Georgia State Celebrates International Education Week

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) November 09, 2012

Georgia State University will celebrate International Education Week Nov. 12-16 with more than
30 events highlighting the benefits of international education.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S.
Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment
and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United
States.

“International Education Week is a great occasion to meet the strategic plan goal of globalizing
the university, said Jun Liu, associate provost for International Initiatives at Georgia State. Not
only is International Education Week a nationally recognized weeklong celebration, but it is an
opportunity to bring the entire campus and local communities together to celebrate and raise the
visibility of our international initiatives.”

New to International Education Week this year are five public forums sponsored by Georgia
State’s five emerging-market task forces. The task forces, which were created in 2011 to help
guide Georgia State in its international endeavors, focus on Turkey, South Africa, China, South
Korea and Brazil.

More than 100 faculty volunteered to serve on these task forces, Liu said. We hope that new
ideas, peaked interests and meaningful relationships will stem from these dialogues.

Kim Reimann, chair of the Korea Task Force and director of Georgia State’s Asian Studies
Center, said the Korea task force public forum will offer perspectives on Korean politics,
business, education opportunities and pop culture. The forum will be held at noon, Thursday,
Nov. 15 in the Student Center Speakers Auditorium.

                                                                                             1/3
As a leading force in high tech in Asia and globally, Korea is an exciting and inspiring country
that has gained international attention over the past decade and most recently with the viral
spread of Gangnam style, Reimann said.

The Center for Collaborative and International Arts will host a week-long look at the conflict in
Sarajevo, Bosnia. The week will culminate with the first U.S. screening of the film “The Tunnel:
The Secret of the Siege of Sarajevo” by Nedim Loncarevic at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 15 in the
Speakers Auditorium. The film tells the story of the secret underground tunnel the citizens of the
city of Sarajevo dug out to escape the four-year- long siege during the Bosnian war.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the Bosnian war and the siege of Sarajevo.
Even though so many years have passed, the memories of the war and legacies of violence
continue to plague the region, said Jelena Subotic, assistant professor of political science. As
we remember the plight of the people of Bosnia, we remind ourselves that violence and war are
never inevitable. There are always other options available for solving political conflict. If nothing
else, this should be the lesson of Bosnia.

In 2012, 1,654 international students attended Georgia State and 755 students studied abroad
in 39 countries.

Many of those students will share their experiences during events such as the Study Abroad
Panel at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13 in the Golden Key Room of the Student Center and the
annual Crossing Paths, Crossing Cultures photo competition and reception on Thursday, Nov.
15 at 5 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. International Student and Scholar Services will
co-host a Thanksgiving Feast at noon on Friday, Nov. 16 at the Rialto.
