SHAPE AND SIZE
-THE SIZE SHOULD BE FIXED IN RELATION TO THE NUMBER OF AUDIENCE REQUIRED TO
BE SEATED.THE FLOOR AREA OF THE HALL INCLUDING, GANGWAYS(EXCLUDING THE
STAGE)SHOULD BE CALCULATED ON THE BASIS OF 0.6 TO 0.9 sqm. PER PERSON. THE
HEIGHT OF THE HALL IS DETERMINED BY SUCH CONSIDERATIONS AS VENTILATION,
PRESENCE (OR ABSENCE)OF BALKONY AND THE TYPE OF PERFORMANCE.
-FLOOR PLAN OF VARIOUS SHAPES ARE USED, BUT THE ONE WHICH IS CONSIDERED TO
GIVE SATISFACTORY RESULTS WITHOUT INTRODUCING COMPLICATIONS IN THE
ACOUSTICAL TREATMENT OF THE HALL IS THE FAN-SHAPED PLAN. THE PROSCENIUM
MAY BEAR ANY SUITABLE RATIO WITH THE HEIGHT OF THE HALL TO SUIT STAGE
REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS OF VIAIBILITY.THE SIDE WALLS SHOULD BE
ARRANGED TO HAVE AN ANGLE OF NOT MORE THAN 100 DEGREES WITH THE CURTAIN
LINE. IN THE CASE OF TALKING PICTURES
SYNCHRONISATION OF SOUND WITP A LIP MOVEMENT IS MOST ESSENTIAL.ALSO, IN THE
CASE OF THEATRES A PERSON WITH NORMAL VISION SHOULD BE ABLE TO DISCERN
FACIALE EXPRESSIONS OF THE PERFORMERS. IN ORDER TO SATISFY THESE
CONDITIONS,IT IS
RECOMMENDED THAT THE DISTANCE OF THE FARTHEST SEAT FROM THE CURTAIN LINE
SHOULD NOT NORMALLY EXCEED 24M.
-THE AUDITORIUM REAR WALLS SHOULD BE EITHER FLAT OR CONVEX IN SHAPE,AND IN SHAH
AUDITORIUM IT WAS CONVEX.
-SIDE WALLS ARE NON-PARALLEL AS IN THE CASE OF A FAN-SHAPED HALL.THE WALLS MAY
REMAIN REFLECTIVE AND MAY BE ARCHITECTURALLY FINISHED. IN ANY MANNER REQUIRED, IF
SOUND ABSORBING MATERIAL IS NOT REQUIRED FROM OTHER CONSIDERATIONS.
SHAH AUDITORIUM IS RECTANGULAR IN SHAPE AND HAVE PARALLEL WALLS IN IT.
-A SUITABLE SOUNDPROOF FALSE CEILING SHOULD BE PROVIDED BELOW THE ROOF TO AVOID
THE NOISE FROM THE AIRCRAFTS AND RAIN .THERE WERE NO FALSE CEILING PROVIDED IN THE
SHAH AUDITORIUM.
-FOYER CRUSH HALL ,ATTACHED ROOM, ALL THE ENCLOSED SPACES, SUCH AS FOYERS.
LOUNGES,FLANKING VERANDAHS. ETC,ADJACENT TO THE AUDITRIUM SHOULD BE ISOLATED
FROM THE MAIN HALL BY SUITABLE (WELL FITTING)DOORS THAT THE ACOUSTICS OF THE
HALL ARE NOT INFLUENCED BY THESE ROOMS; HEAVY CURTAINS MAY BE USED TO AID
ABSORPTION OF EXTERNAL NOISE FROM FOYER. VERANDAHS, ETC.
-THE FOYER AREA,NUMBER AND SIZE OF ENTRANCES ALSO DEPEND ON THE SIZE AND SEATING
CAPACITY OF THE AUDITORIUM. AT LEAST 20 PERCENT OF THE SEATING AREA OF THE HALL IS
RECOMMENDED FOR FOYER.

– ALL THE PARTS OF THE PREMISES OPEN TO THE PUBLIC SHALL BE MADE OF FIRE RESISTING
MATERIALS OF ATLEAST HALF HOUR RESISTANCE. NO WOODEN POSTS SHALL BE ALLOWED
FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE GALLERIES OR TIERS UNLESS TREATED WITH FIRE RETARDANT
SOLUTIONS OR COATED WITH FIRE RESISTANT /RETARDANT. NO SOFT WOOD OR OTHER
INFLAMMABLE WALL LIMITING PARTITIONS, SCREENS OR BARRIERS SHALL BE USED IN ANY

