5. History
 IUBAT- International University of Business Agriculture and
Technology is the first non-government university established
in Bangladesh & the initial planning began in 1989 and the
university was established in 1991
 IUBAT operates as a government approved university under
the non-government university Act of 1992 and 1998
 IUBAT curriculums have been approved by the University
Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and vetted by
cooperating universities abroad

The overall mission of IUBAT is human resources development through:
1. Appropriate teaching

3. Appropriate guidance
As well as creation of knowledge conducive to socio-agro-economic
development of developing societies in general and that of Bangladesh in
particular.
This overall vision is being attained through offering courses and curricula
relating to various aspects of knowledge.
As well as providing opportunities for individuals to acquire skill and
relevant experience in the chosen field of specialization.

7. INTRODUCTION

Dairy is one of the major components of animal agriculture and part of
mixed farming system in Bangladesh.
It accounts for about 14.08% (DLS 2013) of agricultural
GDP and contributes to the livelihoods of many small scale
farmers through income.
The annual national milk demand is 14.02 million tones
However, at present the country is producing only 6.09 million
tones which is only 43.5% of the milk demand.

In Bangladesh Dairy production is very important sector for food
security of an increasing population and elevation of income growth.
Milk production fulfilling a great variety of function, which
are- provides human food, nutrition, clothing and fertilizers.
Generates employment opportunity for landless and
marginal farmers as well as women.

10. LIMITATION
I. Some well reputed organization like as Milk Vita, Aarong,
Pran they don’t allow me for visiting the dairy farm.
II. Time limitation is also a problem to conduct such kind of
survey.
III. It is also not possible to collect the data from all over the
Bangladesh Dairy farm in a short time.
IV. It was difficult to communicate with the Officials, as many
of them were very hesitate to response.

11. History of dairy industry in Bangladesh
 Milk selling and purchasing in the East Bengal (present Bangladesh)
started after the Ghosh had come here.
 They migrated from parts of India to East Bengal at the middle of
17th century.
 Gosh is a tribe who by tradition buy milk from the farmers and sell
the commodities as fresh milk sweetmeat, chhana, whey, curd, cream
and ghee (butter oil) to the city consumers
 In 1830, the Ghosh of Chittagong used to market milk and milk
products for Chittagong Metropolitan areas.
 Milk Vita was established in 1974 at Baghabarighat at Sirajgonj
district.
 Up until the early 1990s, BMPCUL used to be the only formal sector
that processed and marketed milk from the producers of Bangladesh.

 Mahmud Enterprise has started in 2006 & over the years
Mahmud Enterprise has established itself under the dynamic
leadership of Mr. Al Mahmud as Chairman.

established Polasi Dairy farm
 During this period, additional schemes on Mahmud Enterprise
were launched and those projects focused more sharply on
increasing responsiveness to client needs.

 At the starting time he was a timber
businessman. But his friend has a Dairy
farm.
 First time he was related with his

interest to build a farm.

on Dairy and start journey on this
sector.

the Abdul Haque Dairy Farm.
 He passed more than 10 years of
his life in abroad. He returns BD on
2008.
 He saw many Dairy Farms during
his Foreign life and observed that
Dairy Farm is more profitable than
other local business.
 So he decides to establish a Dairy
Farm while he came back in BD.
 So for fulfilling his wish of
establishing a Dairy farm first he
started the farm with a little
quantity of cattle.

36.  Dairy cattle improvement program in Bangladesh was started in
1958 by DLS with artificial insemination program which was
strengthened in 1975-76
 The dairy cattle improvement project was undertaken as an annual
development project on AI for 5 years and after the completion of
the project period, required attention was not given to follow the
next steps until a new AI project was initiated
 Many private and cooperative enterprises and NGO’s are working
for development of livestock resources since long time following
the government initiated breeding policy.
 Government also encourages the private sectors and entrepreneurs
to take part in the development process of livestock sector of the
country.

39. Recommendation
 Private sectors should be given priority on dairy production with
low interest bank loans (1-3%), encouraging public and private
sector partnerships and investments, strengthening cooperation
between private organizations, NGOs with government sector.
 Development of high yielding dairy breed through genetic
improvement.
 Increased feed and fodder production. It may be partially overcome
by introducing HYV fodder cultivation.
 Veterinary care and services to the farm owners should be
strengthened.

40.  The price of milk should be fixed at a reasonable level and milk
marketing system should be improved through the intervention
by the government.
 Milk preservation facilities should be created for the farmer to
ensure the marketing of their product.
 Improvements should be made to communication, power, water
supply and modern storage facilities for dairy products.
 Dairy products branding, labeling and advertising should be
introduced.
 Powdered milk imports should be reduced to encourage dairying
in Bangladesh. National Milk Development Co-operation should
be established.

41.  The need for government intervention in the
industry is highlighted and finally, government
programs for the industry, are discussed using a
normative, market failure approach.
 Except for a few commercialized dairy farms in the
urban areas, there still exists vast scope for
improving the lot of the country’s rural folk by
commercializing the dairy enterprise.
 The economic aspects of milk production through
indigenous and cross-bred animals still remain
relatively unexplored. For the success of any dairy
developmental program, therefore, it is essential to
fill such gaps in economic information.

42.  30% increase in cattle production would be possible if
diseases were properly controlled. The vaccination program is
limited because of budgetary constraints and the veterinary
medical facilities are poor at district and sub-district level
livestock offices.
 Institutional support for expansion of milk supplies for rural
areas, covering issues relating to the animal health,
improvement in breeding, extension services, and feed and
drugs supplies is essential.
