A
rchitecture is the process and product of
planning, designing, and constructing
other buildings or structures.
Architectural works in the physical form of
buildings are often viewed as cultural symbols
and works of art. Historical civilizations
are often identified with their preserved
architectural achievements. Traditions that
began in prehistoric times have been used as
cultural expressions of civilization on seven
continents. For this reason, architecture is
considered an art form.
Architecture started as a rural and verbal
architecture, from trial and error to successful
production. The architecture of the ancient
city was taken care of during the construction
of religious buildings and structures that
represented the political power of the
rulers. Indian and Chinese architecture has
influenced shapes throughout Asia, and
Buddhist architecture, in particular, has taken
on different local colors.
Modern architecture began after World War
I as an avant-garde movement that sought
to create a whole new style appropriate to
the new social and economic order of the
post-war period and aimed at meeting
the needs of the middle and working
class. In doing so, emphasis was placed
on modern technologies, materials,
and technical forms that pave the way
for tall buildings. Many architects were
disillusioned with modernism, which they
viewed as unhistorical and anti-aesthetic,
as postmodern and contemporary
architecture emerged.
The rise of modern architecture began
when the craft was replaced by machine
building. Modern architects have
developed designs that focus more on
people’s way of life than on what they
find beautiful. This architecture is not like
sentimental styles of awakening. Instead,
it’s innovative, experimental, and limited.
Urban planning is the process of designing
and shaping the physical features of
cities, towns, and villages and planning to
provide urban services to residents and
visitors. Although these are topics that
go beyond architecture, they cannot be
understood as a completely separate field
from research and design, because the
quality of one depends on the quality of
the other.

Vision and mission
As a professional service firm offering a range of disciplines, from architectural and urban design to research,
planning, and consulting, we are often approached by clients who have ideas about what they want to see
built. In response, we try to think about how we can contribute to society or address societal problems that
need to be solved. That’s my thinking, anyway. Here at Nikken Sekkei, the approach of contributing to society
is a fundamental principle. This concept accelerated in the 1990s with the collapse of the so-called “Bubble
Economy” (a prolonged period of falling asset values, including stock and real estate markets, along with
a proliferation of outstanding debt). This led to a shakeout of architectural projects, leaving only the really
important jobs. Among these were railway station and railway-related projects, including TODs (Transit
Oriented Developments), the know-how for which we embraced and now actively market overseas.
The fall in national tax revenues due to the recession caused a fall in funding for public projects, so we focused
on privately funded jobs. Before the recession, there were many public-private joint ventures (the so-called “third
sector” of the economy). These gave way to the rise of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) aimed at lessening the
public financial burden. Current PPPs include the plans for remaking the Shibuya Station area of Tokyo where
both private enterprises and public-use spaces are closely intertwined.
Why clients choose Nikken Sekkei
Clients prefer Nikkei Sekkei because we undertake projects that others won’t do and/or have never done
before. We are built in this way -- to embrace the cutting edge. We do not typically compete for jobs that any
architecture design firm can do. Clients don’t hire us because we are the fastest or the most economical; it’s
because we welcome challenges. Since our founding in 1900, attempting the unattempted has been a primary

Ongoing challenges faced while continuing to grow the company
Deciding how to respond to the societal issues is a challenge. We apply our strength and ability into architecture,
urban spaces, parks, and public spaces. These are “real,” tangible efforts in places, locations and facilities. It’s not
like the exhilarating 3-D digital gaming world; there is no virtual reality to create in what we do.

