is the degree of conformity with the established standard; hence accuracy = zero means the value corresponds exactly to the ideal value. Resolution is the smallest value that can be reported. Depends on resolution of the ADC converter and on the used encoding. Sensors have different operating temperatures and different range where the measurement is most precise. Please give operating temperature plus range where the measurement must be most precise and where accuracy and resolution are important
  • 11. Response time The response time is the time required by the sensor, after a thermal change , to detect a part of this change, that is of this variation. This part is expressed with a percentage of the jump and is generally 90%: this is why it is called T90. Sometimes, other percentages are taken into consideration, such as 50%, and we talk about T50. So if the temperature changes from 0°C to 10°C response time 5 minutes at T90 means the reported temperature after 5 minutes will be 9°C. Typical response time at T90 required by HACCP is 20 mins. Response time depends on the response time of the sensor itself and its enclosures. For externally mounted sensors it can be in seconds. This is critical to decide as this leads to decision whether to use inside sensor (in most cases cheaper) or external sensor.
  • 12. IP rating and temperature range Which environment the device will be used in. ● Indoor room temperature ● Outdoor shielded from rain ● Outdoor not shielded ● Very humid with condensation IP68 means working submerged under water for prolonged period of time and resistant to any humidity ingression SimplePack is IP68 rated with operating temperature from -40°C to 60°C SimpleMeter is suited for indoor or outdoor usage shielded from direct rain and from -55°C to 85°C SimpleIndustry is IP68 rated and is suited for operating temperature from -55°C to 85°C SimpleIndustry Hot is IP68 and suited for operating temperature up to 125°C
  • 13. Measurement interval It is critical to understand distinction between measurement of temperature and reporting it In API6 you can set up measurement interval of temperature between 1 second and 128 days. Default is 3 minutes So in a smart device you measure/sample each 3 minutes or 30 seconds and if change happens the reporting can be triggered immediately In dumb device you get information about the change after 15 minutes.
  • 14. Temperature reporting There are several options: 1. The dumbest is to measure at regular time intervals. They can be set by API6 to anything between 1 sec and 128 days and you can have 3 different timers 2. The normal is to report on temperature change (delta) when you setup the step at which the temperature is reported. Can be setup in API6 3. Temperature thresholds (boundary) You can setup 3 bands and its width and by getting out of this bands the event is reported. (used by default in SimpleLeak to report danger of freezing, danger of abnormal temperature (45°C) and fire (60° C). Freely configurable in API6 Other temperature reporting events can be setup (light, reed switch, button, change of orientation, geozoning etc.)
  • 15. Redundancy/pipeline When objects are moving it can happen that they get out of Sigfox coverage. And you still want to know what was happening. In this case we use Redundancy/pipeline mode in API6 when we send five last measurements together with timestamps in order that even you lose 4 messages you are able to reconstruct them all
  • 16. Permanent device data logging In SimplePack 3.0 Plus Advanced Edition we can keep precise world clock and log 300 000 measurements if absolutely needed. Data can be retrieved by a downlink request or physically in case of legal dispute. Over the air local data downlink is in preparation.
  • 17. Other sensors/functionality SimplePacks and SimpleIndustry support many sensors that can be combined The typical one is combining temperature measurement with WiFi global tracking. Other possible sensors are impact, tilt, orientation, reed switch, light ingression, external switch, barometer, gyroscope. In Advanced Edition we have smart sensors supporting machine learning and pattern mapping. E.g. if you know the pattern of a malfunctioning compressor you can teach the device to recognize it and report appropriate event for both preventive maintenance and/or informed repair.
  • 18. Certification It is important to know what norms are must have and what are nice to have They fall into 2 broad categories: Technical (that really describe precision etc.) E.g. EN 12830:2018 Procedural (that just describe definition of processes) HACCP EN ISO 13485:2001
  • 19. Calibration and certification Internal sensors come mostly precalibrated from the factory External sensors can be calibrated by the manufacturing company In a batch Individually (costs around 50 Euros per individual device) Externally in a lab (costs ? Euro per individual device)
  • 20. Mounting of devices All devices can be mounted by ● Duct tape (brutal but very cheap, fast and reliable especially overwrapping the pipes) ● Removable heavy duty double sided tape ● Permanent industrial UVB 3M ● Holders/sleeves SimpleMeter additionally by internal wall screws SimpleIndustry additionally by horizontal and vertical screw fixtures or magnetic fixture
  • 21. Battery longevity The temperature measurement itself takes negligible energy so the main factor is number of reporting messages SimplePack 3.0 Plus - 30 000 messages SimpleMeter and SimpleIndustry - 100 000 messages Using API6 you can use only 1 frame with good coverage or even lower the output achieving triple the number of messages In RC1/RC3 with good coverage you can also switch to 600bps transmission and get 1 800 000 messages out of SimpleIndustry
  • 22. Replaceable battery environmental impact 10 years vs. Cost: SimpleHW in device price Competition: ?
  • 23. RF performance All devices class 0, fully supporting multi-zone manual, downlink, timed or Monarch radio zone switching For RC1 and RC3 you can enable in API6 Power amplifier and if the devices are embedded into another object (such as a fridge or manhole) you can emit up to 22dBmi and be compliant/certify the whole final object
