6. Aurizon (ASX: AZJ) is Australia’s largest rail freight operator and a
top 50 ASX company. Aurizon transports more than 250 million
tonnes of Australian commodities annually. The company provides
freight solutions across an extensive national rail and road network,
Australia-wide.
THE CHALLENGE
The Wiggins Island Rail
Project (WIRP) involved staged
development of new rail lines
and upgrading of existing lines
to serve the Wiggins Island
Coal Export Terminal (WICET)
at the Port of Gladstone. At the
cost of more than $900 million,
the WIRP created a vital link
between mines in the southern
Bowen and Surat Basins and
the coal terminal.
Aurizon established a core
leadership team of seven
to work on WIRP. However,
some of the team members
were newly promoted or not
experienced in working on
such a major project. The
WIRP was pivotal to Aurizon,
and they were committed
to ensuring their leaders
had adequate support and
development to handle any
challenges.

platforms. Headquartered in Washington, in the USA, the company
is more than 50-years-old. The company is well-regarded as an
upholder of stringent quality standards and reliability. Genie Terex
Company has had a base in Brisbane to service Australia and New
Zealand for more than 20 years.
THE CHALLENGE
In the face of leadership and
internal reconfiguration, the
CFO of Genie in Australia was
appointed the company’s new
general manager of Australia
and New Zealand. His shift
from the business’s financial
aspect to the demanding
and holistic leadership role
of the general manager was
challenging. The new general
manager was faced with the
task of becoming a strong and
empathetic leader in a finite
amount of time. He was also
building up the executive
team’s capability to support
the company’s growth.