Describing services and completed projects
In introducing our work and pitching ourselves, we try to demonstrate that it’s not really a matter
of the size of the project per se, but the societal value of a project, large or small. Of course, there
are many projects in which we aren’t the sole designer. Take, for example, the redesign of Ginza
Station (in central Tokyo, completed in 2020). We were responsible for the station design itself,
but remained conscious of the fact that our design influenced the surrounding areas and stations,
too. Who and how were these areas going to be taken care of? This aspect of the industry, so-
called “process design” (essentially, ensuring that all design components fit together), is also a
critical element in responding to societal needs.
Achievements and awards
In an architecture firm, things are sharply defined in terms
of who does what and who is responsible. But responding
to pressing societal needs requires cooperation. What
is really important in modern projects is to be able to
overcome partisanship and form structures that allow for
cooperation and proper management, etc. Teamwork is
really important. As far as the urban development projects in
which Nikken Sekkei is involved, I think we achieve pretty
good collaboration. Of course, we have rivals in the industry,
but when it comes to addressing the important societal
issues of our times, these rivals are also our partners. Over
the decades, the company has won hundreds of accolades
for innovative, cutting-edge designs. One of its most
internationally recognizable projects in recent years is the
634-meter tall TOKYO SKYTREE. Completed in 2012 for
Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. and Tobu Tower Skytree Co., Ltd., it
has become a national landmark. It has received widespread
recognition, including the 2014 Building Contractors Society
(BCS) award.
Over the past 12 months, and despite the global COVID-19
pandemic, Nikken Sekkei has continued to collect design
awards. These include the Museum Tower Kyobashi (May,
2021), which won the MEP Engineering Award category
at the 18th Annual CTBUH (Council on Tall Building and
Urban Habitat) Awards Program. The project features a low-
energy hybrid ventilation system that harnesses natural wind.
Earlier this year, DaiyaGate Ikebukuro was awarded Project
of the Year - International at CIBSE - Building Performance
Awards 2021, becoming the first Japanese project to receive
the prize.
Four Nikken Sekkei projects were recognized at the
MIPIM Asia Awards 2020 held in Hong Kong in January.
These include Museum Tower Kyobashi (SILVER for Best
Infrastructure, Community & Civic Building), Shibuya
Station Area Redevelopment (BRONZE for Best Mixed-
Use Development), Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store Main
Building (SILVER for Best Refurbished Building), and the
aforementioned DaiyaGate Ikebukuro project (GOLD for
Best Office Development). Recent high-profile international
design competition wins include the architectural and urban
planning development concept for Moscow’s Rizhsky Freight
Yard (2021), a sprawling, mixed-use project for Russian
Railways. In 2016, Nikken Sekkei won the renovation
design competition for Camp Nou, the home stadium of FC
Barcelona, in a joint proposal with a local firm.

Personal struggle/journey
As a university student, I was interested in the Daikanyama Hillside Terrace (a diverse complex of residences,
shops, and offices in an upscale Tokyo neighborhood). Its concept to connect private and municipal public
spaces particularly appealed to me. I understood that Nikken Sekkei worked on projects like this, so I was
excited to do that there after graduation. Seven to eight years into my term at the company (around 1990), I
had a chance to work on the SHIODOME SIO-SITE, and Saitama New Urban Center redevelopment projects.
Shiodome is near Ginza, where land values are very high. Big companies also bought property there, so
designing public spaces, especially the underground walkway and sunken plaza, and making subways easily
accessible took quite a bit of my energy.
On the other hand, Saitama New Urban Center (located about 36km northwest of Tokyo) was much bigger
and full of public facilities. We had to come up with a “master plan” to determine how we could best contribute
to the city. These experiences helped my confidence later on when I worked on projects such as Tokyo Station
Yaesu Development and Tokyo Midtown.
Expectations for the future
Among the major issues confronting the world such as environmental destruction, global warming,
COVID-19, and natural disasters, we have chosen to concentrate our efforts on carbon neutrality and
disaster prevention. This is where I think we can best contribute as a company. As an expert in my field,
but also as an average person, I need to think in terms of how I live, what I eat, how I move from place to
place, what I consume, etc., as it all adds up and points to the same issues at large.

Advice to emerging entrepreneurs
When offering advice, I often invoke a quote
from Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), honored as
the father of microbiology: “Chance favors the
prepared mind.” This doesn’t mean pouring
endless hours into studying for tests and such,
but rather, to have conviction and resolution
in what you want to do. So, when you pick
up a newspaper, for example, and you read
something, you will spontaneously come to
think of ways in which you can contribute
with your own ideas. Many Japanese proverbs
resonate in a similar way to Pasteur’s quote,
but this one is especially good, I think.

How it began?
We need clean air to breathe, clean water to drink,
silent environment for a good sleep. Couple of
decades back, when the industrial revolution was
rising at a rapid pace after the end of World War II,
people residing in the villages was migrating towards
urban areas in search of jobs to live a peaceful
life. Many changes have been recorded since the
establishment of UN council to maintain peace on
the planet.
Economic prosperity was one of those important
aspects which directly or indirectly impact our lives.

