  3. 3. Planning to start up a new venture! It sounds like an interesting idea but can be a risky affair. Let’s consider that you have a path-breaking idea. You started working on that idea by carrying out thorough research. You built up best-in-class products or services. You set up the whole business at the right time and even surpassed the competition. You advertised your offerings at the right places. You did everything that was required to turn that idea into a business. It even did well for the first year, but now in the second year, it is struggling to survive. The fact is that all these efforts may be enough for that business to keep running for that particular year but, may not be enough to keep it running for the next 2 or 5 years. The research from the Bureau of Labour Statistics backs up the above statement. It indicates that approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years of being open, and 45% during the first five years. Whereas, only 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more. It is challenging for many people to start up a new venture from the scratch and keep it running. But, this shouldn’t hold you back from your dream of entrepreneurship. This is where franchising comes into play. The idea of owning an existing, proven business model looks more secured and promising, as it already had earned prominence in its respective market. Franchising has been considered as a smart way of doing a business, as its failure rate is lower than it is for mom-and-pop businesses. The challenge can be to choose one that best meets your interests and other requirements. The Franchise Universe has enlisted “The 10 Best Franchises to Open in 2021” for you to make a choice. With an extensive presence across their regions, these franchises have made their way to be known as leaders in their respective industries. 11. 11. I t is evident that any catastrophic incident or accidents that occur, be it from mother nature or due to our own mistakes, cannot be stopped by us. The damage it leaves behind is devastating and costs to restore them are staggering. This is where restoration companies come into the picture. A leader in the restoration industry, Best Option Restoration (BOR) is committed to helping those in need after a disaster. The experienced team at BOR has the knowledge and equipment necessary to make sure that it leaves every home as it was before the incident or what it calls "pre- loss" condition. From mold and sewage remediation to fire damage restoration, or debris removal, the certified technicians of BOR combine courtesy with professionalism to make their customer’s property look and feel like home again. The ingenious mind behind BOR is Nick-Anthony Zamucen. A proven leader, Nick-Anthony Zamucen has really changed the game when it comes to the service franchise industry. BOR is his fourth franchised organization. With an extensive franchise presence across the country, BOR has made its way to be known as a trusted national leader in the disaster restoration industry. Let’s shed some more light on the journey of BOR and why it is the best option to be consider for franchising, through an interview between Nick and The Franchise Universe. Below are the highlights of the interview: What led to the inception of Best Option Restoration? Best Option Restoration, what we like to call BOR, started from seeing another brand I created, Bio- Nick-Anthony Zamucen Founder and President Best Op on Restora on
  12. 12. One the most recognizable crime and trauma scene franchise in the world, seeing their need to have help with jobs. Here’s what I mean, Bio-One franchisees would do a job, which normally entails pulling carpet, perhaps baseboards, maybe drywall etc. and then they would call a restoration company to come do the repairs. I got tired of making other companies money, basically I got tired of pushing the work down the street, so I decided to start a new brand, which today is Best Option Restoration. BOR and Bio-One work together hand-in-hand on jobs to make sure their clients are completely satisfied. Both companies feed each other work, so where there’s a BOR, a Bio-One isn’t too far away. Describe the company and its extensive disaster restoration and cleanup services which address all the needs of your customers. BOR handles all the traditional water, mold, fire, content cleaning services. While teaming up with Bio-One, who handles bio and hoarding, there’s really no situation we’ve come across we can’t handle. ‘‘ ‘‘ They may say they don’t know us now, but they won’t be saying that very much longer.
  13. 13. What makes Best Option Restoration a preferred franchise option over other competitor franchises? BOR franchisees aren’t just trained to be another man in a van with a fan. Our franchisees are thermal technology experts. We use heat to dry structures faster and more efficiently than our competitors. What takes our competitors seven to ten days to dry, we dry in three. We use better technology and we do it from day one. It’s not an afterthought or a “I should have tried that” like our competitors say. We are truly experts in our fields. In addition, we are the only franchised company in our space who will bill, negotiate and collect invoices for our franchisees. We have a collections team which all they do is collect our franchisees invoices from insurance companies. This saves our franchises time and money so they can do what’s important, give outstanding customer service to our clients. Give a detailed description of your influence over the company and the industry. This is my fourth franchised organization. I’m not a newbie trying to figure out what makes a franchise happy, mad, successful etc. I’ve placed hundreds if not thousands of successful franchises in my years of experience. A new brand to me is not a new company who is trying to figure out the space. A new brand to me is another brand of my successful franchised portfolio which grows by the month. To be with me is to be on the winning team. I win, that’s what I do and I can prove it with my years of success. Winning is a formula, and it normally starts by putting the right people in place and adding more value than anyone could possibly expect. Do more for others than they could ever imagine, and you’ll always win. Describe the need for evolution of technology to be prepared for times like that of a global pandemic. How is Best Option Restoration averting the impact that the pandemic has caused? BOR isn’t an economy driven business, so a pandemic, a faulty stock market, an election, none of these things affect a water pipe bursting in someone’s house. These things are going to happen, so BOR franchisees are always ready to go to work and help others. ‘‘ ‘‘ “All of our competitors are on my list. For their sake, I hope they’re paying close attention.”
