BACKGROUND OF SULA VINEYARD AND BEYOND
• SULA VINEYARD was named after Rajeev’s mother – 'Sulabha'.
• Rajeev Samant initially experimented with crops such as mangoes, roses, teakwood
and table grapes before realising that Nashik’s climate and temperature were well-
suited for growing wine grapes.
• Samant steadily expanded the company over the next few years by introducing newer
grape varieties and expanding the company’s offerings.
• Today, the Nashik region is known as the 'Wine Capital of India' and is home to almost
50 wineries.
• SULA BEYOND – India’s first vineyard resort.
• The resort has beautiful wine themed rooms, named after different grape varietals or
Sula’s wines.
• As part of their wine tourism venture, Sula operates a tasting room, 2 restaurants:
'Little Italy' & 'Soma',a 35-room resort: ‘Beyond by Sula,’ and an amphitheatre at their

MERITS OF THE RESORT –
• The use of negative spaces throughout the resort was efficient.
• The central courtyard improves the micro-climate and cools the surrounding
rooms through evaporative cooling.
• Each room provides a comforting view of either the hill or the lake.
• The roofing material (puff-insulated sheets) provided comfort from outside
weather.
• The staircase was provided from the kitchen for service to the rooms on upper
floor.
• Skylights provided for efficient lighting in the corridors and for the plants to grow
properly.
• Every block of vineyard and resort was connected by some GREEN element.
• Every year, in the month of Jan – Feb, SULA FEST is held.
• Through WINE TOURING AND TASTING, people are enlightened by not only the
process of wine making but also the advantages of its consumption.
DEMERITS OF THE RESORT –
• The villas provided were very far from the resort building and there was no provision
for cooking in the villas so people had to come to the Café Rose. This was not
convenient.
• There was no in-house laundry provided.
• The capacity of the whole resort is only 70-80 people that is not sufficient. People have
to do their bookings 2 months prior.
• During the Sula Fest, there is no vacancy in the resort as it is given to the bands who
perform at the fest.
SITE ANALYSIS
• SITE – PUNE, MAHARASHTRA.
• LOCATION – Hadapsar, near gliding centre, Pune.
WHY PUNE ?
• Climate – For wine production, the temperature required for it should be between
20-30 degree Celsius. Pune has favourable weather conditions needed for the
same.
The city has hot semi-arid climate with tropical wet and dry, average temperature
ranging between 19-33 degree Celsius.
• Maximum Production – Also, though as compared to Nasik, there are less wineries
but production of it is still at a great percentage. In 2008, there was an article, in
TOI as, “ Pune hot spot for wine production” describing the demand for wine from
local as well as international market growing. Pune district is becoming the hot-
spot for wine production.
• Demand – Despite of great demand for wine in Pune, there is no vineyard resort.
Pune being the educational centre and one of the leading district for wine
production could be favourable for a vineyard.
• National Research centre for Grapes – Pune has grape research centre in Hadapsar.
That is 6.1 km away from gliding centre.
