2. If you want to lose weight, build muscle and
achieve an attractive body physique, doing
cardio and weight training are both important.
3. But what do you do when you
are pressed for time and you
need to squeeze both cardio
exercise and weight training
into your workout session at
the gym, which one should you
do first that would be
beneficial for your weight loss?
4. The answer is simple and direct:
ALWAYS DO WEIGHT TRAINING
FIRST!
5. Never change this! Although
a lot of men break this rule
and do cardiovascular
exercise before they lift
weights, it is not the most
efficient way to burn body
fat and it would hinder your
muscle growth.
6. You must be
wondering why
weight training has
to come first before
cardio exercise, here
are the reasons why:
8. Going by this alone, it makes sense that
you are supposed to do the most labour
intensive activity first when you have the
most strength and energy.
9. Also, weight training depends heavily
on the stored energy in your muscle
tissues (your glycogen reserves).
10. So, if you do cardio exercise first, you are not going to be
able to lift as heavy or do as many repetitions as you can
because the cardio exercise would have reduce some of
your stored energy and you would not perform at your
best during your weight training session.
11. Your muscle growth is going to be reduced
if you are not putting the most energy you
can when you are lifting weights.
12. Yes, cardio is great in burning a lot of calories
which is important since you want to lose
excess body fat, BUT doing weight training
first is a way to put your fat burning on
steroids.
13. By lifting weights before you do cardio
exercise, you are using up your stored
energy (glycogen in your muscles and liver).
14. After you are done with your weight training
session, your glycogen reserves would be much
lower. Now, when you begin doing cardio
exercise, it increases your heart rate.
15. Your body needs energy to fuel your cardio
exercise, so to keep you going when your
glycogen reserves are low, your body begins
using fatty tissue reserves as its source of energy.
16. If you are not convinced about this, do this
challenge: on a day that you normally exercise,
go to the gym and do your regular cardio
exercises before you lift weights.
17. Now choose another day that you normally
exercise but this time do the opposite - do your
weight training before you do cardio exercise.
18. Ensure that you do the same exercises
for the same amount of time during the
cardio first and weight training first days.
19. You would notice more
energy for your weight
training program when done
first, and since cardio requires
much less energy, you will still
be able to get through your
cardio session without any
decrease in performance.
20. You would have more
energy to complete your
weight training if you do it
first. And you would still be
able to complete your cardio
exercise session because
cardio demands a lot less
energy from you than
weight training.
21. Remember, if you are
going to do cardio
exercise and weight
training on the same
day, make sure that you
do weight training FIRST
before you do cardio
exercise.