  14. 14. How do you sustain in the current unpredictable markets and hectic competition? I thrive on winning, so my brain is always looking for ways to add value to my franchisees, so they in turn can exceed expectations to their clients. I don’t lay back on my laurels and think that I can’t be beat…anyone can be. There are two fundamental ways of growing a business…marketing and innovation. My franchisees are out marketing their business on an everyday basis. I am constantly looking for ways to innovate, disrupt or add on additional revenue streams, so we always stay on top. Describe in detail about the work culture and the values that drive the company. My office is very relaxed. I don’t micromanage, I hire the talent and let them do their job. We don’t ask for vacation time, we find out who’s going and for how long. We’re not children, we don’t need our hands held. We all know what needs to get done on a monthly basis to run a successful company and we work when we need to. We play the rest of the time. I believe in a family atmosphere. Does it bite me in the butt sometimes? Of course, but my staff will take a bullet for me and I will do the same. What is your vision for the company? And what would be the best roadmap for getting there? We’re going to get big. BOR is really going to be a major player in the game. We’re going to give those ugly yellow trucks and disgusting avocado green ones a run for their money. I’m coming after everyone. They’re all my targets. They may say they don’t know us now, but they won’t be saying that very much longer. They’re all on my list. For their sake, I hope they’re paying close attention. I’m going to eat their lunch. Some Satisfied Franchisees “I never thought I would be able win in an industry this competitive, but I win every day.” —Kyle C. BOR of Cherry Creek “Never having any experience with insurance companies or really restoration, I’m making more money than I thought was ever possible. I love Nick and my BOR franchise.” -Mike M. BOR of Thornton “I was nervous to leave my six-figure job for a startup franchise. Nick and the management team at BOR are truly phenomenal. Not a single regret and I’m making more now than I ever have.” -Jason F. BOR of N. Vegas

Parents, grandparents, coaches, mentors – virtually anyone – set an example or said something that struck a chord. In the case of Paul Woodall Davis, two guiding principles were the bedrock for him founding a company in the 1960s that became Paul Davis Restoration, one of North America’s most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry with 325 independently owned franchises in the United States and Canada. For more than 55 years, Paul Davis has restored residential and commercial properties damaged by fire, water, storms, mold and other disasters and has offered cleaning services for biohazards such as COVID-19. Paul Davis is a one-stop disaster mitigation and restoration company. It is the insurance industry’s restoration expert and recognized as one of The Best Franchises to Open in 2021. “At Paul Davis, our vision is to ‘provide extraordinary care while serving people in their time of need,’” said Mike Hopkins, Sr. Chief Operating Officer with Paul Davis. “This occurs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and all year-round. It’s a responsibility and it is the centerpiece of our company. Our inspirational founder set us firmly on this course.” Said Hopkins: “At Paul Davis, when homes and businesses are damaged, we provide meaningful action that shepherds people and property back to the places and lives they love.” Davis founded Paul W. Davis Contracting in 1966. It was also during this time that insurance restoration contracting was a “niche market.” Property insurance adjusters were looking for ways to settle claims and Davis saw this fragmented niche for what it is today: a multi-billion-dollar, stand-alone industry. The company began franchising in 1970. That’s when Davis began teaching and is credited with building a system that benefited early franchisees and carries forward even today. In 1997, the company was acquired by FirstService Brands, the leading North American brand in the category of property services, which it delivers through its extensive franchise networks. As a result of its company-wide commitment to excellence, Paul Davis has become the insurance industry’s restoration expert and a trusted source before, during or following an event. Paul Davis offers multiple services through one point of contact, including working with clients to streamline the catastrophe response process, ensuring even the largest of projects are addressed expeditiously, thus minimizing business interruption. In addition, pre-loss planning programs can be created with Paul Davis teams to reduce loss frequency and severity. Paul Davis specializes in work with property management, REIT, multi-family, hospitality, healthcare and manufacturing sectors by partnering with insurance carriers. “Our training and launch teams are the best in the industry. Our state-of-the-art training facility is visited by peers and the media. We have developed marketing strategies and tactics that our franchisees implement to increase brand awareness and market share,” Hopkins said. “Through the hard work of our skilled The 10 Best Franchises to Open in 2021
  17. 17. 20 | June 2021 franchisees, Paul Davis has the respect of the top insurance providers. And because of our ‘best in class’ delivery, we have quality relationships with those providers and that equates to more jobs for our franchisees.” As a result of the powerful systems and support, a highly respected brand, and larger-than-industry- average businesses, franchisees experience the benefit of becoming a Paul Davis franchisee both now, and when they decide it is time to sell. Paul Davis offices are nearly four times the size of competitors, allowing franchisees to handle any need. Hopkins has been involved with FirstService Brands – parent company of Paul Davis – for almost 30 years in a number of roles including franchisee, franchisor, business consultant and coach. As a CertaPro Painters franchise owner, Hopkins’ office became one of the top producing franchises during his 14-year tenure. He was recruited to join the team at Paul Davis in 2015. “I’m very passionate about serving people in their time of need and doing it alongside great people who deliver best-in-class results. I have a strong belief in respecting the individual, delivering what we promise, having pride in what we do, and practicing continuous improvement – the focus is always to be people centered. I stand by a mantra: ‘What gets celebrated, gets accelerated.’ With this, results matter and are celebrated. When there is an issue, because of the respect for one another, it gets discussed and solved. I expect all team members to live the vision, mission and values and to deliver on the brand promise and I am to be held to those same Paul Davis standards.” While Paul Davis was founded and still thrives today based on old-fashioned values, it is an industry pacesetter when it comes to using technology to constantly evolve its business practices, especially in the wake of the pandemic. “Technology has moved forward quickly in our industry for the purpose of better supporting our carrier partners and affected customers,” Hopkins said. “We are leaders in this space as we were moving forward with adoption of tools that allowed us to Our 55-year heritage is one of innovation, resourcefulness, empathy, and outstanding customer service. ‘‘ ‘‘

