2. 2
At Jacobs, we make the world smarter, more
connected and more sustainable.
Together, we’re pushing the limits of what’s possible. We stay
ahead to create the new standards our future needs.
Challenging today is our response to the
increasing complexity our world is experiencing.
It calls on us to join forces, putting our knowledge and
imagination together to reinvent the way we solve problems
and shape the next generation of innovative solutions.
Reinventing tomorrow is our promise and an
invitation to raise the bar in everything we do.
From the brilliant solutions we create with our clients, to the
open and inclusive culture we create with our people. From the
positive difference we make in our communities, to the added
value we deliver to our shareholders.
We tackle the world’s biggest challenges
Britain needs innovators and problem
solvers who turn challenges into greater
opportunities. We have an insatiable curiosity
about transformative trends challenging
the status quo: Urbanisation. Clean growth.
Climate change. Digital proliferation. Security.
Jacobs is a unique force across the sectors
it serves, drawing on a 125-year heritage
in Glasgow and country-wide to deliver
complex, sustainable projects and
programmes focusing on critical issues.
Jacobs’ 1000-strong talent pool in Glasgow
is world class and works on a broad range of
both domestic and global projects. We are
one of the largest firms in Scotland working
on projects in a whole range of disciplines
from our Glasgow office.
We’re delivering challenging programmes
which benefit communities, cities and the
economy – programmes which are central
to building Britain’s future. Our job is to work
with our clients, partners and communities to
help make the U.K. work better and smarter.
We believe getting more integrated
infrastructure solutions is critical, if we look
at the connectivity in our cities and how
we can actually address some of the social
inequality in a number of areas in Scotland,
they’re critical. There’s a great opportunity
and necessity to provide more integrated
infrastructure solutions - including the
connectivity between rail, highways and
aviation, placemaking, and the opportunities
for more collaboration. We believe we
can help in that integration, to help take
the right decisions.
Whether we’re advising on smarter thinking
in the planning phase of major infrastructure,
thinking creatively about financing solutions
and delivery methods, or using technology
to enable smarter decisions to be taken
on investment choices. We’re helping to
pave the way for the social, environmental
and economic opportunities of national
significance.

3. Putting data central
to the mission
Britain is undergoing huge change but that change
brings new opportunities. Opportunities to realise
inclusive growth, boost productivity, inspire innovation
and develop a more well-rounded and skilled workforce.
The way people work and live is changing. What energy
they need, what services they need. How transport
works. All of this is evolving.
These issues inspire us to dig deeper and apply big data
analytics. We see data as the new bricks and mortar.
There’s no point in leaping into creating something until
we truly understand how people are living their lives
now – and what we can do to improve their lives in the
future. That means putting data central to the mission
to effectively meet the most crucial demands of our
population. Data-enabled intelligence is revealing better
ways we can help clients devise and deliver cities and
communities fit for the future. Smart and connected
places that function more effectively, are more resilient
and sustainable, and are more responsive to the needs
of the people using them.
Preparing for
a resilient future
It’s time to think differently about the future — about
how we prepare for and respond to natural, societal
and economic risks. We think beyond one-dimensional
solutions to help improve social, environmental and
economic resiliency. We are providing infrastructure,
technology and intelligence solutions to help
communities prepare, adapt, mitigate and recover when
facing climate, cybersecurity, biosecurity-related or
other risks.
We’re supporting the Environment Agency’s efforts
to protect the property and livelihoods of 1.3 million
people along the Thames Estuary system in England; it’s
the world’s largest resiliency programme.
Zero Waste Scotland
Zero Waste Scotland supports delivery of the Scottish
Government’s circular economy strategy to retain
products and materials in high-value use and make the
most of resources, maximising economic benefit for
Scotland and reducing environmental impact. Jacobs’
circular economy expertise is helping Zero Waste
Scotland develop more circular approaches to benefit
business and the environment.
Shieldhall Tunnel, Glasgow
When a month’s worth of rain fell over Glasgow on
a June afternoon in 2002, the city’s sewer system
just couldn’t keep up, leaving portions of the city
under several feet of water. Completed in 2018, the
Shieldhall Tunnel – supported by Jacobs – is the biggest
wastewater tunnel in Scotland, and a main component
of Scottish Water’s programme to transform how it
manages rainfall, protects water quality and prevents
flooding from stormwater overflows.
Challenging today. Reinventing tomorrow.

