IBBR Process to Evaluate Potential Energy
Consumption Reduction Measures
 Identify the need (what do we want/need to do and why)
• Will the end result:
• Improve operational efficiency?
• Improve operational reliability?
• Reduce operational cost?
• Improve lab/workspace environment?
 Identify impact on labs and occupants (+/-)
• Workmen in the labs/workspaces
• Temperature/humidity conditions
• Effect of final result of the project
 Safety concerns
 Funding sources and incentives
 Payback on investment

Strategy to Implement Projects
 Frame basic scope of work
 Identify all stake holders
 Engage stake holders in project planning and scheduling(flesh out final scope
of work)
 Identify funding mechanism(s)
 Procure services
 Communicate the plan to contractors/installers
 Monitor, Evaluate and Revise the plan as the situation requires.
 Provide what you promise, communicate what you can’t
 Follow up on and clear outstanding issues
 Obtain stake holder buy in on job completion (make adjustments if
necessary)

Impact of Dynamic Control on Dilution Rates
• 1.5 L spill of acetone in 200 sq ft lab room, 1 sq. m spill
• After vaporized, dynamic system hits TLV in 20 vs. 60 min
• After 2 hours dynamic control has dropped level to 2.6 PPM
– After 2 hours, 6 ACH system is at 302 PPM or 116 times higher!

Lighting Retrofit Objective
18
The objective of the this project is to
optimize fixture spacing in lab spaces to
provide an average illuminance on the
desktop/bench top of 50 foot candles and
10-20 foot candles on non-working
surfaces. In so doing we intended to
reduce total lighting consumption by 50%.