The use of technology also allowed us to have less physical contact with people in businesses and homes, creating a safer project during the pandemic while still remining personal.” “Our offices fared well during the pandemic because we are essential. Issues arising from broken pipes, fires, storms, or mold continue to happen regardless of world health issues. We also have teams uniquely prepared to clean and treat businesses and homes from COVID contamination because we are properly trained and careful to do so with the utmost care. Our teams deal with dangerous pathogens on a daily basis and made only slight adjustments to safe chemicals used in order to treat against the virus.” And while some industries were hit hard by the pandemic, Paul Davis proved a stalwart because of both its business model and its people, Hopkins said. “Many people know that Paul Davis is recession resistant and now they know that we are also pandemic resistant,” Hopkins said. “We have experienced growth in our number of offices like never before. We also added 21 new franchise locations in this year of pandemic and cutbacks. We are seeing great success with our offices as we carefully qualify, vet, then train, launch and support our franchisees to become indispensable to their communities both in the service they provide and also as the employer of choice.” The decades have only proven that there is a formula for success at Paul Davis, one that was instilled in 1966 and still carries the company forward some 55 years later. “Our team of great people delivers best-in-class service,” Hopkins said. “This is because great people know the score and want to serve on a winning team. Our team cares about one another and results. The culture Mr. Paul Davis instilled is alive and well today. We never stop looking for ways to give back and exceed expectations.” About Paul Davis Restoration For more than 55 years, Paul Davis Restoration, Inc. has restored residential and commercial properties damaged by fire, water, mold, storms and disasters. 19. 19. 22 | June 2021 The 10 Best Franchises to Open in 2021 Michael Miller President and CEO Brightway Insurance David Miller Executive Chairman Brightway Insurance
  20. 20. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 23 | A Market Expert in Insurance Solutions here are several ways to shop for insurance, Tand most consumers would prefer to spend their time doing something else. Understand- ing coverages can be complicated and stressful, and selecting the wrong coverage can leave con- sumers devastated in the event of an uncovered loss. Insurance doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful, though. Brightway Insurance is a national prop- erty/casualty insurance distribution company that sells through local insurance experts who leave no stone unturned when advising their customers. With access to more insurance companies, Brightway Agents are able to build a package of policies customized to meet every customer’s unique needs. What’s more, customers need only one telephone number to reach Brightway’s award- winning Customer Service Center. Michael Miller, Brightway President and CEO, who co-founded the company with his brother, David Miller, Executive Chairman, sheds some light on the importance of selecting the right insurance policy and how the company is helping consumers choose the right package of policies, through an interview conducted with The Franchise Universe. Following are highlights from the interview: Give us a brief overview of Brightway Insurance, and its journey since inception. After running an independent insurance agency in Jacksonville, Florida, for five years, my brother, David, and I looked at what the insurance market offered consumers and asked the question, “What should be?” We determined that consumers would benefit from having a local agent who could provide expert counsel and choice from many different insurance brands and products. We also determined that Agents could sell more policies if a dedicated Customer Service team handled customer service needs, so we invented the “You sell, we service” business model and began franchising in 2008. Since then, the business has evolved to provide holistic business support to franchisees, and we have grown to more than 300 locations in 25 states in the U.S. supporting the insurance needs of more than 300,000 customers coast-to-coast. As a business leader, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the Insurance and franchise industry? We are a recession-proof business, so while many other businesses suffered during the pandemic, we were able to grow and prosper. In fact, the average pre-tax operating profit for the top 25% of Brightway Agencies open for at least five years grew by more than 25% in 2020, and these top 25%
  21. 21. 24 | June 2021 Brightway Agencies averaged over $1 million in revenue in 2020.* Insurance is an essential product that everyone needs regardless of economic conditions. Like many businesses, the pandemic certainly changed the way we work. Many of us who previously worked in the office every day are now working remotely on a full-time or part-time basis. Because of the technology we had in place when the pandemic sent everyone to their homes, we were able to quickly adapt and have the more than 900 people in our system working remotely in a matter of four days. It was a remarkable feat, and we’re so proud of the work of our people for adapting quickly while continuing to serve our Agents and customers. As we grew more efficient and comfortable with operating in a virtual environment, we saw new ways and opportunities to connect. We moved our Day of Discovery in-person event for franchise candidates to a completely virtual experience, transitioned training for new hires and new franchisees to a virtual format and introduced new franchise models and opportunities to start a franchise from home. Being flexible and open to new ways of doing business helped us grow during the recession. What is your opinion on the necessity for businesses to align their offerings with newer technological developments, especially when it comes to Digital Transformation? As more and more consumers come to rely on technology to meet their everyday needs, it makes sense that businesses adapt to provide not only what customers already expect, but more importantly that we work aggressively to lean forward and get ahead of them so we can exceed their expectations. In 2020, we introduced a new powerful, easy-to-use program that provides franchisees with a graphical display of their business results and lets them filter for specific information. We also continue to provide our franchisees with Predictive Index, a world-class candidate assessment tool that we’ve benchmarked with the best Producers in the Brightway system to help franchisees select the best candidates for hire. One of the technology advancements we’re currently developing for our agents is a new online intake form to make quoting and selling policies easier. David and I built our company around our vision for what should be, and because of the successful model along with a great team and fantastic business partners in our franchisees, we’ve built a company that far exceeds the expectations we had in 2008 when we started. Please list the popular services that make your company standout from the competition. For consumers, we offer more choice of insurance Brightway provides everything you need to grow your Agency as fast as possible, including award- winning a er-the- sale service.
