- Waterford has 100 km of coastline, with at least 30 bathing areas, 18 main monitored and managed areas, 6 nationally designated, 5 blue flags, 6 green coast beaches, 11 classified as excellent, 2 good, 3 sufficient and 2 poor
- Main pressures on bathing water quality all made worse by heavy rainfall
- Chlorination of the village wastewater overflow discharge during the bathing season. Pumps and text alerts triggered by water level indicator. The dosing set up is fixed dosing of 14% hypochlorite from 25 litres drums. Dosage was initially set as 8 mg/l but this was increased to 16 mg/l based on before and after testing. At 16 mg/l there appears to be good reduction in E coli counts from 12 million to 1500 per 100 mls – a 99% reduction. Some breakdon issues occurred during 2014 and the dosage may not be sufficient to achieve bacterial reduction during higher wastewater flows during wet weather.
