A MESSAGE OF
GRATITUDE FROM
KEVIN R. WEST
from Brian Edey, my boss at summer camp for
eight years who sadly passed away this summer.
Before starting SkyLaw, I travelled to Ottawa to
meet with Justice Binnie in his chambers at the
Supreme Court of Canada to discuss my ideas
(“Change the Profession!” he encouraged). I have
had the privilege of working with some of the top
lawyers in the world at Sullivan & Cromwell and
Davies and I am lucky to still have many of them
as colleagues and friends.
And a special thank you to Andrea Hill, who is
among the smartest, hardest-working and
genuinely compassionate lawyers you will ever
meet, Estahil Aden, who has transformed and
grown our corporate services practice over the
past four years, and Jen Semple-Berger who joined
me over eight years ago and has fashioned SkyLaw
into what it is today.
We have had a lot of fun over the past decade and
we can’t wait to see what the next ten years will
bring!

Ten years ago, I had the good fortune of being in a
position where I could start my own law firm. I
had no idea back in October 2010 that SkyLaw
would become what it is today. Our success is
thanks to the many amazing people who have
joined me on this journey.
Everyone on the SkyLaw team has shared their
thoughts and contributed to this newsletter. We
are very proud of our team and the contributions
that have been made over the years. In particular,
we owe a debt of gratitude to Michael Lee, Andrew
Cooley and Lisa Silver Slayter who have gone on to
do amazing things all around the globe (London,
Australia and Cambodia, respectively) and leave
with us a legacy of excellence (and gold-standard
precedents).
I am also grateful for the many mentors I have
had over the years. I was inspired from the start
by Gary Barnes, who provided me with a co-op
placement at his criminal law firm in Grade 13. I
learned so much about leadership and teamwork
