Spring Break College Tour
This year 35 students and 5 chaperones toured colleges and universities along the east coast.
Let’s hear from the students what they had to say about their experience:
√ It’s a great opportunity to be with like-minded students.
√ Summer workshops to help you complete a quality college
application.
√ An internship fair where you can receive an offer for an
internship for the following summer.
If you have a 3.4 or higher GPA or are a member of Phi Theta
Kappa, apply to become a Chicago Scholar today!
Chicago Scholars helps students with the application and
acceptance process for top colleges and universities across
the country. This year we had 20 CCC students participate in
an onsite admission event, of which all students were accept-
ed to a college/university!!! The group has received over
$70,000 in scholarships to help fund their education.

Transfer Success Story—Tina Watson
5 Key Steps to Becoming a Transfer Success Story
The transfer process can be intimidating and students sometimes wait until their final
semester at community college to begin planning. A successful transfer student will take
these five steps and put them into action, starting in their first year at CCC. Apply the
steps below and you can be the next transfer success story on your campus!
1. Plan Ahead— As businessman American Laiken once said, “Planning is bringing
the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” This quote
can be well applied to the transfer process. Planning ahead for transfer can ensure
you take the best classes to help you transition and helps you to stay mindful of op-
portunities that can help lead to your success. Meet with your College Advisor or
Transfer Director to help you create an education plan and learn about the transfer
partnerships that can benefit you as you transfer to a 4-yr. institution.
2. Do Your Research— Research colleges and universities and take the time to visit
college campuses. The college visit has become the largest deciding factor for a
students attendance at a college/university as well as their satisfaction with the insti-
tution. Students who know as much as possible about the institutions they are seek-
ing to transfer are able to make a better decision about which institution is the best
fit for their needs. The CCC Transfer and Articulation web pages have many re-
sources that you can use to help you succeed.
3. Get Involved—Getting involved on campus or in your community makes you a
stronger applicant to many colleges and universities. It’s not just about the GPA
(though that is still an important factor). You can also get involved with transfer part-
nership opportunities. These partnerships can offer things such as summer intern-
ships, guaranteed admission, mentoring, scholarships and so much more. These
partnerships often have deadlines and earned credit/GPA criteria, so you will want
to be aware of what they need so that you don’t miss out on the perfect opportunity
for your transfer success.
4. Consider Your Credits— A successful transfer student knows exactly how their
credits will transfer to the colleges/universities they are considering. Use resources
such as transfer guides that you can find on the college website or Transferology
an online resource that helps you determine the transferability of your courses. Bring
these tools with you when you meet with your College Advisor so that you can cre-
ate an education plan that meets your needs and sets you up for a successful transi-
tion.
5. Ask for Help— “Don’t be shy about asking for help. It doesn’t mean you’re weak, it
only means you’re wise.” This quote by an anonymous author says it all.
There are many resources at your CCC college as well as at the 4-yr. institution to
help you achieve your success. Using the resources that are available to you will
only help you to excel academically and socially—both strong foundations for a suc-
cessful future. Visit your Transfer Director today to get the help that you need to suc-
cessfully transition to your dream school!
Tina Watson took a chance on a college tour orga-
nized by City Colleges in 2014. She thought it would
be a great experience to visit HBCU’s. When she left
for the tour, she never imagined all that would result
from her experience and she definitely did not imag-
ine that it would result in a complete shake up of her
academic plans. You see, before leaving for the
tour, Tina was confident that she would stay in Chi-
cago to attend college/university in the city. After the
tour—after having the opportunity to experience
campuses first hand—she decided that Fisk Univer-
sity was a perfect fit for her. When she returned to
Chicago, she completed her application to Fisk and
completed a few scholarships. Well, Tina Watson,
Student Ambassador at Kennedy King College, is
the newest transfer success story! She was not only
accepted to Fisk University, but Tina was also
awarded the Presidential Scholarship at the institu-
tion, a scholarship that pays full tuition and books.
After meeting with a few of the campus administra-
tors and hearing her wonderful story, Tina was of-
fered yet another scholarship. This time it also co-
vers her food and boarding expenses. Tina is a good
student. She knew she would be able to at least re-
ceive PTK scholarships and a few academic schol-
arships to cover the costs of her education while
living in Chicago. She never imagined that going on
a college tour would result in an all expenses paid
opportunity to complete her bachelor’s degree. Con-
gratulations to Tina and all of the faculty and staff at
KKC who have supported her during her time at
CCC!
“The tour itself was a great
unique experience. It was
lovely to meet new people
and visit our country capital.””
“The highlights were
being able to get a feel of
each campus environ-
ment while school was in
session. I appreciated the
honesty that was given
from students when
asked questions about
their college. Norfolk and
Howard definitely stole
my heart.”
