The document discusses various visual styles including psychedelic art, Shpongle album art, impressionism, minimalism, and art deco. It provides examples of each style and how they are used in album covers. Psychedelic art uses bright colors and hallucinogenic imagery to immerse audiences. Shpongle adopted this style for their album covers. Impressionism uses simple imagery to create emotional atmospheres. Minimalism creates meaning through simplicity, as seen in Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon cover. Art deco emphasizes glamour through colors of gold and silver, seen in Linkin Park's cover art.
2. PSYCHEDELIC ART
• Psychedelic art is based primarily upon hallucinogenic
drugs and the visuals these substances emulate. This
era of art peaked in the 1960's under the psychedelic
movement as a use for self-development. Artists such
as Rick Griffon, Wes Wilson and Victor Moscoso can be
seen as responsible for launching this movement.
• This innovative and creative art is influenced by
psychoactive drugs such as Magic Mushrooms, LSD,
Ayahuasca and DMT. All these substances allow artists
to explore dimensions of art that can't be entered
within the ordinary psyche.
• This art is used by many musicians and artists in their
work today, for example Shpongle.
3. SHPONGLE CD ART
• Shpongle adopted this psychedelic element into their music
and their CD art. The font adopts this technique also, it gives
the album cover this illusive and captivating style. This style
uses very vibrant and bright colours to stand out and
connote vibrant emotions. The CD art also uses psychedelic
and hallucinogenic imagery to immerse and confuse their
consumers. The imagery and font perfectly emulate the
tracks that are on the album; this style is hugely effective at
impacting the audience. It causes the consumer to be taking
a back and shocked, this is largely due to the cluttered
approach of the cover. In contrast to styles such as
minimalism, psychedelic art inhabits various imagery and
colours to overwhelm the consumer.
• This style has various elements that I could adopt within my
work, for example the bright and vibrant colours that
connote and conjure up many emotions within the
consumer. This style also captivates and immerses the
audience substantially compared to other styles, which I feel
is important in gathering a large consumer market.
4. IMPRESSIONISM
19th Century art movement, conventionally simple and ordinary
settings and subject matter. Often including movement as a crucial
element of human perception. Impressionism originated with a group
of Paris based artists. These artists faced harsh opposition from the
conventional art community in France. Artists such as Claude Monet
and Edgar Degas dominated the movement. This art often conveying
emotions of love and sadness, as they can create a solemn and soft
atmosphere. Impressionism is definitely something I would consider
using for my album art as it uses simple imagery to create an
immersive and emotional atmosphere. Furthermore, this album art
would perfectly coincide with my genre of music, Indie, as it has
emotional connotations.
5. IMPRESSIONISM CD
ART
• This impressionist CD art is
captivating as the array of
colours connote various emotions
and give the album cover a
immersive look. This art would be
perfect for my chosen song as I
feel the art needs to be simple yet
powerful.
6. MINIMALISM
• In art and music, minimalism is an art movement that
began in post-World War II. Primarily western art,
most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s
and early 1970s. Prominent artists associated include
Donald Judd, John McCracken and Agnes Martin.
Deriving from reductive aspects of modernism and is
often interpreted as a reaction against abstract
expressionism and a bridge to post minimal art
practices. Minimalism is used within art too create
simple but attractive pieces; connoting simplicity with
an underlying message of deeper meaning or
metaphor.
7. MINIMALISM – PINK FLOYD
• Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon',
album cover, is a perfect example of the
use of minimalism within art for album
covers. Through a contrast of black, white
and a rainbow spectrum, this piece
connotes innovation and creativity out of
simplicity. Shown through the black and
white evolution into colour. A simple
design such as this proves powerful and
captivating; the contrasting colours add
depth to the piece. This style of
minimalism is definitely an element I
would like to incorporate into my piece
as it is simple on the eye but complex to
the interpretation of the mind.
8. ART DECO
• Art Deco, first appearing before the First World
War, Art Deco influenced the design of
building, furniture and fashion. Key artists
within Art Deco include Erte, Louis Icart and
Tamara de Lempicka. The style of Art Deco was
subdued in 1930's during the Great Depression.
The distinguishing features of the style are
simple, clean shapes, often with a “streamlined”
look to them. Often using colours such as Gold,
Silver and Obsidian to generate a sophisticated
and expensive look. This style, whilst being
effective in some lights, would be more suited
to the album cover of a pop band, emphasizing
glamour and money.
9. ART DECO – LINKIN
PARK
• Linkin Park's album art incorporates a
warm array of colours, to formulate a
contrasting atmosphere, against the cool
colours of the symbol, and series of
connotations. The use of lines within this
art genre is a typical convention, which is
accurately displayed here in Linkin Park's
piece. The lighter coloured lines represent
light beams coming from the city seen at
the bottom of the picture.