  22. 22. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 25 | brands than most independent agencies and expert counsel from local agents supported by a national brand. Brightway franchisees sell Home, Flood, Condo, Renters, Personal Articles, Auto, Umbrella, Motorcycle, Boat, RV, Life and Business insurance. For franchisees, we provide a holistic business platform that empowers them to build a successful business regardless of whether they have insurance experience. We have a team of more than 400 professionals dedicated to providing expertise and support in areas including Customer Service, Accounting, Marketing, Distribution, Business Analytics, Technology, Carrier Appointments, Licensing, Training, Hiring and Retaining personnel. Our signature after-the-sale service empowers franchisees to focus on their customers and growing their business and their sales teams. Another important part of our model and a chief differentiator of Brightway as a franchise opportunity is our franchisees’ ability to earn residual income as policies renew year after year. Very simply, a Brightway franchisee earns insurance commission every single time a policy renews. How do you turn Insurance solutions into a franchise with Brightway’s easier, faster, and more cost-effective services? We understand how to operate a successful insurance agency and have built a model to support people who want to leverage this to build their own Brightway enterprise. We use our size to get the best price for products for our franchisees, such as office equipment and technology, and pass that savings on to our franchisees. Unlike a lot of franchise companies, we don’t profit off the materials our franchisees need to run their business. As a matter of fact, we operate using a Win, Win, 3 Win (Win ) mandate, meaning everything we do must be a win for our franchisees, a win for our customers and a win for the company. Brightway's success is defined in only one way: By the success of our partners. As an established leader, what would be your advice to the budding entrepreneurs aspiring to venture into Insurance Industry? Insurance is a recession-proof business, and the best part is you earn residual income when a policy renews. We work hard to maintain industry leading retention rates because everyone in the business benefits when our customers renew their policies. So, if you have a knack for sales, whether it be in insurance or another industry, Brightway provides the support of a national brand to help you achieve success as a Brightway franchise owner. And we are an aligned business partner; we only grow when our franchisees grow. How do you envision on sustaining your company’s competency in a cutthroat and volatile world of business? Where do you see your company in the next five years? We focus on building the best system possible for our franchisees because when they are successful, we’re successful. We’re working to leverage technology to the fullest to offer a better customer experience, providing customers with service when, where and how they want it. We’re also working to provide a better sales experience for our Agents. Our goal is to help them sell, so we focus on systems and processes that will help them do that more easily and with more efficiency. As a family owned business, we aim to help everyone associated with the business reach their potential. *This representation is based on performance during the 2019 and 2020 calendar years, and can be found in Table 3 of Item 19 of Brightway Insurance Inc.’s Franchise Disclosure Document issued April 20, 2021, which includes 2020 results for the 56 franchisees open and operating for at least five years as of December 31, 2020. The average Pre-Tax Operating Profit for the Top 25% Brightway Locations increased from $425,577 in 2019 to $535,027 in 2020. Of the 14 Top 25% Brightway Locations presented in Table 3, 6 (42%) exceeded the Top 25% Average Pre-Tax Operating Profit. Your individual results may differ. There is no assurance that you will earn as much.
