TEACHER’S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 2017
ACTION RESEARCH
Topic : Poor science academic result
Time: Every Monday and Day– I( 4th period)
Sciencedepartment, Senior Section
T.C.V School Ladakh
ACTION RESEARCH
Is a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those
taking the action.
The primary reason for engaging an action research to assist
the “actor” in improving and/or refining his or her action.
The action research process
1. Selecting a focus
2. Clarifying theories
3. Identifying research question
4. Collecting data
5. Analyzing data
6. Reporting results
7. Taking informed action
Why action research now?
1. Reprofessionalize teaching
2. Enhance the motivation and efficiency of teacher
3. Meets the needs of present day school education system

Reason behind poor academic result
 Minimum school hours= 9hrs20min
Being a learner effective hours you have for learning
 Class hours = 5hrs40min
 Break time= 1hrs45min
 Self study =1hrs
 But what you do in real during these hours unless there is no
supervisor(Teachers)
- roaming around the corridors
-playing in the classroom
-Gossiping
-standing near the classroom door
-sleeping in the classroom
And while teaching
-Being inattentive
- No textbook/notebook
- Incomplete works
POSSIBLE
CAUSES
POOR
LISTENING
Only you can change your behavior
• Being a learner:
 Make sure you spent your time effectively
Energy you spent on:
 Solving one question will help you much more than a time you spent standing
near the classroom door.
 Pre-reading of the topic to be taught will let you understand the topic much
better than roaming around the corridors.
 Discussing among peers about any doubtful concept will make you learn more
than just gossiping around.
 Reading any interesting book will connect you to the outside world rather than
just bounded playing in the classroom.
 Being attentive while teaching will surely help you to learn the concept much
faster and will reduce your work load.
 So, you all energetic learners, please change from now on, make sure, you
spent your energy to something worthwhile
So, you all energetic learners,
change from now on, make sure, you spent your energy to
something worthwhile.
THANK YOU…..!
1. Selecting focus
Poor science academic result
2. Clarifying theories.
Poor science academic result in last few
examination.
3. Identifying research question.
Assumptions (Science teachers)
- Lack of interest
- Language problem
- Inconsistent
- Poor basic
-Lack of practical classes
4. Collecting data
5. Analyzing data
6. Reporting results
7. Taking informed action
Generalized feedback
Collected feedback from students of classIX and X regarding the difficulty level of
science as a subject.
Total number of students: 285
Those who consider science as adifficult subject: 207(72.6%)
Those who consider science as aneasy subject: 78(27.4%)
Difficult because
- difficulty in solving numerical
- confusion regarding the application of formula
- lack of interest
- language incompetency
- unable to comprehend the question during exam
- unable to relate the basic mathematical concept while solving science
calculation
- concept/ formula retention problem
Easy because
-interested in learning science
- ambition related to science stream
- can relate science concept with daily life experiences
- can learn better through practical work

Conclusion
o With our research based activities, we intend to diagnose the problem as in
why we had the problem regarding poor science academic result in last few
examinations.
o Even though, we are concluding our TPD 2017 today but we shall continue
with our work in following years.
o Our teachers professional development programme has helped us in many
ways to ensure more efficient teaching science as a subject.
o We also hope that our programme is of some use to our student as well.

TCV School Choglamsar, Leh (Science Action Research )

  • 1. TEACHER’S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 2017 ACTION RESEARCH Topic : Poor science academic result Time: Every Monday and Day– I( 4th period) Sciencedepartment, Senior Section T.C.V School Ladakh
  • 2. ACTION RESEARCH Is a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action. The primary reason for engaging an action research to assist the “actor” in improving and/or refining his or her action.
  • 3. The action research process 1. Selecting a focus 2. Clarifying theories 3. Identifying research question 4. Collecting data 5. Analyzing data 6. Reporting results 7. Taking informed action
  • 4. Why action research now? 1. Reprofessionalize teaching 2. Enhance the motivation and efficiency of teacher 3. Meets the needs of present day school education system
  • 5. PROBLEM AT A GLANCE
  • 6. 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 CLASS -X RESULT No of student No. of students scoring above 5 = 73 No. of students scoring below 5 = 57

  • 12. PASS % 72% FAIL% 29% CLASS 9 RESULT (P1+ P2)
  • 13. Reason behind poor academic result  Minimum school hours= 9hrs20min Being a learner effective hours you have for learning  Class hours = 5hrs40min  Break time= 1hrs45min  Self study =1hrs  But what you do in real during these hours unless there is no supervisor(Teachers) - roaming around the corridors -playing in the classroom -Gossiping -standing near the classroom door -sleeping in the classroom And while teaching -Being inattentive - No textbook/notebook - Incomplete works
  • 16. Only you can change your behavior • Being a learner:  Make sure you spent your time effectively Energy you spent on:  Solving one question will help you much more than a time you spent standing near the classroom door.  Pre-reading of the topic to be taught will let you understand the topic much better than roaming around the corridors.  Discussing among peers about any doubtful concept will make you learn more than just gossiping around.  Reading any interesting book will connect you to the outside world rather than just bounded playing in the classroom.  Being attentive while teaching will surely help you to learn the concept much faster and will reduce your work load.  So, you all energetic learners, please change from now on, make sure, you spent your energy to something worthwhile
  • 17. So, you all energetic learners, change from now on, make sure, you spent your energy to something worthwhile. THANK YOU…..!

  • 47. Conclusion o With our research based activities, we intend to diagnose the problem as in why we had the problem regarding poor science academic result in last few examinations. o Even though, we are concluding our TPD 2017 today but we shall continue with our work in following years. o Our teachers professional development programme has helped us in many ways to ensure more efficient teaching science as a subject. o We also hope that our programme is of some use to our student as well.
