  • Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen , today I am going to introduce a few key features of Shiyibao.
  • Shiyibao is designed to help translation teachers to improve the efficiency of giving translation feedbacks, so students can ::get:: more feedbacks.
The design is basically based on my experience as an MTI student. (By the way, MTI means “master of translation and interpreting”.)
  • When I was an MTI student, about my translation assignments, I want these two things most (show) – grades and comments. Because grades can overall tell me how good or bad my translation was, and comments can tell me how to improve in an applicable way, but I did not get them much. It was quite understandable, because there were 75 students in my class (next slide).

  • I also worked as a teacher assistant, responsible for giving feedbacks to undergraduates’ translations. I do like revising or giving comments to other students’ translations to reflect my own translations, but the menial work was really exhausting.
  • I had to open these files one by one. For many times, I found many students had the same mistakes, but I had to give comments on these mistakes repeatedly, that was the unhappy moment.
  • So let me make a little summary about the pain points in translation teaching and learning.

But the good news is this situation is going to be changed, and I am excited to be part of it.
  • After my graduation, I became a product manager of Lingosail, responsible for the design of Shiyibao.
  • I was very excited to see that Lingosail has the technology of giving automatic grades and automatic comments, and…
  • It is very simple, after students finish translating, they can get this report, it can tell students how many points they got, and the ranking, and a robot will give some comments about spelling, terms, some simple grammar, etc. They are ::immediate:: feedbacks, which can provide excellent learning experience.
This function is based on automatic translation quality evaluation algorithm.
  • It is kind of like magic to me, so I cannot elaborate it. I just know it has been tested for many times in many experiments. The relevance between human grading and Shiyibao grading is high.
  • So we've got automatic grades and comments.
  • But it‘s not enough, teachers still need to give “human comments”, so we developed or are developing the following functions.
  • This one is mainly about the display of source text and translations.
One paragraph of source text is here, and students’ translations of this paragraph are here. This simple feature can dramatically save menial work, teachers don’t have to open emails or files one buy one.
Next I will introduce two key features which can make giving comments far more efficient.
  • The first one is clustering.
  • This function is based on cluster algorithm, it can divide students’ translations into different groups according to similarity. The translations in the same group can be similar at lexical or syntactical level. This can help teachers find common mistakes, and they can send comments to the whole group or some students in the group. Very convenient and flexible!
  • The second is Translations Extracting
  • This function is also about grouping. It means if some students’ translations of a fragment of the source text are identical, they will be divided into one group, telling teachers how many ways students use to translate it and how many students use the same way to translate it and then decide to give what comments.

This function is based on word alignment algorithm. I believe some of you can guess it.

The previous slides introduced one kind of usage scenarios of Shiyibao, which is for translation learning and teaching in universities. And…
  • There’s another kind of usage scenarios……
  • It’s for Language Service Providers
  • LSPs can use Shiyibao to recruit translators, automatic grading results can help them find the appropriate translators.
About translators training, the functions of giving comments can also help LSPs reduce training costs and achieve better training effect.

  • The last thing I want to say is: there are few products aiming at optimizing translation teaching, training, or learning experience.
I was an MTI student, I know that by developing some functions, even very little functions, translation teaching, training, and learning experience can be improved a lot.
Shiyibao is combining machine work and human work to achieve this goal.

That's why I am passionate about this product. Thank you very much!