Why we need Green Cover in the city?
In last decade which ended few months back, had
recorded extreme heat waves, flash floods and many
other natural disasters which clearly showcase, what we
had done to our environment. It is not just about any one
country, region, or continent, the whole earth is suffering
due to man made changes to the nature. To narrow down
the effects on the factors, people living in the city area
are witnessing major illness, and heat strokes. The use
of multiple devices, and change in the food habit, work
culture are some of the causes why we need parks and
mini forest areas in the middle of our residential areas.

green spaces and their impacts. They speak about the
urban heat island effect, which is a growing challenge
for cities. Structures made of asphalt, cement, and steel,
like roads, pavement, and buildings accumulate a lot

“heat islands.” Heat islands can form under a variety of
conditions, including during the day or night, in small or
large cities, in suburban areas, in northern or southern

irmas Asri’s works can be seen as an important
part of Indonesia’s architectural history. Trying
to understand his work leads us to different
perceptionsofaparticularstyle,classification,shapeand
personality. In the end, a spatial image of the diversity of
the company’s architecture business is created.
There are meanings in the world. Then the body
experiences the things around it. Perception is based
on the relationship between meaningful objects in this
world while maintaining a certain distance from the
object, which enables us to study, combine, analyze and
question. This gives the same quality of visualization.
Here is a question: What meaning determines our
understanding of Airmas Asri? This article attempts
to examine the various ways, assumptions, and
reasons for understanding the importance of doing
business in a company.
Perception of Airmas Asri
In Indonesian architecture, the roof is the crown and
head of a building. For example, traditional Javanese
architecture has five roof shapes: Panggang Pe,
Kampung, Limasan, Joglo and Tajug. Each number
represents the upper limit of social status. The crown -
above the building - can be part of the spatial legitimacy
that gives it a special meaning.
The crown is also evident in modern Airmas works
such as The Pakubuwono View. Although there does
not seem to be a connection between this work, it is
inspired by the Prambanan temple complex. Similar
to the temple, the Pakubuwono facade is designed as
a head (crown), body and legs. The Pakubuwono View
crown itself is based on the Pramban crown, but here
the Pramban crown is interpreted through an Art Deco
design, making the crown tower the center of the city.
The details of this crown are related to the batik style.
This is an application of “Java Ancient” in tower design.
The shape of the Java Temple has been beautifully
altered to create a shape that matches the body of the
building and the base of the building.
Contextually Iconic
One of Airmas Asri’s works that expresses the concept of
textile iconography is the Talavera Office Park. Located
between TB Simatupang Road and Pangeran Antasari
Street, next to the busy Jakarta Outer Road, it is a symbol
of the area. In relation to the situation in the region in
2005 (when the project started), which was not now
overcrowded, this plan gives the courage to develop
the region. The Talavera Office Park is a neighborhood
landmark that has successfully created an identity for
this neighborhood. The design of the building has an
“aerodynamic” quality in that it is visible to people
in fast cars.

3D Printing on the move
3D printers were in the trial stage with ability to build
small scale structures or prototypes of a particular
design with given a command to it by a computer
softwareCAD(ComputerAidedDesign).3Dprinting,
or additive manufacturing, is the construction of a
three-dimensional object from a CAD model or a
digital 3D model. The term “3D printing” can refer to
a variety of processes in which material is deposited,
joined or solidified under computer control to create
a three-dimensional object, with material being
added together (such as plastics, liquids or powder
grains being fused together), typically layer by layer.
In the 1980s, 3D printing techniques were considered
suitable only for the production of functional or
aesthetic prototypes, and a more appropriate term
for it at the time was rapid prototyping. As of 2019,
the precision, repeatability, and material range of
3D printing have increased to the point that some
3D printing processes are considered viable as an
industrial-production technology, whereby the term
additive manufacturing can be used synonymously
with 3D printing.
One of the key advantages of 3D printing is the
ability to produce very complex shapes or geometries
that would be otherwise impossible to construct by
hand, including hollow parts or parts with internal
truss structures to reduce weight. Fused deposition
modeling (FDM), which uses a continuous filament
of a thermoplastic material, is the most common 3D
printing process in use as of 2020.

3D construction/Printing refers to various
technologies that use 3D printing as a core method

Alternative terms are also in use, such as additive
construction, Autonomous Robotic Construction
System (ARCS), Large Scale Additive Manufacturing
(LSAM), or Freeform Construction (FC).
There are an assortment of 3D printing strategies
utilized at development scale, with the principle
ones being expulsion (concrete/cement, wax, froth,
polymers), powder holding (polymer security,
receptive security, sintering), and added substance
welding. 3D printing at a development scale will
include a wide assortment of uses inside the private,
business, modern and public areas. Expected benefits
of these robotization advances incorporate quicker
development, lower costs, simplicity of development,
empowering DIY development, expanded intricacy

industry was valuated at $3million back in 2019
and now it is projected to be $1.6 Billion by 2024.
Supporters of this industry say that “it could boost
the world’s supply of affordable housing”.