  23. 23. 28 | June 2021 Making TANGIBLE Difference In The BUSINESS WORLD Through FRANCHISING Everyone may not make a successful mark by establishing their own business with transforming their own unique idea into reality. But franchising is one such business that provides business opportunities to everyone; it provides at least something for everyone. For hard- working, globally-minded entrepreneurs, franchising business is the most advantageous business opportunity. It provides business opportunities to franchisors as well as franchisees at national as well as international levels in a huge variety of sectors. Franchisors can expand their business by delegating their business to those franchisees who are interested in their business ideas. Franchisees can invest in the business of their choice of franchisors and can avail themselves of the opportunity to own a business. Franchisors can accelerate their business by delegating their brand value to franchisees who wish to invest in their business. Having most creative idea comes under the intellectual property of a person. Transforming that idea into reality and successful business demonstrates the innovative ability in the business leader. Growth is one of the most important business goals of any organization. Many organizations would like to adopt the franchising concept with the intention of business expansion. A franchise should be able to create its brand by delivering an excellent experience of its services to clients. After being established as a brand then naturally more franchisees can be attracted to the business model of the franchise. A franchise can give franchisees authorized access to its business model, processes, brand, intellectual property, and rights. With the availability of rights and authorized access, franchisees can function under the authorized brands and expand the business of the parent franchising company. As intellectual property of a person has its own brand value, franchisees, who are ready to invest and abide by the norms of franchisors, can have access to this brand value. As they say great fruit comes from a great tree, similarly, franchisees can benefit themselves by choosing a franchisor that offers truly something of significance to the world. Parent organizations can expand their business by delegating their brand and rights to multiple franchisees. Franchisees in return can accept rules and regulations of the franchise and pay certain fees to avail the authorized access of business of the franchise. Agreeing on win-win terms can be beneficial for the franchisor and all franchisees. For a franchisor, the extension of its brand or business model is more of a growth strategy than just expansion. This creation of a franchise system is advantageous to the franchisor as it increases its reputation and reduces the franchisor’s capital investment and liability risk. The franchising system offers a win-win platform for both franchisors as well as its franchisees. Science is organized knowledge and business wisdom means having organized business along
  24. 24. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 29 | with the strategic as well as a contingency plan. The more organized is the franchise system more it will be capable of attracting more franchisees to its business model. With mutual trust and collaboration, franchising can be a medium of success for both franchisees and franchisors. The mutual benefit of both can happen if the quality of services remains intact and thereby it will help more in enhancing the brand value of the franchisor. With a franchising system, franchisors can expand their business rapidly across multiple countries using the resources and capital of their franchisees while minimizing their own risk. Having the strategic as well as a contingency plan in its place allows franchising businesses to thrive even in the most challenging times as well. And it is mutually beneficial to franchisors as well as all the associated franchisees. Entrepreneurship may not be everyone’s cup of tea but franchising certainly can be availed by anyone and one can derive maximum benefit from franchising business. For those who want to be entrepreneurs starting their own company can be difficult. In that case, instead of an independent business start-up, many aspiring entrepreneurs can make a choice of a successful brand by accepting franchising organizations and can increase their chances of success. They can also have a sense of ownership and support for an already successful brand. There are different categories of franchises. Aspiring entrepreneurs get the ready-made business formula to start their business from the franchise. It is okay to play a second- fiddle to someone who has the greatest potential in their business idea. It requires franchisees to have humility in them to play under the franchisors who have more proven credibility. Successful franchisors can offer training and support to train franchisees in running the business model successfully. With this training and support, they can create capable leaders who can successfully run the business model anywhere in the world they would like. Franchise systems should be capable of offering best-in-class training, one-on-one customized support, and helping hand to franchisees in all phases of their business. A franchise should guide all franchisees step by step in helping them become a happy and successful franchise partner. Aspiring entrepreneurs can choose the field of their likes and accept franchising from a renowned brand. Therefore, this franchising concept can also be beneficial for many youths of the world. Through the franchising concept, a franchisor can build a global presence in less time and can establish the status of the global brand by creating a network of franchisees worldwide. The ongoing support of franchisors at every stage of business can lead franchisees to gain a high return on investment with low-cost investment. The franchising industry offers great opportunities for success to both franchisors and franchisees all over the world. Successful leaders are not just leaders in themselves but they also like to create more potential leaders. The franchisors with such a spirit can make a tangible difference in the business world by benefitting many franchisees and all the clients from all over the world. Franchising World

