(MUHAMMAD YUNUS)
-Founded Grameen Bank, a bank that provides
small loans to poor people possessing no
collateral.
-Won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006
-Got his inspiration from the terrible Bangladesh
famine of 1974.
-Felt that something was wrong
with today’s economics.
4. HISTORY & IMPACT
-Begun as a research project by putting his method for
providing credit and banking services to the rural poor
to the test.
-The village of Jobra and some other villages became the
first areas eligible for service from Grameen Bank, in
1976.
-Gradually, more areas received help from the bank.
-Today, the bank has about 2560 branches, with
approximately 20,000 staff members and serving over
8 million burrowers, in over 80,000 villages.
5. HISTORY & IMPACT
-The success of the bank greatly aided many
women. 94% of Grameen loans have gone to
women, who suffer from poverty.
-His books inspired many ordinary people to form
social ventures to help reach his aim of halving
poverty by 2015.
-The methods of Muhammad Yunus are being
used in over 50 countries, including the USA,
France and Netherlands.