ENTRANCE
– THE PREMISES SHALL HAVE A ROAD FRONTAGE FOR THE PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE AND IN
SUCH FRONTAGE THERE SHALL BE SUITABLE MEANS OF ENTRANCE AND EXIT FOR THE
PUBLIC. IN ADDITION, ENTRANCES AND EXITS SHALL BE RESERVED FOR SERVICE IN CASE OF
EMERGENCY.
EXITS
– THERE SHALL BE AT LEAST ONE EXIT FROM EVERY TIER, FLOOR OR GALLERY FOR EVERY 150
PERSONS , PROVIDED THAT FROM EVERY UPPER FLOOR OR GALLERY THERE SHALL NOT BE
LESS THAN TWO EXITS . PROVIDED FURTHER THAT AN EXIT BY WAY OF A STAGE OR PLATFORM
SHALL NOT BE RECKONED AS ONE OF THE EXITS.EVERY EXIT FROM AN AUDITORIUM SHALL
PROVIDE A CLEAR OPENING SPACE OF NOT LESS THAN 2.1 MTS HIGH AND 1.5 MTS WIDE. .EXITS
SHOULD BE SUITABLY PLACED ALONG BOTH SIDES AND SHALL DELIVER INTO TWO OR MORE
DIFFERENT THOROUGH FARES OR OPEN SPACE AND SHALL AT ALL TIMES PROVIDE FREE
MEANS OF DISPERSAL. EVERY PASSAGE OR CORRIDOR LEADING FROM AN EXIT TO A FINAL
PLACE OF EXIT SHALL AT NO POINT BE LESSER THAN 1.50MTS AND IT SHALL NOT DIMINISH IN

SCALE HIGHER THAN 0.45SQMTS PER PERSON. THE MAXIMUM GROSS OCCUPANT LOAD SHALL BE 0.

SEATING
–THE SEATING SHALL BE SO ARRANGED THAT THERE IS FREE ACCESS TO EXITS. THE ROWS OF THE SEATS
SHALL BE SO ARRANGED THAT THERE IS CLEAR SPACE OF NOT LESS THAN 38CMS BETWEEN THE BACK
OF ONE SEAT AND THE FOREMOST PORTION OF THE SEAT ARM OF FRAME BEHIND, MEASURED
BETWEEN PERPENDICULARS. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BACK OF ONE ROW OF SEATS TO THE BACK
OF ANOTHER ROW OF SEATS IMMEDIATELY BEHIND SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN 90 CMS AND 98 CMS

TO SUBSIDISE AND PROMOTE ASPIRING AND DESERVING STAGE ARTISTS, TECHNICIANS,
RESEARCHERS ETC.

THE PRITHVI THEATRE IS A COMPLETELY NON-PROFIT ENTITY DEPENDING ON THE
PATRONAGE OF INDIVIDUALS AND CORPORATES COMMITTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE
PERFORMING AND FINE ARTS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IT IS THESE PATRONS WHO HAVE
ENABLED THE THEATRE TO GROW AND EXPAND ITS ACTIVITIES.

THE BUILDING HOUSES A SINGLE THEATRE, ALONG WITH A 200 SEATER
AUDITORIUM
THE SHAPE OF THE AUDITORIUM IS FAN-SHAPED WHICH IS IDEAL FOR MAXIMUM
SOUND INTELLIGIBILITY EVEN TO THE PEOPLE SITTING AT THE VERY END.
THE SHAPE ALSO HELPS IS CUTING DOWN THE UNWANTED NOISE SO AS TO GIVE

VERANDAHS, ETC. -THE FOYER AREA,NUMBER AND SIZE OF ENTRANCES ALSO DEPEND ON THE SIZE AND SEATING CAPACITY OF THE AUDITORIUM. NO WOODEN POSTS SHALL BE ALLOWED FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE GALLERIES OR TIERS UNLESS TREATED WITH FIRE RETARDANT SOLUTIONS OR COATED WITH FIRE RESISTANT /RETARDANT. IN ADDITION, ENTRANCES AND EXITS SHALL BE RESERVED FOR SERVICE IN CASE OF EMERGENCY. EXITS – THERE SHALL BE AT LEAST ONE EXIT FROM EVERY TIER, FLOOR OR GALLERY FOR EVERY 150 PERSONS , PROVIDED THAT FROM EVERY UPPER FLOOR OR GALLERY THERE SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN TWO EXITS . THE MAXIMUM GROSS OCCUPANT LOAD SHALL BE 0. 60 SQ.M OF THE OVERALL AREA OF THE FLOOR SPACE IN THE AUDITORIUM, PER PERSON. SEATING –THE SEATING SHALL BE SO ARRANGED THAT THERE IS FREE ACCESS TO EXITS. THE ROWS OF THE SEATS SHALL BE SO ARRANGED THAT THERE IS CLEAR SPACE OF NOT LESS THAN 38CMS BETWEEN THE BACK OF ONE SEAT AND THE FOREMOST PORTION OF THE SEAT ARM OF FRAME BEHIND, MEASURED BETWEEN PERPENDICULARS. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BACK OF ONE ROW OF SEATS TO THE BACK OF ANOTHER ROW OF SEATS IMMEDIATELY BEHIND SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN 90 CMS AND 98 CMS WHERE FIXED SEATS ARE USED.