  26. 26. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 31 | Bringing a Futuristic Virtual Reality Dreamscape We all have witnessed the wonders that Virtual Reality technology has brought in our life. It allows you to transport into a variety of new worlds and mirror your movements perfectly into an alternate reality. Not only this, but it also offers an amazing platform for virtual training, meetings, education, therapy, entertainment, and more. In terms of gaming, the immenseness that VR provides offers a level that hasn’t been seen until now. It offers a new way to play together with your family and friends. Ctrl V sees itself at the forefront of this paradigm shift - being the world’s first virtual reality arcade. Ctrl V’s large selection of games and experiences ensures it has something for everyone. It is the ideal venue to host your next birthday party, team building event, corporate event, or just a simple night out with your friends. The Franchise Universe caught up with Robert Bruski, CEO and Co-Founder of Ctrl V to unveil the idea behind the approach that helped to drive the organization. Below are the highlights of the interview: Give us a brief overview of Ctrl V Inc., and its journey since inception. Ctrl V is a virtual reality arcade. Boom! What is that you may ask? Well, it is exactly what it sounds like; an arcade specializing in immersive entertainment. Customers of all kinds visit one of our locations, pay by the hour, and enjoy an “all-you-can-eat” buffet of virtual reality content, or as we like to say, “happiness in the form of virtual reality.” Opening its doors in 2016, Ctrl V was the first virtual reality arcade of its kind in North America. Not only that, but at the time of writing this, it is the largest VR franchise in the world with locations all over the place and many more coming. Ctrl V’s journey dates all the way back to 2016. In early 2016 at CES in Las Vegas, the virtual reality industry had just announced that VR had reached the state of consumer viability and was going to be released in May of that year. A trio of entrepreneurs knew that this was going to be the next generation of location-based entertainment. And so, they began on a journey that was going to be a rollercoaster ride over the next 5 years. Being a consumer-focused product, there wasn’t really any large manufacturer that was interested in the applications of VR for commercial use. The team behind Ctrl V saw an opportunity and did what any entrepreneur does – got to work. After having procured an excessive amount of consumer research and product testing it was time to see if they could get the most important part of the mix – the virtual reality hardware and software. After facing a lot of double and ridicule from the industry, eventually one of the large manufacturers was gracious enough to provide commercial licenses for 16 HMDs. Over the course of 2 months the team secured real estate, equipment, built out the pilot facility, and began marketing with hopes that this enormous risk would pan out as research. One of the first customers that Ctrl V had served, arrived in Waterloo and started inquiring about franchising the concept. Though the team knew a little bit about franchising, it definitely wasn’t their The 10 Best Franchises to Open in 2021
  27. 27. 32 | June 2021 forte. But it was evident that franchising could be an efficient way to achieve a goal of bringing immersive entertainment to the masses, and that it could provide an opportunity for other enthusiasts to become entrepreneurs. So, as most entrepreneurs would do – they got to work. Setting up a franchise system was no easy task. Not only were there policies and procedures to create, but the brand needed to be developed, training systems created, support networks deployed, and a variety of other nuances to franchising that a lot of emerging franchisors don’t know or overlook were impeding. But luckily, this first franchise was a perfect fit for the team and culture and was patient enough to endure throughout the growing pains. In October 2016 agreements were signed and the first franchised Ctrl V location opened in Guelph, Ontario in March of 2017. Since then, Ctrl V has grown across a number of provinces in Canada, as well as states in the USA, and even an international location in Costa Rica. Ctrl V’s culture is one of community involvement, fun, and entrepreneurship. Being on the cusp of a break-out technology, it is the responsibility of the entire team to bring to life what is dreamt of, through virtual reality. When reality isn’t enough… Ctrl V is contributing to making the impossible, possible. 28. 28. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 33 | What is your opinion on the necessity for businesses to align their offerings with newer technological developments? It is very important for all businesses to be aware of, and familiar with new technology of course. As the world progresses and technology drives forward, it is only prudent to, at the very least, be aware of new technology and how it is shaping the world around us. If for no other reason, at least an individual or business grows in awareness and knowledge. However, for a business to specifically align itself with newer technological developments simply because it is expected or is status quo, is not very prudent at all. It is really dependent on the business. For Ctrl V, for example, technological advancement is critical. As we aim to bring immersive technology to the masses, we expect that the definition of “immersive technology” will change going forward. And so, we must be malleable enough to grow alongside it. But we must also be prudent enough to understand that all technological advancement isn’t good, isn’t complete, or isn’t in the right direction. How are your comprehensive VR solutions helping in advancing businesses? There are so many applications for VR but, alas, similar to other technologies, virtual reality requires quite a substantial nudge from the general public to encourage adoption. And this is what Ctrl V aims to do. From a hardware standpoint, not only do we offer top of the line equipment to our customers, but we are also open to collaboration with other businesses. Connecting with the Autisms Society to provide low sensory experiences for people with autism, engaging with first responders to provide a place to train and also recover from PTSD, are amongst some of the opportunities that we provide to help advance other businesses. From a standpoint of software, with the massive throughput of customers that Ctrl V has, we have become an excellent testing ground for new businesses to trial software, engage in testing, and even pilot experiences. The team at Ctrl V does whatever we can to contribute to the great VR industry as a whole. Anything from consulting on arcade deployments, to the development of content to streamline customer integration, is something we’ve been involved in. Contributing to the VR community as well as the franchising community has always been something that the team has been passionate about. How do you envision on sustaining your company’s competency in today’s digitally disruptive world of business? Where do you see your company in the next five years? One of the things that I’m the proudest of within the Ctrl V ecosystem is our team. This goes beyond our corporate team and extends to our valuable franchise partners. Everyone treats Ctrl V as more than just a place to go to work. Everyone is an owner or thinks like an owner. They are passionate about the brand, the industry, the customers, and the business. As a result, everyone is always involved in every aspect of the industry. We are innovating together. We are learning about the industry together. We are coming up with new ideas and keeping the business disruptive together. Great people are all we need to stay competent in the digitally disruptive world of business. This naturally leads to the vision for Ctrl V for the next five years.
