While the sector itself is
relatively small, it is growing
and the wider effects of
space are expansive
All nine national critical
infrastructures rely on space
- almost all UK sectors would
be disrupted in the absence
of space services
For this reason
space/satellites is
recognised by Gov as one of
the eight great/ emerging
technologies
Case for Space 2015
Valuation of sectors supported by space-enabled services (2013)
10. Why now?
The perfect storm……..
Technological advances in satellite capability – smaller
& cheaper, reducing the cost of access to space.
Access to free data
(e.g. from Copernicus Sentinels)
Political commitment and funding for developing
operational applications and services
Skills and people across UK public and private sector
Developments in data processing and storage
Austerity/cuts – change agenda
This is an opportunity for SSGP….small programme
with a big vision
11. Space for Smarter Government
UK Space Agency led and funded programme, established
in 2014
Delivered in collaboration with a neutral team from the
Satellite Applications Catapult
Aims to help the public sector save money, innovate and
make more effective policy decisions using space
Unblock barriers preventing this change from happening
through collaboration, communication, education and
inspiration
Work with industry, academia and public sector users to
bring sustainable operational services to market which
meet a defined public sector requirement
12. SSGP Mission
Government itself uses space for smarter, more efficient operations and
making use of existing investment
Government aspires to be a first intelligent customer and drives growth
through using space derived products and services and encouraging
their export.
We want to help public sector save money, innovate and make more
effective policy decisions

18. Earth Observation: why it matters
Increasing society reliance on EO for weather and climate, disaster
response and environmental monitoring, risk management and mapping
etc.
EO applications and services predicted to be central to space-enabled
economic growth
Downstream use is linked to subsequent upstream development and
investment - which can have a long lead time
Senior interest in promoting uptake:
– Ministerial Oversight Committee on Horizon Scanning/Emerging
Technologies
– Cabinet Secretary interest
– Establishment of Perm Sec led cross
Government Earth Observation working group

20. Barriers to EO Uptake
Perception of too costly and too technical for most
end users
Low awareness of what satellites can do and their
ability to meet policy needs
Resilience/security concerns
Access to appropriate experts/skills or services
Existing investment creates inertia to change
Data analysis needs, data management and data
access is not consistent
Investment needed to trial a “new” system
Case for change needs to be demonstrated
Culture change needed to effectively embed
21. So….how can industry get involved?
Space for Smarter Government
- Ongoing Events, Focal Area Challenges and Competitions
Cross Government EODiscovery Day
Q - How can industry help overcome the barriers to EO uptake across
Government?
Q – Tell us what operational services you can already offer that use satellite
data that could meet public sector needs?
How to engage
• Talk to us at the lunch break
• Attend our advertised
events/workshops
• Access and play with the free
data available
• Email us (via the SSGP
website)
• Collectively engage via your
SSGP Board reps
