1. Opportunities
Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to
consider the opportunities this project has to help you improve your skills, knowledge and creativity.
Opportunities
What creative opportunities can you see in this project? How could you challenge yourself
creatively in this project? You can refer to your previous experience here.
I think thinking outside the box will be a creative opportunity for me here, compared to
photography where I find it quite easy to come up with creative ideas, I think this project will
push me to find new ways to be creative. I’m already finding it quite hard to come up with
ideas, although that might just be because I’m not really focused on that right now.
This project will also hopefully help me to come up with interesting designs and techniques that
I can look back on and use in future projects.
I’m also working a lot more with words and focusing on a logo, I think this will be quite
challenging for me as like in the Recipe Cards project, I found it quite difficult to get the right
font and size to make the product look complete or the way that I wanted it, I found it quite
frustrating.
With this project, I plan to push myself to come up with unique and interesting new ideas
especially when it comes to the design of the can and the logo, I also plan to use light colours
rather than dark which is the norm in my previous projects.
What technical opportunities for development are available in this project? What technical
challenges could you set yourself? You can refer to your previous experience here.
I think this will give me the opportunity to refine and acquire new skills on Photoshop,
especially when it comes to text and font like previously mentioned and as opposed to my first
project, t-shirt design, I’d have better skills and the required knowledge to create better
designs.
It will also give me a chance to research already existing designs and effectively incorporate
some of their ideas in to my own – that also links in to creative challenges.
It will also give me the opportunity to refine my typography skills and better them so that the
logo looks fantastic and I can use the learnt skills in future projects – again referring to the
Recipe Cards project where I found typography quite a hard topic where I found it quite
frustrating, I can challenge myself to develop my skills and improve them.
How could the skills you are using and developing here be useful in a professional context?
Consider the requirements for different job roles.
If I wanted to go in to job roles such as: Graphic Designer, this gives me the opportunity to
improve my designing skills, general Graphic Design jobs look for people with the skills to design
flyers and posters, web banners (which is key in this project), experience with InDesign,
Photoshop (which is again key in this project), excellent PowerPoint skills (also key in this
project), photography skills and many more, the same goes for a web designer and a
Typographer, which requires a little more skill within the field of Typography including art
working and typesetting, advanced knowledge of Microsoft office suite, create figures and
charts and being able to work within the guidelines of the brief (which is definitely covered in
every project we do on this course.)
Basically most, if not all of the skills that are being learnt in this project will definitely, one
hundred percent help when it comes to applying for a job within the creative/media industry,
especially, it seems for graphic designers.
2. What opportunities for designing for different media does this project give you? Which final
product type interests you the most and why?
I’d say it gives a standard amount of opportunities when it comes to different media – when
looking back on research it’s only really Television/YouTube/internet and posters
advertisements that really seem to be effectively used in this project, it is a lot different to
previous tasks and it will push my usual ideas out of the box and make me come up with new
ones, which is good, but it’s not really an area that interests me when it comes to it. However I
will put all my effort in to creating a good design.
I’d say the one that caught my interest the most was the healthier energy drink option, I looked
at Schetler’s Organic Energy and I thought it was a lot more fun and interesting compared to
the others like, Monster and Red Bull which aimed at a sporty area, which I wouldn’t have been
interested or put much effort in to considering I know next to nothing about extreme sports
and Lucozade which aimed at the same sort of audience that Schetler’s did, except I wasn’t
interested in their overall look and appeal.