  29. 29. 36 | June 2021 Perspire Sauna Studio Transforming Health and Wellness with Inside-out Approach Lee Braun CEO and Co-Founder Perspire Sauna Studio
  30. 30. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 37 | Aunique blend of modern science, technology, and ancient healing practices, Perspire Sauna Studio was formed with a strong purpose to Ignite the Wellness Within™. Perspire is the premier infrared sauna franchise that combines the centuries-old practice of heat therapy with science of infrared technology and color light therapy. It offers fully customizable 40- minute infrared sauna sessions combined with built-in color light and high intensity red light therapy. With an intent to make infrared wellness accessible, Perspire is expanding rapidly, opening locations in communities and cities throughout the country. One of the inceptive minds behind Perspire Sauna Studio is its CEO, Lee Braun. Being Part of People’s Health and Wellness Journey We started back in 2010 with neither myself nor my business partner Ken Arsenian ever having owned a business much less having experience in spas and the wellness industry. I was 24 at the time and wanted to start something of my own after a few years in construction management. This was an incredible opportunity for me to get involved with considering I had wanted to be a physiology major in college because the body fascinated me, but fundamentally could not comprehend Chemistry. Relocating from Michigan to California and taking over a brand new sauna business only recently started by Ken and his prior partner may have seemed like a crazy idea at the time; but I felt up for the challenge and trust me, there were many in the beginning. The main one being - nobody had ever heard of an infrared sauna, or why they should use one. The other one being the current name at the time, Suitesweat because of the private sauna rooms. Some people thought we were a candy and bakery while others just did not understand the concept we were promoting. When we changed the name to Perspire Sauna Studio, it immediately resonated with people and helped our communities understand what we were about. Over time, we have worked to finetune our message and marketing and now with the wellness boom of the past 3-4 years, we are growing and expanding across the USA. Now more than ever, people are craving internal wellness - both mind and body. Last year when people were being bombarded with change, disease and societal unrest, they turned to Perspire for help, even when it was scary at times to leave the house. Perspire took great pride in knowing that this was many people’s safe place. The 10 Best Franchises to Open in 2021
  31. 31. 38 | June 2021 Perspire just celebrated its 11-year anniversary from their first Perspire Sauna Studio opening in Costa Mesa, CA studio in 2010. Even with the initial 4-5 years of struggling through the tough years, we were able to keep going because deep down we knew two truths about this experience; this is for everyone, and this can be everywhere. The continued compliments and positive feedback from members, citing their improved health and general well-being reaffirmed our belief in the power of the business. Looking back to the beginning when we were excited to hit our initial goals of 25 people visiting Perspire and now, we are getting ready to celebrate our 1,000,000th visitor sometime this summer. To be part of our members wellness journey inspires our team on a continual basis. Prioritizing Mental and Physical Well-being The pandemic’s effect on the world has been devastating, but if there is any silver lining it’s that more and more people are prioritizing their mental and physical well-being. There has been an incredible jump in demand for wellness services like infrared sauna use since Perspire re-opened post lock-down back in May 2020. Wellness was already a booming sector, but its growth has clearly been propelled by the pandemic. More than ever, people of different backgrounds and geographic locations are trying out different wellness services in order to feel better. Perspire is thrilled to see more people becoming conscious of their own health and wellbeing and now actively seeking to manage and improve it. Making Sense from a Franchise Standpoint Perspire has used infrared sauna and light technology as the cornerstone of its business since 2010. The business model is intentionally simple in its daily operations and has never tried to be everything to everybody. Perspire is mindful of how and when to add new services and the focus is on how these new services or new technology will fit in with the infrared sauna experience for members. With that in mind, in 2020, Perspire negotiated with their manufacturer for a more exclusive and custom infrared sauna model and made specific improvements including adding in a high intensity red light bar in the ceiling to further enhance the wellness benefits of the experience. Making IR Wellness Accessible and Scalable Perspire is very excited to be leading the way in making IR wellness accessible in communities all over the country with 16 locations now open and 10 more opening by the end of the calendar year in 8 different states. Operationally, Perspire is always keeping the health and safety of its members and teams a top priority. Our purpose is to Ignite the Wellness Within™. Through elevated infrared sauna experiences, we help every member leave feeling better than when they arrived. ‘‘ ‘‘

  34. 34. www.thefranchiseuniverse.com 41 | Changing Lives Through Franchising I f you were to ask different PropertyGuys.com franchise owners how being a franchisee has impacted their lives, there would be a deafening tone of positivity. Becoming a franchise owner is about more than owning a business, it’s about joining a community of like-minded individuals that all have similar goals in common: helping people navigate the difficult real-estate market and helping to keep their hard-earned cash in their pockets. Whether the franchise is in Canada or is one of the company’s new international locations in South Africa and Texas, franchisees rejoice at the flexibility and the collaborative effort that PropertyGuys.com offers. Kawartha Lakes, ON franchisee, Kaitlyn Smith, affirms her love for the business in explaining that at one point, she used to say, “I have to get to work,” but now cheerfully exclaims, “I want to get to work!” Smith goes on to explain that she loves the flexibility that being a franchise owner affords her when she states, “I build my business around the perimeter of my family, not my family around the edges of my business.” The heart and soul of PropertyGuys.com is the franchisee, and in turn, the work-life balance of the franchisee is of utmost importance. A happy franchisee inevitably leads to excellent customer service, and in turn, creates happy buyers and sellers. Each franchisee would agree that one of the best parts about joining the PropertyGuys.com team is that they are able to make a positive impact in their own local neighborhoods. At the end of the day, it is all about the homeowner, and franchisees take great pride in the connections that they create with each and every person that approaches them for an alternative to traditional real estate. Most franchisees end up coming from different backgrounds in the corporate world. Some are teachers, some are entrepreneurs, but Rick Davies’ training wasn’t done in dress shoes and jeans, but instead, in combat boots and fatigues. Featured in Franchise Canada magazine’s January/February 2019 Trends issue, Davies explains how his history as a veteran in the Armed Forces helped him become a successful PropertyGuys.com franchisee. Davies explains that “you have to be flexible in the military and as an entrepreneur.” While most people operate within a standard nine- to-five business day, PropertyGuys.com franchisees understand that not every homeowner is on the same schedule. The franchisee’s flexibility is not only key to their work-life balance but is also key in helping out private sellers when it’s convenient for them. This kind of work ethic is found in all franchisees. Expert's Insights
