Personally, I don't know of anyone
who hasn't lied at some point in their
life. I have lied and, probably, so have
you.

3. Lies come in many forms and can be as
simple as a child refusing to take the blame
for taking the last cookie from the cookie
jar or a husband replying, “No, honey, it
looks just fine,” when his wife asks if that
dress makes her look fat. What husband in
his right mind would say
anything else? LOL!

4. All joking aside, there are many reasons
people lie and most are virtually harmless,
but some, well some are catastrophic and
criminal.
Some can be detrimental to a company’s
profits or reputation.

5. Is it possible to discern a lie of
someone who is talking to you? Yes,
in most cases. It depends on whether
or not that person has had training in
lie discernment.

6. In talking to people, I find a common
misconception regarding telling a lie. I
cannot tell you the number of times I
have heard someone tell me that they
can pick out a liar every time! I have
heard this so many times, I now know
what they are about to tell me.

7. Nine times out of ten, they will tell me
that if someone does not look them in
their eyes when they talk to them,
they are telling a lie. I hate to pop
anyone’s bubble, but they are
surprised when I tell them
they are wrong!

8. Using this one indicator is totally
unreliable and is not only not fair to
the person they may peg as a liar, but
it feeding them false information
about that person being a liar.
It is unfair to both of them!

9. In my seminar, How to Catch a Liar, I
go into detail why this indicator is
unreliable and should not be used as a
sole indicator. In fact, no indicator of
a lie should be used in a stand alone
fashion.

10. Police detectives know to look for
clusters of indicators, particularly in
the first five seconds of the answer.
Police detectives like to see clusters of
two, three, maybe four lying
indicators upon an answer given to
them after a question.

11. What are some of the common
indicators of lying?
(Understand, these are just a very few indicators. There are MANY more!)
Answering a question in an aggressive manner
Talking with a hand over one’s mouth
Base shifting
Physical/verbal disconnects
Repeating the question in the answer
Looking away after answering, “No.”

12. Lie detection is more than body
language, it involves the actual
language used, inflections, and
conversational interaction.
It is a synergistic process.

13. Most people believe they are able to
discern a lie when it is told to them,
yet the statistics show otherwise. It
has been shown that someone who
has not received any training in lie
discernment can pick out a lie
approximately ONLY 54 PERCENT
of the time…

14. …not much better than flipping a coin!
On the other hand, someone with
proper training in lie detection is
typically able to pick out a lie about 90
percent of the time.
