1. During my time at Domus Inc. I feel I was given a great opportunity to see firsthand
what the Public Relations industry is about. Within the first week I was sitting in on conference
calls and attending meetings with Fortune 500 companies that Domus represented. I was also
given an abundance of task so I would understand what it is like to manage multiple clients at
the same time. Coming in I was welcomed by the Domus employees and right away I noticed
the family like atmosphere that I knew I could thrive in. I learned many lessons during my
internship that I feel will separate me from other graduates entering the world of public
relations.
For one, I learned how important time management is when working in this industry.
You are responsible for multiple clients with many coinciding dates and tasks. At one point I had
projects being assigned with an “End of Day” deadline, along with previous assigned projects
due at the same time. Juggling task is the norm in this industry and it was great to experience
this first hand because it is not as common for students without job experience.
Another value that I have adopted while interning at Domus is that “presentation is
Key”. When representing a client everything must be detailed to a “T”. In the industry you may
only have one oppotunity to make an impression upon future clients, so whether it’s compiling
a spreadsheet, tracking competitive news, or media pitching, make sure it is meticulous and
presentable.
I feel one of the most important value I adopted while interning at Domus was the
importance of evolving your weaknesses into strengths. Having no experience, I was not used
to the environment in which I was immersed in. I had the opportunity of meeting with my
supervisor, every week to discuss my progress within the industry. The public relations fields is
very demanding and to succeed in it you must constantly improve your skillset. Since beginning
my intern I have further developed my skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Cision, research, ,
media pitching, press releases, and familiarizing myself with various social media portals.
All in all, I feel I got a great experience while interning at Domus Inc. The atmosphere
was friendly, and the people were resourceful. I definitely plan to take the skills I have
harnessed here and apply them to my next internship and in my career within public relations.
It gave me hands on experience within the public relations industry, and also gave me a heads
up on what employers look for in the interviewing process. I would recommend interning at
Domus to anyone who is serious about a career in public relations. You will come out learning
so much about the industry and will develop a skill set and an air of confidence that will
separate you from the rest of your peers competing for jobs.