  • 6. From the EDITOR A rchitecture is the process and product of planning, designing, and constructing other buildings or structures. Architectural works in the physical form of buildings are often viewed as cultural symbols and works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their preserved architectural achievements. Traditions that began in prehistoric times have been used as cultural expressions of civilization on seven continents. For this reason, architecture is considered an art form. Architecture started as a rural and verbal architecture, from trial and error to successful production. The architecture of the ancient city was taken care of during the construction of religious buildings and structures that represented the political power of the rulers. Indian and Chinese architecture has influenced shapes throughout Asia, and Buddhist architecture, in particular, has taken on different local colors. Modern architecture began after World War I as an avant-garde movement that sought to create a whole new style appropriate to the new social and economic order of the
  • 7. post-war period and aimed at meeting the needs of the middle and working class. In doing so, emphasis was placed on modern technologies, materials, and technical forms that pave the way for tall buildings. Many architects were disillusioned with modernism, which they viewed as unhistorical and anti-aesthetic, as postmodern and contemporary architecture emerged. The rise of modern architecture began when the craft was replaced by machine building. Modern architects have developed designs that focus more on people’s way of life than on what they find beautiful. This architecture is not like sentimental styles of awakening. Instead, it’s innovative, experimental, and limited. Urban planning is the process of designing and shaping the physical features of cities, towns, and villages and planning to provide urban services to residents and visitors. Although these are topics that go beyond architecture, they cannot be understood as a completely separate field from research and design, because the quality of one depends on the quality of the other. In our edition, APAC’s 10 Most Innovative Architecture Leaders to Follow in 2021, on the cover story we have Mr. Atushi OMATSU, President & CEO of Nikken Sekkei Co. Ltd. Vision and mission As a professional service firm offering a range of disciplines, from architectural and urban design to research, planning, and consulting, we are often approached by clients who have ideas about what they want to see built. In response, we try to think about how we can contribute to society or address societal problems that need to be solved. That’s my thinking, anyway. Here at Nikken Sekkei, the approach of contributing to society is a fundamental principle. This concept accelerated in the 1990s with the collapse of the so-called “Bubble Economy” (a prolonged period of falling asset values, including stock and real estate markets, along with a proliferation of outstanding debt). This led to a shakeout of architectural projects, leaving only the really important jobs. Among these were railway station and railway-related projects, including TODs (Transit Oriented Developments), the know-how for which we embraced and now actively market overseas. The fall in national tax revenues due to the recession caused a fall in funding for public projects, so we focused on privately funded jobs. Before the recession, there were many public-private joint ventures (the so-called “third sector” of the economy). These gave way to the rise of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) aimed at lessening the public financial burden. Current PPPs include the plans for remaking the Shibuya Station area of Tokyo where both private enterprises and public-use spaces are closely intertwined. Why clients choose Nikken Sekkei Clients prefer Nikkei Sekkei because we undertake projects that others won’t do and/or have never done before. We are built in this way -- to embrace the cutting edge. We do not typically compete for jobs that any architecture design firm can do. Clients don’t hire us because we are the fastest or the most economical; it’s because we welcome challenges. Since our founding in 1900, attempting the unattempted has been a primary focus of the company. Ongoing challenges faced while continuing to grow the company Deciding how to respond to the societal issues is a challenge. We apply our strength and ability into architecture, urban spaces, parks, and public spaces. These are “real,” tangible efforts in places, locations and facilities. It’s not like the exhilarating 3-D digital gaming world; there is no virtual reality to create in what we do.