  35. 35. 42 | June 2021 For instance, Red Deer and Central Alberta franchisee, David Hicks, states that his day begins before sunrise. Starting the day in reflection, he then heads to the gym. There isn’t much time of the day not spent thinking about how to better engage people with his franchise. Hicks reflects that his days are rarely ever the same and are anything but dull. With an extensive background in gas and oil, Hicks spent a lot of his earlier years away from home. This pushed Hicks toward ownership of his own business. He enthuses that he now gets to be, “home every night [and gets to] work from home a lot.” Hicks is prideful in his accomplishments during his time as a franchisee with PropertyGuys.com, elaborating on three major aspects about what drives him to do a great job for the homeowners in his area. The first of those being that he is aware that he is offering a service that is genuinely good for people. Alberta is an incredibly competitive market, and with every private seller that Hicks and his team aide, there are thousands of dollars in commission being saved for homeowners in their communities every single day. Secondly, Hicks loves that he and his team are on the leading edge of the industry. As the world is constantly in motion, so is the real estate market, and Hicks realized incredibly quickly how the PropertyGuys.com model aligned with the market, and more importantly, homeowners’ expectations and desire to sell their properties on their own terms. Finally, the combination of his passion for photography and real estate is a bonus. When he is not listing houses, Hicks can be found shooting photos of the Alberta wildlife and scenery. As an avid hiker, he loves the flexibility that being a franchise owner offers him; especially when he gets called to do photoshoots for incredible houses. He recounts the time that he was called upon to do a listing for a house on the summit of a mountain. His office can change by the day, something an adventurer like Hicks adores. Needless to say, becoming a PropertyGuys.com franchisee is one of the most rewarding endeavours that one can experience. With the combination of having a flexible schedule and the knowledge that you are genuinely helping people save their hard-earned cash, what is there not to love? Smith, Davies, and Hicks are only a few examples of those that have happily jumped in with both feet, and with new franchises popping up monthly, the PropertyGuys.com family is only getting larger. About the Author Ken LeBlanc is a Canadian entrepreneur, franchisor, and real estate analyst born in Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1998 LeBlanc co-founded PropertyGuys.com. As President and CEO, LeBlanc has overseen the company's growth from a single Moncton location to an organization with over 120 franchises serving over 600 communities across Canada and the USA.

If one is looking for to break into this growing business niche, a franchise can be a great option to start with. Committed to Quality, Storage Authority LLC, is the only nationally recognized franchising opportu- nity for self-storage in the United States. It provides a self-storage facility, merging good old fashion services with the best technology to provide 100% satisfaction guarantee and the reassurance to its clients. The company strives to make its franchise owners’ experience as seamless and easy as possible. It has created a "turn-key" business model to provide the high end "Ritz customer service" for very happy customers to help franchise owners successfully harness the potential of owning SELF STORAGE. The Franchise Universe caught up with Marc Goodin, the CEO of Storage Authority, to shed light on the company’s franchise model, values, and its commitment to support emerging business leaders. Below are the highlights of the interview: What led to the inception of Storage Authority LLC? I was contacted by Scott House, a hotel franchise expert, who wanted one on one assistance to build his first self-storage. He had read all the books and taken several classes but understood it take more than that to build a multimillion dollar business. I had retired 15 years early and done five years of fishing and was ready to get back to work so I agreed to help him. After a couple of weeks he said self-storage would be a great franchise business for self-storage owners given all the experience it takes to develop and operate a self-storage. And soon after we co-founded Storage Authority, the only self-storage franchise in the US, things moved along swiftly and Storage Authority quickly became full time for both of us. But, since Scott did not own a self-storage he could not afford to work for free so he gave up his ownership and became a franchisee instead. His 80,000 square feet facility Storage Authority Mulberry, FL has been opened for 2 years and is for sale for $14,100,000 and he is expected to close soon for a several million dollar profit. A true success story! Give a brief overview of your background and your role at Storage Authority LLC. I am a civil engineer by trade and owned a civil engineering company in CT. I designed residential and commercial developments including many self- storages for others. After noticing the self-storage developers were the only developers not going back to work after our meetings I designed, and built 2 self-storages in 2007 & 2009 that I still own and manage. More recently I built my first international facility in Canada. The 10 Best Franchises to Open in 2021

Every member of our team shares my passion for assisting entrepreneurs accomplish their goals and dreams by selling or a buying a business. As a business leader, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the Real Estate Industry and the Mergers & Acquisitions in general? We have seen an increase in activity, but the reasons for urgency on both the buy side and sell side are different than they were pre-Covid. For example, we are seeing a few distressed industry segments i.e.: (Hospitality Industry, Convention Industry) that warrants a discounted rate. We are seeing many industry segments who have done very well though the pandemic and are wanting to sell because they cannot find enough employees to run the business. On the Buy Side there are many companies wanting to acquire another segment for their business to make their company more pandemic proof. Many individuals who work in Corporate America are afraid of getting laid off and are tired of answering to a board of directors are looking to buy a business of their own. What is your opinion on the necessity for businesses to align their offerings with newer technological developments, especially when it comes to Franchise Sales? I think business owners should always have a pulse on new technological developments for their industry segment. This can be too time consuming and expensive if you are always the Innovator and Early Adopter though and if you wait too long and are consistently the Laggards you stand the risk of being too uncompetitive and you will not be able to stay in business.
