INGRAM’S 37 IS NOT ENOUGH FOR EAGLES TO
“SHOCK” WICHITA STATE
By Thomas C. Tripp, Sports Writer for The Carolinian
WICHITA, KS—Jeremy Ingram may have scored a game-high 37 points, but it wasn’t
enough for the Eagles of North Carolina Central University to emerge victorious. NCCU lost a
77-66 decision to eleventh-ranked Wichita State Shockers, on Sunday, December 22, 2013. The
Shockers were led by Clemenson Early, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, as well as 15 points
from Rod Blaker and 14 from Fred VanVleet. Wichita State went to the Final Four last season,
losing to Louisville, in the National Semi-final game.
For North Carolina Central, they were outrebounded 37-22, especially by a 15-3
offensive margin. Ingram, one of the nation’s leading scorers, was 12-21 from the floor and 7-13
from the three-point line. He scored 27 of his 37 points in the second half. The Eagles opened
the second half with six straight points to alleviate Wichita State’s lead to 40-30. Two free
throws from Carter gave Wichita State its first points of the half and put them up by 12, with the
score being 42-30 with 18:29 left in the game. After NCCU cut the Shocker lead to 10, Ron
Baker answered for the Shockers with a three-pointer from the corner that extended the Wichita
State lead to 54-41 at the 9:46 mark.
VanVleet’s three-point play gave Wichita State a 60-46 boost late in the second half, but
the Eagles would trim the lead to eight, 61-53, in favor of the Shockers. Thanks to a three-
pointer by Early and a steal by Baker, who made the pass to VanVleet on the fast break for a
layup, gave the Shockers an advantage of the score being 66-53 in the first half, which caused
the Eagles to call a timeout with 4:54 remaining. With Baker hitting another three and Early

adding a dunk off of a steal, it sealed the victory for Wichita State. The loss to Wichita State
drops the Eagles 0-5 all-time against members of the Missouri Valley Conference – the
conference where Wichita State is in.
The next game for the Eagles is against the Maryland Terrapins on New Year’s Eve, at
2PM, at the Comcast Center on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park. It can
be heard on WNCU 90.7 FM – The flagship station for NCCU Athletics. Their next home game
is on Tuesday, January 7, against the Hampton Pirates for their first MEAC contest of the season.