Of course, there are many projects in which we aren’t the sole designer. Take, for example, the redesign of Ginza Station (in central Tokyo, completed in 2020). We were responsible for the station design itself, but remained conscious of the fact that our design influenced the surrounding areas and stations, too. Who and how were these areas going to be taken care of? This aspect of the industry, so- called “process design” (essentially, ensuring that all design components fit together), is also a critical element in responding to societal needs.
  • 15. Achievements and awards In an architecture firm, things are sharply defined in terms of who does what and who is responsible. But responding to pressing societal needs requires cooperation. What is really important in modern projects is to be able to overcome partisanship and form structures that allow for cooperation and proper management, etc. Teamwork is really important. As far as the urban development projects in which Nikken Sekkei is involved, I think we achieve pretty good collaboration. Of course, we have rivals in the industry, but when it comes to addressing the important societal issues of our times, these rivals are also our partners. Over the decades, the company has won hundreds of accolades for innovative, cutting-edge designs. One of its most internationally recognizable projects in recent years is the 634-meter tall TOKYO SKYTREE. Completed in 2012 for Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. and Tobu Tower Skytree Co., Ltd., it has become a national landmark. It has received widespread recognition, including the 2014 Building Contractors Society (BCS) award. Over the past 12 months, and despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, Nikken Sekkei has continued to collect design awards. These include the Museum Tower Kyobashi (May, 2021), which won the MEP Engineering Award category at the 18th Annual CTBUH (Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat) Awards Program. The project features a low- energy hybrid ventilation system that harnesses natural wind. Earlier this year, DaiyaGate Ikebukuro was awarded Project of the Year - International at CIBSE - Building Performance Awards 2021, becoming the first Japanese project to receive the prize. Four Nikken Sekkei projects were recognized at the MIPIM Asia Awards 2020 held in Hong Kong in January. These include Museum Tower Kyobashi (SILVER for Best Infrastructure, Community & Civic Building), Shibuya Station Area Redevelopment (BRONZE for Best Mixed- Use Development), Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store Main Building (SILVER for Best Refurbished Building), and the aforementioned DaiyaGate Ikebukuro project (GOLD for Best Office Development). Recent high-profile international design competition wins include the architectural and urban planning development concept for Moscow’s Rizhsky Freight Yard (2021), a sprawling, mixed-use project for Russian Railways. In 2016, Nikken Sekkei won the renovation design competition for Camp Nou, the home stadium of FC Barcelona, in a joint proposal with a local firm. Tokyo Station Yaesu Development - Rainer Viertlböck
  • 16. Personal struggle/journey As a university student, I was interested in the Daikanyama Hillside Terrace (a diverse complex of residences, shops, and offices in an upscale Tokyo neighborhood). Its concept to connect private and municipal public spaces particularly appealed to me. I understood that Nikken Sekkei worked on projects like this, so I was excited to do that there after graduation. Seven to eight years into my term at the company (around 1990), I had a chance to work on the SHIODOME SIO-SITE, and Saitama New Urban Center redevelopment projects. Shiodome is near Ginza, where land values are very high. Big companies also bought property there, so designing public spaces, especially the underground walkway and sunken plaza, and making subways easily accessible took quite a bit of my energy. On the other hand, Saitama New Urban Center (located about 36km northwest of Tokyo) was much bigger and full of public facilities. We had to come up with a “master plan” to determine how we could best contribute to the city. These experiences helped my confidence later on when I worked on projects such as Tokyo Station Yaesu Development and Tokyo Midtown. Expectations for the future Among the major issues confronting the world such as environmental destruction, global warming, COVID-19, and natural disasters, we have chosen to concentrate our efforts on carbon neutrality and disaster prevention. This is where I think we can best contribute as a company. As an expert in my field, but also as an average person, I need to think in terms of how I live, what I eat, how I move from place to place, what I consume, etc., as it all adds up and points to the same issues at large. Advice to emerging entrepreneurs When offering advice, I often invoke a quote from Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), honored as the father of microbiology: “Chance favors the prepared mind.” This doesn’t mean pouring endless hours into studying for tests and such, but rather, to have conviction and resolution in what you want to do. So, when you pick up a newspaper, for example, and you read something, you will spontaneously come to think of ways in which you can contribute with your own ideas. Many Japanese proverbs resonate in a similar way to Pasteur’s quote, but this one is especially good, I think. Perception of Airmas Asri In Indonesian architecture, the roof is the crown and head of a building. For example, traditional Javanese architecture has five roof shapes: Panggang Pe, Kampung, Limasan, Joglo and Tajug. Each number represents the upper limit of social status. The crown - above the building - can be part of the spatial legitimacy that gives it a special meaning. The crown is also evident in modern Airmas works such as The Pakubuwono View. Although there does not seem to be a connection between this work, it is inspired by the Prambanan temple complex. Similar to the temple, the Pakubuwono facade is designed as a head (crown), body and legs. The Pakubuwono View crown itself is based on the Pramban crown, but here the Pramban crown is interpreted through an Art Deco design, making the crown tower the center of the city. The details of this crown are related to the batik style. This is an application of “Java Ancient” in tower design. The shape of the Java Temple has been beautifully altered to create a shape that matches the body of the building and the base of the building. Contextually Iconic One of Airmas Asri’s works that expresses the concept of textile iconography is the Talavera Office Park. Located between TB Simatupang Road and Pangeran Antasari Street, next to the busy Jakarta Outer Road, it is a symbol of the area.