4. Connecting cities and
communities
Whether its improving mobility and connectivity to bring
people, their skills and businesses closer together, or
safeguarding the environment, we are helping to devise,
design and deliver solutions for cities and communities
of the future. To make them work better and smarter,
so they are cleaner, safer and happier places to live
and work in.
Look at the most complex and transformational projects
in Britain today. From the Queensferry Crossing over
the Firth of Forth, Blackfriars Station in London to the
Manchester Airport Transformation Programme – we’re
helping to create transport systems that are smarter and
more resilient and enhance commuter experience.
Queensferry Crossing
Collaborating with Transport Scotland, we helped
deliver the Forth Replacement Crossing – the biggest
infrastructure project in Scotland for a generation. At
its heart is the new Queensferry Crossing, the world’s
longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge, and 13.7
miles of major roadway upgrades for the corridor.
Deploying innovative technologies and making best use
of the existing bridge and infrastructure, the scheme
was designed to dramatically improve the reliability of
cross-Forth travel – improving traffic flow, traffic safety,
air quality and accessibility in the region.
Edinburgh City Centre Transformation
Jacobs is helping the City of Edinburgh Council to plan
the transformation of Edinburgh City Centre to improve
community, economic and cultural life for the benefit
of generations to come. The programme is exploring
strategies to make the city more accessible for residents,
visitors and business, creating better connectivity with
sustainable, smart and cleaner transport, enhancing
civic centres and improving air quality.
“At Jacobs, we believe in always striving to do
the right thing for our clients, working together
to tackle the toughest challenges, and always
believing there could be a better way.”

Thriving communities.
Healthy cities. A brighter future.
What we do is more than a job, we work every day to make the world better for all.
We live and play in the communities where we work
— so we’re personally invested in doing what is right
for people in the places and communities we’re
connected with. We provide infrastructure, technology
and intelligence solutions to help communities build
resiliency today for a better tomorrow.
We strive to make a positive impact on our local
communities. Recently Jacobs employees participated
in the World’s Big Sleep Out 2019 to raise money for
and awareness of homelessness. To help address this
global issue, more than 100 Jacobs employees from
cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Cardiff,
Manchester, Leeds and Dublin, participated in the
World’s Big Sleep Out 2019.
Inspiring Future Talent
Our STEM Ambassador Network, which includes many
of our graduates and apprentices, works with schools
across the U.K. to promote STEM subjects through
lots of initiatives. From engineering awareness days
to an ‘Industrial Cadets’ accredited work experience
programme with local schools, we are helping
young people to become more engaged in STEM
opportunities and develop the skills they need to
grow with confidence.
The U.K. has been a home market to Jacobs for more
years than anywhere else we operate. For us, our social
impact is not an add on, it is built into everything we
do. We always think about our legacy, ensuring we
leave behind more than we create in the communities
we work in. Demonstrating social value and impact,
alongside economic and environmental impact has
become critical in every sector we serve.
Helping to maximise better policy and investment
decisions for clients, Jacobs has acquired a 50% share in
Simetrica, a U.K.-based organisation that specialises in
social value measurement and wellbeing analysis. Under
the new partnership, Simetrica will provide its cutting-
edge expertise to increase existing capabilities and
offerings in the areas of socio-economics, sustainability
and environmental services.
In response to increasing client demand driven by
the Public Services (Social Value) Act in the U.K.,
the Organization for Economic Co-operation and
Development’s (OECD) Inclusive Growth Initiative
and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs), Jacobs and Simetrica are developing new best
practices and solutions related to social value and
wellbeing principles.
Using Simetrica’s methods, techniques and tools,
investment decisions in both the public and private
sectors can be re-imagined and assessed in more
comprehensive and rigorous ways to maximise the value
that they generate for communities and society.
Simetrica is the global leader in the field of social value
measurement, business ethics and the application of
wellbeing and quality of life analysis to policy and
project assessment.
