 Wikipedia=wiki+(encyclo)pedia.
 Wikipedia is a free open content Online encyclopedia created through the collaborative effort of a
community of users known as a wikipedians.
 Anyone registered on the site can create an article for publication.
 Also anyone can edit the text without the registration.
 Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet and is ranked
among the ten most popular websites.
 Wikipedia is owned by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation.

4. History Of Wikipedia
 Nupedia
1. Wikipedia began as a complementary project for nupedia.
2. Its main figures were Jimmy Wales,the CEO of Bomis, and Larry Sanger, editor-in-chief for
Nupedia and later Wikipedia.
3. Nupedia was not open source.
4. Hence Wikipedia is revealed.
 Launch and early growth:-
1. Wikipedia was launched on January 14,2001.
2. By the end of January it had over 20,000 articles and 18 languages.
3. By the end of 2004 it was available in 161 different languages.
4. In the November 25, 2013, issue of New York magazine, Katherine Ward stated "Wikipedia, the
sixth-most-used website, is facing an internal crisis".

5. Openness
 Unlike Traditionals:-
1. Wikipedia follows the procrastination principle.
2. It started almost entirely open.
Restrictions:- on the English Wikipedia and some other language editions, only registered users may
create new article.
 Review of changes:-
1. The software that powers Wikipedia provides certain tools allowing anyone to review changes made by
others.
2. Peoples can undo others changes by clicking a link on the article's history page.
 Vandalism:-
1. vandalism is the act of editing the project in a malicious manner that is intentionally disruptive.
2. Obvious vandalism is generally easy to remove from Wikipedia articles; the median time to detect and fix
vandalism is a few minutes.

 Wikipedia is an encyclopedia.
 Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view.
 Wikipedia is free content that anyone can use,edit and distribute.
 Editors should treat others with respect and civility.

 Freedom in the sence of GNU .
 Collebrative software which respect the users
 Open and free.

8. Conclusion
 Wikipedia is community.
 Wikipedia is most usefull as a quick and simple way to find basic reference
information. It will never be a source of primary literature.
 Wikipedia is by and large,accurate most of the time .However,until some formal
validation process is introduced, the information can not be considered 100%
reliable.
